"Wireless Club Reports Hobart Experimenters' Club
The Hobart Radio Experimenters' Club is a strong body of
wireless enthusiasts, captained by Mr Geo. Collis, well-known
in Australian wireless circles. Perhaps the most noteworthy
member of the club is Mr T. Watkins, owner-operator of that
remarkable amateur transmitting station 7AA. The secretary
is Mr D. Chesterman, himself the proud possessor of an eight-
valve installation of his own construction. The club was
once known as the Wireless Institute, but a split occurred
(in the course of which some blood was spilt and a black eye
told its tale), and the new body was formed with the donor of
the black eye as president. The Wireless Institute is still
in existence, but in a rather negative state at present.
There was recently a movement on foot on the part of local
experimenters to close down the Hobart broadcasting station
7ZL, on account of its interference with "important
		 experiments.
		 Launceston Experimenters' Club
The Launceston Radio Experimenters' Club made a name for
itself last Saturday when the Henley-on-Tamar regatta was
carried out by means of wireless. A speed boat was fitted
with an efficient wireless telephony apparatus which conveyed
the results of races etc., to a giant loud speaker stationed
		 on the regatta ground. . . ."

		 3BQ says - 7AA, Mr.Watkins, of Hobart, who, with 3JU,
was the first amateur to establish communication between
Victoria and the smaller Island State. That seems ages ago,
but must have been near the end of 1922, when amateur "stone-
		 crushers" were still heard.

11/7/25 The New 3AR - Mr Donald MacDonald was the assistant of
