The LM396 10 Amp Adjustable Regulator
This regulator can be used as the basis for a 1.25v to 15v adjustable power supply, or as a 13.8v fixed
power supply. I have used this regulator on a number of occasions in the past for a quick and easy power
supply.
The LM396 only requires a minimum component count to produce a robust power supply. When
mounted on a suitable heatsink, the regulator is can handle up to 10 amps, providing the 70W maximum
power dissipation is not exceeded. The regulator includes both thermal and current limiting. This makes
the LM396 immune to blowout from output overloads or shorts, even ifthe adjustment pin is accidentally
disconnected.
For a fixed supply, Vin should be bewteen 3v and 7v greater than the required Vout. For the variable
supply, do not exceed 20v difference between Vout and Vin. Figure 1 shows a typical application for a
basic 1.25v to 15v regulator. Figure 2 shows the connection details for the LM396K (TO-3 package).
