EDITORIAL
At the last Northern Branch meeting there were discussions
regarding members joining the State Emergency Service. While
I
i
in no way do I wish to "knock" the S.24.5. we should think
seriously about the future of WICEN in this state and whether
| or not it would be better to properly organize WICZN and
II offer its services to S.3.5S. as a goiing concern. The W.I.A.
Tas. Division now has a liason officer with 3.3.5. i.c.
Brian Morgan VKT7RR, so I would ask all members to seriously
consider the best course of action and make the dsacision which
is in the best interests of the Wel.A.y, W I C & N und S.J3.5.
After all we have the equipement, the ability to service it
and the capabilities to operate it and a state wide net which
should take very little organisation.
NORTHERN BRANCH NOT.ES:3
The last meeting of the Northern Branch was held in
the State Emergency Service Rooms in Charles Street. These
rooms were certainly wore spacious and suitable than the ClVll
Defence Rooms., (In my oplnlon.) There are a few minor problem
with these rooms e.g. is there enough chairs? You have to
bring your cup for supper. Since the Civil Defence no longer
exists there could be some doubt about clubrooms, so if you
have not seen the S.5.5. rooms, I would suggest you come 0
the next meeting and find out for yourself whether or not they
arc suitable and be prepared to make a decision as to where
we are going to mect. There is plenty of car parking
available in the car park in Paterson Strect just opposite
Repco. On the last mecting some equipement was shown by
Col VK7KW - a fantastic 1.5-30 mhz tranceiver that does
everything but the talklng and Mike VK7KW showed us his
latest equipement, that is a 6 wuwetre S.5.B. had held
transceiver.and also a 2 metre S.3.B¢ had held transceiver.
It is a pity that more people did not show an interest in
them. The next mecting will include an Auction of Roge
Greenwoods Amateur equipement and also any gcegr other amateurs
bring along. S0 sce you thecre.

VHF Notes By Joe VK7ZGJd
Two metres has been the most active VHFband for the
past month; with numerous openings to VI3,
LDarly ir the wmonth the VE3VF beacon was audible for
about two weeks alcong with CH4&1 coming through. liajor
openings took place on 3rd & 4th were over two dozen
stations were worked. One station VE3zDii Neville was
only running 5W while others were using IC202°'s bare foot.
On the 17th stations worked included 5ZCH near 1lit. Gambia
and again on the 28th. David VK32HY was worked on 6&2m.
during the day, then in the evening Kevin worked numerous
VE3's.
Two six metre >Spenings were recorded during the
month. On the 10th Bob VK5FB was worked the opening
lastirng about an hour. Then again on the 16th. The band
was open for most of the evening to VK5. On the 29th
ZLTV was watchable in colour for over 30 minutes
although nothing was heard of their beacon.
During the equinox is an ideal time to keep a close
ear to the band as you may work the northern hemisphere,
don't forget the beacons around 50-50.11THZ at the same
time 27IMHZ is an early warning of a possible opening

Commonwealth CV Contest 1976. (the olc BERU )
1200z 13th March, to 1200z 14th larch.
Asfou already know, this contest is between stations in the
British Commonwealth areas, (III) in all. G.GW.GlIT ect® being
grouped as oOne.
VE stations have monopolised the top placings in recent
years— 7 in the first 10 in 1975-. as they have the numbers
across the coun’ry, and at times, when intercontinental m
propagation is not suitable they are very busy contacting
each other, while we in VK are struggling to contact the com
paratively few VK and ZL stations that are active in this
contest.
Our hope is for more VK activity, not only in the
periods when G, VE, West Indies and African stations are
being contacted but in the "off" periods when VK stations
can work only ZL on 3.5 2I and 28 lMhz (other contest bands
are 7 and I4 Mhz.)e.
VK entries in 1974 numbered 7. In 1975 entries rose to 26
let us ‘try for 50 in 1976.
Conditions during February have again been erratic on
the three higher bands, with good openings on most evenings
after sunset on I4 lMhz. signals being usually weak but
appearing from most quarters. 2I and 28 Mhz have only been
tuned over at the weekends but 2I seems to come in and out
strongly at times, if you stay with it some good DZ can be
worked. The three lower bands have been producing good DX
if you dig down below the third layer of VK and ZL activity
those stations who can work split freyuency can have a ball
on 3.5 and 1.8 after sunset, thosc fixed transceivers can
however be put to very good use down in the CW portions.
7LZ and I would like to hear of anyone who hcard the
PYO. CEO, or theVP8, during February.
VR8B was workcd fron Figi zs 3D2KG, he will probably be
on from Narue by now, I don't know where Lloyd is going to
after Narua, but QSL cards for him are handled by Yasme.
LASZQ Jan requires one more VK7 for his WiVK award so
look for him most days around 1030Z on approx 14.140.
G3ZPU/VK3 Jim, is working for Joe's. firm in VIM, He willl
be getiing on I44 son.
"Trevor has been working on a QRP linear using 25KV rated
caps,Hi. :
Max 7CA is thinking of putting some All signals on the
HF bands, after listening to some of the mal adjusted specch
compressors used by some stations a return of some AM would
be worth listening to Psst, anyonc got a UNM3 transformer .

9ix metres is open, and it's started again,
Malcolm raccd for the study yelling "where is that pen',
The buzzing, the crackling, the twidaling of knobs,
I sighed and lamcented - Oh well, there go thic jobs!
41's coming in, he shouted in glecg,
ind a P26 - I can't believe it - yippee!l
The cat stirs a little, the children all scatter,
The hours pass, and night falls and still he does natter,
Sparc cheir in the corner as we all enjoy tea,

It's ready 1've called out - many times. -~ Oh dear mcl
The ear phones are on, concentrations fhe word,
But I learn at long last - he just hasn't heard.
I repeat he's a dear, and 1 love hime of course,

For better or wecrse 1 married that man,
But my advice to young girls is - NEVER LRRY o h“n.

These are the dimensions of the full size G5 RV aeriale.
For half size version, the dimensions of the flat-top and
matching stub are scaled proportionatelye.
The matching stub should prefferably be of open wire
feeder because of lower losses, especially at 21 and 28 mhz
and its length should be 34'; but if 300 ohm ribbon is used
allowance must be made for the velocity factor of this type
of twin lead. Since this is approxiamately ¢.88 the actual
physical length of the 300 ohm ribbon stub should be 29'6'°*.
This matching stub is intended to resonate as a half wave
impedance transformer at 14 mhz.
The 102 feet long flat top may have 10' of each end
dropped vertically (or semi-vertically) to save space thus
reducing the length to 82 feet.
To avoid unwanted radiation from the coax feeder if
used, a wide range balun should be inserted at the end of the
matching stub.
Incidentally the "Man himself G$RV" suggests the aerial
will work or 3.5 mhz at a VSWR of 10 to 1 but this figure
may be reduced to 5 to 1 on 3.5 mhz by "pruning® the co-ax,.
He also adds"Contary to general belief a U.S.W.R. of up to
5 to 1 on a length of co=ax up to about 100* at the frequencies
considered here, results in negligible loss of power,
