EDITORIAL -~ By Brian Yeoman VK7ZBY
This year, QRM has yet another Editor, an Editor with certain ideas
of what QRM should be to the members of the VK7 Division.
In my view, QRM should be the medium by which all branches and Council
can publicize their activities., Divisional braodcasts are 0K, but not every-
one can or wants to listen to them. QRM however is the only reliable link
of communication that can effectively reach all members and after all, that's
the name of our game. Remember, members cannot support branches and Council
if they are not kept informed. 4
-.‘
It is my desire that QRM be the vehicle by which all aspects of a;ateur
radio in Tasmania can be represented. For example, HF DX, Novice, VHF, SWL
notes and any other section that you, the members feel has a place in this
hobby of ours, as well of course, the usual technical articles which must
come from you the members. With these points in mind T see no reason why QRM
cannot become an even better magazine.
Finally, I cannot end this editorial without thanking Ken VK7ZKT for
the find work that he and his helpers put into the production of GQRM last
year, Many thanks Ken.,
73 Brian
Editor.

CLUBROOM
We are about half way through our first five year lease and as all
members should know we have utilised the building for monthly business and
eyeball night, as well as QRM wrapping sessions. At all of these there were
obvious absentees, in other words more members have been and persist in
taking not giving. There are a few exceptions of course who have very good
reasons for not attending, these we understand. I must also say there have
been some outstanding stalwaits who have attended and given,as they say, time
and effort beyond the call of their particular sphere, to those people on
the members behalf our thanks. In the future (early) I would like to see
the outside shedmmade more secure and put to better use.

HISTORICAL
I am both satisfied and disappointed with the way this venture has
turned out. Satisfied, because with my memory being assisted by VK7's
CH, Lz, HE, the late CW and others providing old time photographs I have
been able to compile a list of almost all amateurs from about 1920 in
Tasmania.
I am disappointed in the small number of amateurs of later years
for only a few have helped. So what about twisting your mates arm and
your own and provide this section of VK7's history with the material it
needs - please,

Applications for membership were received from the followings
Malcolm Sargeant Burnie - Associate Duly elected
Keith Reardon Penguin - (awaiting
call) " "
Frank Young North Motton " e
It is interesting to note that Frank VK7FH, is making a "comeback" to
Amateur Radio after an absense of many years - way back in the AM days.
He recently paid a visit to the "shack™ of a NOVICE (who shall remain name-
less HI) to get the low down on the type of rig to buy, modern Antennae
systems and so on. The novice "fired-up" the closest rig to hand and had
a 950. At the end of the ¢SO, Frank's remarks were a classic. He said
"My God, I'll have to learn a new language". We have come a long way
Since the old "spark" days.
MINI HAM~FEST
Will be held at Port Sorell on Sunday 2% March., King Canute has
advised that the tide will be CK,
THE CHAIRMAN advised that 2 A.C.C.P. classes are currently being held, one
at the Burnie Tech, and the other at the Penguin High School. These classes

the Novice exam.
CORRESPONDENCE
Read by Tony VKT7AX: A copy of the meeting held at Dodges Ferry. A
letter was sent to Don VKT7NDH, wishing him luck in VK4,
CORRECTION
It was incorrectly reported last month, that Graham VK744 was building
the ATV iepeater. This should have read "Graham is building the 2M Beacon".
we apologise to those concerned for our error.
CROSS BAND QSO FM/SSB
I+ is noteworthy to report that, on 27/2/80, Greg VK72ZZ, operating on
146,475mhz had a cross band %80 with Jack, VK3NOG, who was operating on
3,6mhz, The time was T.41 pem. local.
AUCTION
At the close of business, an auction of some very useful components was
held. The auctioneer was Steve VK7Z Silver Mike. Judging by some of the
prices Steve got for some of the items, your scribe made a mmntal note
that, if ever the computer business "goes bad", Steve would have ne trouble
in obtaining & job as an auctioneer.
IN CONCLUSION
A very brief note of the A.G.M. held in Hobart on 15 March.
Some 36 members attended. Peter VKTPF resigned as Treasurer for the
Division after 20 years of excellent service.
IVAN VKTZOA/NOA was elected as Council Representative for the !N.W. Branch
for the ensuring year.
JIM VKTNOW, was elected Historical Officer for the Division.
MAX VKTMX is to be presented with a merit award for outstanding service
to Amateur Radio in Tasmania, extending over many years.
MEMBERS agreed that the Sunday morning broadcast should originate on 2M,
thus providing the relay stations with a strong, high quality, interference
free signal which could be put out on any frequency. Your scribe was seen
to bow ever so slightly at the waist.
If members have the pleasure of working VKTNBA, and note the educated
and excellent voice behind the Mic, it is none other than Barry, a well
known TV ABC Newsreader.
The Southern Branch is to be commended for its hospitality and the
excellent dinner which was provided.
This then, wraps it up for another month.

SOUTHERN BRANCH NOTES.
The library will again be brought to the next branch meeting
on the Wednesday, the 2nd. of April, as it appears that the books
had been donated to the Southern Branch by the State Council. The
proposal is to sell off the magazines, either singly or in bundles.
As regards the rest of the books, they will go one of three ways.
Some books will be donated to the State library for reference
purposes; some of them - the really old ones, will go to our new
historian - look out Jim; and the rest - hopefully only the data
books, will go to the store. So here is the last chance to get
that old A.R., or QST etc. , that you missed out on 15 years ago.
The suggested amount of the money - clubhouse funds and
equipment account, that has been sitting idle has been placed in
Commonwealth bonds, and is now earning a good rate of interest.
While talking about money, the Annual dinner held last Saturday
night realised a profit of fifty dollars, due to good last minute
support and an overestimation of the likely cost increase over
the last six months - when arrangements were made. It is worth
noting that 3years ago the cost was 7.50 per head, and last years
dinner was run at a considerable loss.
Next event on the social calender is a BYO everything - so there
is no charge - barbeque to be held at Mt. Field National Park on
Sunday, the 20th. of April. This is another WAGS function, so you
can be sure of having a good time.
The next executive meeting will be held on the third Wednesday
in April - ie the 16th. at the QTH of the Secretary, Helene VK7HD,
unless she has sold her house first! The next WAGS meeting will
be held at the Barbeque at Mt. Field,- all interested persons are
invited. The final meeting notice concerns the AAC, which will be
meeting on Sat., the 19th. of April, at the usual location.
There will probably also be a film at the next SB meeting - title
as yet unknown. A suggestion has been made thet we branch out a bit
with the films, and have some of general interest and not
specifically radio; - possibly these evenings could become more
of a social event with families attending. What do members think!?

Build A Deluxe QRP Transmatch
- - make every milliwatt count
QRP operation has many advantages. High voltage components are
unnecessary, bringing the cost of components down to a reasonable range.
Fig 1 shows a complete schematic of the circuit. The tuner can be switche
in or out of the circuit. At position 1% of the switch, the transmitter is
connected to a 50 ohm dummy load. This can be left out if not needed.
If used,it should be capable of handling your transmitters power.
In the tuner L1 could be a roller inductor, but that would push up the
cost of the circuit. The tuner works well on 80 thru to 10 Meters.,
For compactness, use miniature 365 pF variables. C1-C2 could be a gang
tuned capacitor, but that would cost more and tske up more room,
suitable connectors shoula be used, to prevent unwanted radiatior.

VHF Notes by Joe VK7JG
Once again very Little to report for the past month. If you
have any news of interest please pass it onto me before the 15 th
of the month for inclusion in QRM.
The sun spot peak has passed but we should still experience good
propogation across the equator for the next couple of years, when
conditions are in our favour. Steve Gregory Vk30T has proved
that if you are in the right location (Christmas Island) at the
right time you can almost work the world.
In Tasmania we do not experience the good conditions of our
northern states however we do experience some openings bui very
fiew of late.
On 2/3/80 around 0900z I observed ChO tv on tuning Six metres
the KH6EQI beacon was S5 no other signals were heard on the 50
Mhz end of the band, I then tuned 52 llhz section and heard
KH6NS working VK2 and B amateurs. Patiently I waited for a bresk
in transmissions and gave a call he came straight back with a
5/6 report at the crucial moment the linear failed and he continued
to call me. Once I realised what was wrong 1 went back barefoot
and received a 5/3 report.
Following this the KH6EQI beacon was heard at II1I5z on 5/3/80
again on 6/3/80 at I1II45Z no contacts were made on these occasions
although the beacon was audible for some considerable time.
Once again we experienced several good inversions and a large
number of contacts were made via the repeaters in VK3 and VK7
Activity on SSB is very LOW in the Launceston area with only
one or two active amateurs on this band.

Two motions were discussed. The firet sought to remove the mention of
novice licencees in requirements for the election of Council members. This
was passed with one amendment, the effect of which was to make the change
apply to the next Council election. This avoided making the present
election void.
An amendment to allow Associate Members voting rights at Branch meetings
was left pending legal advice as to further ramification of such a change.
Federal Convention
Amateur Radio and Sunday broadcasts will be carrying details of Convention
items to be discussed at the Convention on April 25,26 and 27. Federal

NOVICE NOTES - By Noughts & Crosses
In putting pen to paper for the first time it is with trepidation and
humility. I hope in the future months to build this column into something
that can be useful for the novice amateur that being somewhere between
the chicken band and the world of the experts.
Firstly it is not my intention to give advice on the state of the band,
probagation or how to get that exclusive contact that you think is there,
but can't make it.
what I would like to do is to be a contact through QRM and the Airways
if there is a problem any novice may have, if he wants anything hard to
get, has any query relative to his/her hobby that the institute may be
abole to assist with or if anyone has any idea what he wants out of the
Northern Branch. Don't forget to speak out.
As you are aware there is a club for Amateurs, all types plus a cludb
room and equipment to use anda station VK7NB. Do you want to use it?
Do you want a novice night? A chance to see how VHF or RTTY or Oscar
works. Do you want to work the bands that at the moment you cannot use
but can do under supervision? Lets hear from you, it only needs a contact
made with me and you never know you may be surprised at the result.
Let me remind you all of the Sunday morning broadcast at 0930 E.A.S.T.
from the v.I.A., followed by the call back on 3570khz and if you have a
2 meter receiver Brian VK7ZBY will be happy to cross band contact with
you on 28.550 mhz after the repeater 8 call back.
If anyone is project happy and wants a A.T.U., for end feed probagation
come along to our next meeting when Joe VK7JG will =»ive a talk on an
ingenious A.T.U. It works I can tell you as I have one.,
The Institute in the North is anxious to attract the novice and
particularly to try and help him upgrade to a full call. A A.C.C.P. course
is being set up by Brian VK7ZBY and will commence in June. If anyone
has any queries either contact me or Brian.
On air on the 15 June VK9OT on Christmas Island was heard on 21,202mhz
at 5.29 E.A.S.T. with the greatest pile up I have ever heard, calling JA's
one by one with their last letter of their call sign as a reference point,
Well to novice amateurs this column is a challenge. This is the first
and by no means the last, lets hear from you and give me your problems,
your comments and your brickbats or bouguets. figtf

PRESIDENT REPORT
1979 - 1980
First of all I wish to express my sincere thanks to all those
members who done so much throughout the year for the benefit of
the Branch.
The year has seen another small step forward with bthe purchase of
a HF and VHF Transceiver, the start of a Tasmanian Amateur Radio
history by B3ill VK 7 TE of which a lot of support is still requimwed
by Bill. A special thanks is extended here to Xen VK 7 ZKT for
his ef“orts in getting the Club Room Cperating Room up to its
present standard. There are a few things still to be done but I
feel sure they will be car~ied out in the New Year.
TARC hosted by the Branch this year owes its great success to Reg
V7 7 KX and his host of helpers. The Ladies Committee also share:
the credit for TARC's success, without their support the few
functions held during the last year would have been a flop. e
still have a problem of lack of participation for functions oy
the members., It is appreciated that members cant support evory—:
thin~ but it would be nice to see some support at least one once™
in a while,
Pinally I would like to thank Brian VK 7/ ZBY for taking over for-me.
I cot to a stage where I felt that I lost interest and wasnt giving
my all to the Jjob. I believe when this happens one should step
aside and let someone else who is interested do the job, so I did.
I wish the incoming llanagement Commnittee all the best for a
prosperous and progressive year.

DX NOTES -~ COL VKTLZ
The main topic of conversation on the DX bands this month has without
doubt been the Heard Island activity - or lack of, At the time of
writing it appears as if successful SC's will be very limited in spite
of the exposure on the amateur bands over the last few months, however
both receiver and transmitter troubles have plagued the operations. Here
in VK7 7AE and 7BC both made QSO's and must be congratulated.
Vost of the DXpeditions previously mentioned in these notes or on the
Sunday morning broadcasts have not eventuated however VK9XT on Christmas
island started on time and after a weeks operations has 5000 §SO's in his
log. wOL to VK30T. Steve is working all bands, mainly on SSB.
7BC mentions that N6DX and possibly other operators will be in the
Pacific area from the 22 April promoting 7ZK2, FW¥ and A35 using all bands
1.8m/hz through to 52 m/hz.
ONGBC the &SL manager for TZ4AQS is said to be operating from TZ4 at
present but to date he has not been heard here.
ZL2BCF/A Campbell Island was 3SC'ed on 14.135m/hz by the local DX gang
on the 18 March but the duration of this stay could not be ascertained.
5L to ZL2BCF.
VKTRE advises that a Russian DX net compered by UA3DEA operates every
night on 14.250m/hz at 15002 with some good DXpopping up at times including
Pranz Joseph Land.
Tm/hz the underated DX band produced VK9XT, LU4EGE, K7SE/PU5 also JA's
and VE's in just one hours listening between 0900Z and 10002 on the 19
March, all on SSB., K7SE is on a Caribbean crawl and will be working from
VP2 QTH's also,
14m/hz always has DX but it depends on your DXCC tally how high it
rates for listening time LU3ZY has been copied here on occasions, out the
odds are 1000 to 1 in favour of the JA's,
28m/hz possibly only due to an 0ld timers "the good o0ld days™ pipe
dreams does not appear to have come up to expectations however, over the
last couple of weeks Asians and Europeans at varying signal levels have
been heard from 0700Z with stations from the USSR and northern Europe
the most consistent - thats if you have a JA filter. Africa has pro-
duced some excellent openings with SO signals during our afternoocns but
are not consistent, this band has to be watched to get results.
QSL's sighted recently include TZ44QS, TLgBG, HCSEE, D4CBS/J5, 8Z4A,
and LU3ZY,
Steve VKIXT advised that in the first 7 days operation frcm Christmas
Island he 4SOed.
HS1, n44, YC, VSé, 29, JT, KC6, Jia and VK4 - 6 and 8 on 52 m/hz the
time slot being 1200Z to 1500Z,
Steve also had a beacon operating on 52,005 m/hz and the monitored
28.885 but no reports of Steve being received down here.

SCENE AND HEARD - By BEarwig
After an absence of some months, it is my pleasure to resume this
column. wuite a lot has happened in the world of DXing in the past few
months, and it is my intention to keep you abreast with what is happening.
Many stations are discontinuing the policy of 3SLing the listener's
reports. The main reason is financial; the high cost of postage and high
labour costs have led to a scaling down even to the abandonment of this
integral part of DXing. There also is an attitude of indifference to
listeners letters and comments. The policies of these broadcasters is
extremely short-sighted for it will turn the listeners away and not attract
them when they want the audience to listen to the information and entertain-
ment they provide.
As a result of W,A.R.C. in Geneva, the existing short wave broadcasting
bands have been extended officially to what is in fact thede facto occupa-
tion of their frequencies. Also a new band has been created from 13,600
to 13,800 KHZ, 50, S.wW. Broadcasting has increased and not decreased as
a result of W.A.71.C.
Quite a number of stations have good DX oriented programmes, to keep
the listeners informed with what is happening. Programmes such as the
World Radio Club on the BBC, DX Jukebox, etc provide weekly sessions of
news, HCJB in Quito provides three editions of their popular "DX
partylene". The programme is heard on Saturday, londay and Thursday
at O900GMT on the usual HCJB outlets, with not only news of DX, but also
activities from the many clubs around the world.
The Southern Cross DX Group based in Adelaide publishes a newsletter
entitled "The DX Post". It contains the latest news of what has been
logzed and advance information from the stations, as well as members
help and advice. Write to P.0O. Box 336, Adelaide for details.
For those interested in a get-together to exchange ideas and recent
loggings, are invited to a gathering at 39 Freeland Crescent, Launceston
on the 18 April at 8.00 pem. If you are interested please ring Hans De Jonge
on (003) 27 3375 or ring me on (003) 44 2324 for fruther details.
Finally, here are two low power stations heard here., Turn to 26.020KHZ
and listen for HCJB at about 0600Z, This transmitter is only running
100 watts; and is a converted 11 meter ham rig. It is only an experimental
operation, heard in North America, Europe and the South Pacific to test
propogation. You won't hear it every day but when the band is open, an
occasional I/D is possible.
No. 2 is in the middle of the novice part of 80 metres, and can only be
heard when there is not much activity. It is a low power transmitter in
Indonesia on 3.578KHZ, heart about 1330Z in Indonesian. It was very weak
and had a musical programme with some commercials. Believed to be in
Situbundo, Indonesia.
Well, that is all until next month.
