It was my intention to have the Treasuz"er’s Report ou the front page this
month, However, after attending the Anrual General Meeting in Hobart T'11 just
have to write a few lines about the pathetic situation that exists there. OF
approximately 100 Members in the Hobart area, only 14 managed to attend the
meeting and 9 of these are office bearers! It seems incredible that we can h-wve
such a large concentration of amateurs in an area with a complete lack of intciect
in W.I.A. activities, To me it suggests that something is tecrribly wrong some.
" . where, whether it be the orsanisation or lack thereof, whatever it is, it m.s®
be singled out and rectified immediately, otherwise it could well be the begir.iiic
‘ of the end of W.I,A., in Tasmania,
JOHN VK7JV,
EDITOR.

Cur March lectlure by Rex lcLean, VK7RB, showed how to find it. If we stick
with our power measurcicnt system it would be rore like 400 watts |
Rex demonstrated end explaincd the operation of his 4 x TA50 system designed
to operate in the Princess Theatre.
The TAR0 is a hybrid power ampiifier introduced about 6 ronths ago. Each
wmit can give 105 wabtt output without pushing, In his application each it was
driving a separate snezker system enabling a balance of tonal quality by simply
increasing the volume of the amplifier driving the speaker which has the frequency
response requiring boosting,
The units give < 17 distortion at 120 watt output and can withstand a dead
short for 5 scconds, Their acoustic efficiency was amazing, Winding the input
voltege down frow 60 volts to 2 volts showed very little sound level decrease and
no apparent distortion, at this 1 watt level, I'm sure that the drinkers in
the pub next door will agree with us that the system was rost impressive,

FRFERFEARI
NORTH- WEST ZONE
From the N,W. point of niew the Field Day at Port Sorell was an outstanding
success, We were delighted with the attendance and co-operaticn of the Nerthemn
Branch, (See Breadcast 19/3/72.) It was cvident that the ladies and children
really got together and made their day successful and enjoyable and this is an
importent aspect of any field day. It would be int-erestjng to Imow how nany
grendrothers were present, I know of 4 at least. Everyone was so co-operative
that organising the show beccare a real pleasure, I have never known so rany to
be involved or so meny willing helpers. The N,W, Zone say thankyou to everyone
who centributed even if it was just being there. A reguest by two young ladies
for "CHAPS FOTU CHICKS" will be kept in mind for next time, We werc pleased to
weloeme Ted 7EJ who called in for a time. Competitions were conducted and winners
were:; Throwing the rolling »in - Sue éAtkinson‘ Guessing the string . Pam Sarphy,
Guessing the frequency 7ZGJ and 7MZ.
REPCRTOCRICKET MATCHBY N,W. CBSERVER,
The game was o forgone conclusion, N.W, »ut pu a brilliant pcrfornence with
the bat and with 3 men short., Around 58 runs were scored in quick time, Un.-
fortunately onc was ceught out by a M.V, locker-on! Can't figore that cne, The
North's ba‘tting performance was a dismal affair and after 16 members had batted
without reaching the N,W, tctal, threc ladies, namely Joy, Ann end Phil were sentg
in to try to pull the side out of trouble, Although they did a wonderful job, it
wasn't enough! nd so N.W, retricved the Cup cnce again, Thanks for a fine game
chaps,

DR\vEN LELEMENT
e . REFléCTeR
Abovc is a handy portable 4 clerent beam which 1 censtructed recently for use on.
the reccent "Wational Ficld Day," I was so pleased with the end result, mechanically
end clectrically, I thought some other people may be interested in the details,
The boen is 1" alurminiun tubing, Elements 3/8" elurinium tubing, For ease of
folding up, the clerents are attached to the beom by the use of "long yagi® type
cormercial T.V, brackets fitted vith screens and butterfly wing nuts, To fold the
boon up, the wing nuts are loosened and the clements folded carefully towards the boon,
clarping themn in one of thc adjacent element brackets, The wing nuts can then be
re-tightened end the beam is ready for transport, Matching to feeder line (assuring
co-ax) is cdone by the use of a garma match, The conventional variable capacitor is not
used, Instead the gamma consists of 1 piece of 3/8" aluriniun tubing with another
short lenszth of 3/16" alurimium or rod slicding inside this again, It rust of course
be insulated from the outer tube, and the outer tube insulated frem the brom by the use
cf two plastic standoffs, By varying the inner tube and the position of the garma tap,
I achieved an SWR of 1.2 : 1 measured at the aerial., The use of this type of ganma
ratch does net require the use of the physical capacitor and attendent weather
oroofing prcblems, For further details, refer to AR ILL.
Conncction to the coax fecder line was made by the use of a belling lce plug
end sockets, assuming " coax, (75CHm) The socket was mounted on a smell bracket
attached to the hoom, Cennect a short jurper wire from the end of the cuter tube
of Garmar to a small alligater clip, The small clip is then attached te the ceatre
spigot of the coax socket, This may scund a bit hairy, but the bean here is only
used for portable use and thus only required for short pericds of time, The clip
ideca does however allow quick and easy packing or assenbly of the heam,
The measurements were tazen direcctly from A.R.R.L. For clements, spacing ete,
there could be rcom for experiment here, if onc¢ has the tire end desire, I have
not done any electrical tests cn same, howcver it appearcd te give a good account
cf itsclf during the Field Day, werking VK3's from VK7,

PAGE 6,
It is a pleasure to present this year's balance sheet, As you can see,
every venturc wndertaken this year shows a profit, Some points of clarification
are in order, The profit shown for CRM is nainly due to denations received in
the early stages, this will dwindle with the increascd postal charges,
The Hanfest was a success financially; the main reason for this being
the wonderfuly support of the mcrbers and their wives with supply of food.
The large profit of the equipment store is due to an extreordinary large increase
in tumover and a couple of cash transactions of which only the profit is
included,
The arount for debtors may scen large, however this is mainly due to the
fact that a quantity of material was sont to varicus people in the North West
two days prior to the closing of our becks., We will enceawour tc obtain
different supplies for the coning year and take this opportunity to thank the
nerbers for their support during the ycar,
