            * As I haven't received the Northern Notes or the Notes from the
North West this issue must be about the smallest I have ever
p had the misfortune of doing. Rather than not having a QORM
' issue at all this month it was decided to go to print with
. the DX and VHF notes only as there is at least something of
v interest. I hope that future issues will be back to the
usual standard or it will not be worth going to the trouble
of typing and printing. It seems that there is more material
available for a Broadcast each Sunday

HF and DX notes by Col Wright VK7LZ.

Checking back through my log over the last 3 years
it appears as though the only significant difference this
year is the absence of the African stations that were usually
Q0SO'ed around 0700Z on 7MHz, in previous years the odd station
from EA8, 6W8, CT3, CN8 and EA9 have appeared in my log,
however nothing has been heard this year from these areas,
lets hopefully consider that the rising sunspot cycle is the
reason and stations are migrating to the higher frequencies
but judging by the activity, or lack of it, on 14MHz such
is not the case. However listening on the bands reveals an
upsurge in DXpeditions, although not always audible here activity
has been noted from OJ@MA (Market Reef), OF2BR/OFZ (Aland Island),
F@PCH/FC (Corsica), IJ7EX (San Pietra) and JJ1DRR/JD1 and the next
two months will produce the following, Tokelau Islands, ZM7
will again be activated by either ZM7AT or ZM7MM on Sept. 10th
all bands SSB and CW, period of operation unknown.
Galapagos Islands, according to Luigi I@LLZ this
country will be on the air during September, HC5EE will be
the operator and the call-sign is expected to be HDSEE.
Kermadec Islands, a YL team from ZL will operate from
these Islands commencing on the 2lst of October using SSB and
CW, up to 15 WPM only on CW please, bands to be used will be
1.8 to 28MHz operation will cease on the 5th November.
           Stations noted on the bands           are as   follows;
1.8MHz, VK's only although DX should start to appear as these
           notes are been read.
3.5MHz, Outside of VK and ZL the only DX heard has been JA's
           on CW,
7MHz, Here again the W's and JA's predominate although CO20M,
FOBEX, KV4CI/KG6, XE1lAO and YV4NS have been logged in
the evening local time with a few VE's and Asiatic
           UA's, all on CW
 14MHz, The following stations were logged, CO2HZ, DJ's, EA'S,
           EAB0Z, F'S, F@CH/FC, FK's FM7WS, FO8AZ, FOB8EX, G's,

It is interesting to note that the VK7 QSL bureau
has already received more inward QSL's than the full total
for 1976 and the outward QSL's are also well up.

VHF notes by Joe Gelston VK7JG,.
Not a lot of news this month, the last 6 metre contact
being with Harry VK4ZHG at Gympie on the 23rd last month, signals
peaked to a 5/6 with very deep QSB.
Dont forget to keep an ear on the band during the
equinox period along with the increase in sun-spots you may
experience some trans equatorial propagation to JA.
2 Metres is just as inactive, if you want an SSB
contact you either have to phone or arrange a contact via the
repeater, perhaps we could arrange a regular calling time and
frequency each night to promote activity.
A new station in town is Andre VK3ZEE/& and is active
on 2 metres SSB using an IC202.
Dont forget to enter your log in both the R.D. contest
and the Athol Johnson contest. Logs for the Athol Johnson
contest go to the VHF Officer P.O. Box 1311 Launceston 7250.
That is all for this month so how about a little more
activity for these notes next month.

Make the radiator out of at least 3 pieces of reducing
aluminium and the radials from one piece of tubing 18' long
L" diameter or larger.
Use a Grid Dip Oscillator to adjust the coil turns
until resonance is obtained at 28.5MHz.
Close the variable capacitor (minimum capacity) and
adjust the tap on the coil (about 1% turns) for minimum VSWR
then adjust the capacitor for zero reflected power.

CONSTRUCTION; Use a HORWOOD 2"x 3'"x 8" box for the base
assembly and assemble as per the diagram. I used a pair of
mobile aerial insulators to support the radiator

11 metre "Ringo'" to 10 metres. by Joe VK7JG

To adjust a Ringo antenna designed for 27MHz operation
to 28.5MHz the following modifications are required.
First shorten the radiator to 16'7". Reduce the
matching ring in size untill the a=rial resonates at 28.5MHz
To do this with the Middy-V aerial unscrew the
matching ring in the middle and place the hole of one side
over the matching slot of the other then replace screw.

Now drill a series of holes,in the matching ring, up
from the earth end and adjust the gamma arm for minimum
reflected power. All adjustments must be made with the base of
the aerial connected to a satisfactory earth.
