QRM COMMENT
This month QRM is going Statewide; we welcome all our Southern readers
and hope that this move will further the Amateur Radio cause within our island.
For a small island we seem to lack cohesiveness as amateurs, perhaps this
Journal can draw us closer together = Southern members can send articles, tit-
biZs, news, etc., through Micce VKTMC - P.,0. Box 52, Sorell, 7172 = Phone bus.
306175. o o
Elsewhere in this issue is a page which can be removed, signed,
addressed and then despatched via the P.0. regarding channel 5A - A1l the work
is done - NOW in case you think channel 5A will go away all by itself, the
problem is being perpetuated even further by the fact that a channel 1 translator
will come into service on the north coast shortly - more problems! So get that
letter off to your MP.
Still ene or two circuit boards left for the PLL AFSK generator - see
the Northern Branch store.
Because of the extra workload involved in QRM it is now necessary to get
more organised. From the September issue there will be a "packing night" at the
Northern Branch Clubrooms - Monday, September 4th - we would like at least six
members please - Also required a volunteer (per month) to address labels - I'll
arrange the September issue - thereafter names please!
Please support the Ladies Committee - they are doing it for our benefit =
see article inside.
Finally, if there is an article you would like to see in QRM - let us
know - & short note, or phone call will do the trick.

DX NOTES by Col VK7LZ
Following the normal winter pattern most of the better DX is being worked
during daylight hours. However, due to high sclar activity conditions have varied
day to day, although 14 mhz has still carried a lot of the DX load 21 mhz has
improved considerably particularly to Africa and it is rare indeed not to hear a 25
or ZE of an afternoon local time, Due to limited listening time 28 mhz has been
neglected, however, other DXers have not reported anything exciting. 7TMC has come
to the rescue with some news that proves 7 mhz to be still worth watching.
"Break in" this month gives a list of the new prefixes to be issued by the
FCC for the US possessions - these are: Pacific area: Canton Islands KH1;
Guam KH2; Johnston Is. KH3; Mjidway Island KH4; Kingman Reef KHS5K; Palneyreu KHS;
Hawaii KH6; Kure KH7; Samoas KH8; Wake Island KH9. Caribbean area :
Mavassa KP1; Virgin Islands KP2; Serrana Bank KP3; Puerto Rica KP4.
Several new prefixes will also be heard from the US mainland in future.
EXPEDITIONS -~ Mellish Island - Due to the slow voyage from Sri Lanka
of the vessel being used for the trip, the slant of operations will be at least a
fortnight later and could now commence late September.
Sable Island - VE1AZ advises that no activity is planned this year.
Kermadec Island - 2LZBJU/K will be active from the above location until
15th August.
Mt. Athos - Don't overlook any station using the SY1 prefix on SV1 plans
to activate Mt. Athos in the near future.
Nawassa Island.- Scheduled start of operations is 27th November.

VHF NOTES by Joe VKT7JG
Once again very little has been happening although there have been a
couple of openings on 6 metres, but for rather short durations on 25/6/78. Worked
VK2BQJ at 2330 on 26/6., Graeme VK2ZZV rang to say that VK7RNT was 5/9 in Sydney and
would appreciate a contact. This is one disadvantage of a beacon especially when
you have been asleep for over an hour. Again on Sunday 9/7 at 1130 local Linsey
VK4ALM popped up just long enough to exchange reports of S/2-5/6 and then disappeared.
Since then have monitored S2,050 almost every day but heard nothing. TV CHf has been
watchable on many occasions but no stations worked. I cannot report on 2 metres
VKTDK has been using it for the past month and became the second VK7 to work VK¢ on

SIMPLE COMMERCIAL KILLER by Wally VKT7ZWX
You may have noticed that, at times, certain TV programmes have an audio
level which is quite low compared to normal. The practice, in order to hear the
programme is to turn up the vclume on the set to a comfortable level., Usually it
is found when a commercial comes on, the level is loud enough to be quite annoying.
The following circuit will drop the TV sound level to an acceptable loudness with-
out having to leave one's comfortable chair. (The circuit can be adapted to
other uses too ... the only limit upon the applications is one's imagination.)
Circuit Description
The commercial "killer" uses a NES555
timer IC as a schmidt trigger. A
cadmium sulphide cell, (Light
Dependent Resistor L.D.R.) with a
light resistance value of about 300
ohms and a dark resistance value of
about 5 ohms is used as the control
element in the circuit.
Mode of Operation
The L.D.R. is placed in a position ToRCH :
where it can be illuminated by a L.D.R. PHILIPS TYPE
torch from somewhere in the room,
The 25k pot. is then adjusted to 2322 ~b600 - 9500/
operate the relay, thus "killing"
the sound when the beam of the torch
illuminates the L.D.R.
Components Used
The choice of relay is not critical, however it must be stressed that the maximum
current drawn by the NE555 be less than 200 mA., A good way to choose the relay
from the junk box is to connect it across a 9 volt battery and measure the current
drawn., If the relay will operate in this test, it will work in the circuit.
The value of the resistance R which is shunted across the TV speaker to drop the
output volume is determined by experiment. Start off with a.high value, say 15
ohms # watt and work your way down, increasing the power rating of the resistor
as you go0.
Precautions
One precaution should be stressed. This method of reducing the output of a TV
set is by way of "rute force" and as such should only be used with a valve type
set, If the TV is a transistorised type, the relay should be used to control
another part of the audio amplifier circuitry.

"SCENE AND HEARD" by Earwig
One invaluable aid that I have found in SWLing is the World Radio TV Hand-
book., This book lists all the current radio and television broadcasting stations
throughout the world, and is a must for the serious Dxer. With the aid of this
handbook, it's possible to identify foreign language programmes as well as providing
programme and frequency information. It also has a supplement at the back with tips
to the Dxer, such as antennas, digital frequency counters, clandestine broadcast
information, ete. It is priced at $12.95 at most reputable bookstalls and is well
worth the money invested.
Did you hear the Israeli Radio from Jerusalem with their Russian language
programmes at 0345z on 15435 khz? No, I would not be surprised. Hardly had the
Interval Signal finished when a host of "jammers" opened up on the frequency and
virtually wiped the Israeli off the air. Since the trial of the Soviet dissidents,
it is noticeable that "jammers" have increased particularly on programmes beamed to
the Eastern Bloc.
Also according to the WRTH the USSR has over 250 transmitters in service
for broadcasting on Short Wave alone! You will also have noticed that there is
very little difference between the various external outlets despite their different
calls. Take 12060 khz for instance. From 0200 to 0250 Radio Kiev broadcasts and
then Radio Moscow is on in Spanish, then its radio Peace & Progress in English
until s/off at 0500. And not once did the transmitter break signal.
While we are on Russians - listen for Vladivostock on 4040 Khz at 1030 z.
It carries its own programme at this time for 30 minutes before switching to the
"Mayak" network., Sinpo Reading 44344.
The Solomon Islands recently gained their independence. Honiara was
logged on 5020 khz at 1100 with a news programme. Its Sinpo reading was 55334,
Radio RSA, the Voice of South Africa was monitored here in Launceston with
the programme "Good Morning Africa" at 0630. It is on 17780 at quite reasonable
strength. Also coast station ZSJ in Cape Town was logged on 17130 at 0625z.
Well, that is all for this month, until next time, 73 es good listening.

A, T, V., - SIMPLE AS ABC
Although several Vidicon fast scan camera circuits have been published in
recent times, on investigation, none of these really filled the bill as far as my
requirements were concerned.
This circuit is not over complicated, but has had many modifications over
two or three years to enable it to be easily duplicated with readily available
components,
Somé of the circuitry was originally based on a camera described by W8TYY
but this had some drawbacks, WABRMC described an excellent high quality camera
recently in "Ham Radio™ but unfortunately this circuit required + and - supplies
of up to 45 volts. I desired something in between that could be run from a 12
volt supply for portable work, such as field days, etc.
Another useful point in this design is that the scanning oscillators are
driven from a crystal locked syne pulse generator, and a separate processing
amplifier is used to enable the use of inbuilt test signals derived from the
tuning source. In later articles I will give information on winding yokes and
coils suitable for common one inch Vidicons such as 7735, 7038,
As this camera is built mainly on three circuit boards, I will briefly
describe the horizontal board first.
This consists essentially of a unijunction oscillator, TR1, and buffers
TR2 and TR4, which in-turn drive the output stage TR3 and the BT generator TR6.
The line output stage must be a high voltage type as it delivers about a 100 volt
pulse 10 us wide to the line deflection coils, This stage gave trouble earlier
with transistors suffering secondary breakdown, but is no problem with the types
shown. The result is a sawtooth current waveform in the yoke. R2 is a width
control. L1 can be a commercial horizontal oscillator coil on a small pot core
(about one inch diameter) but is not very critical; inductance about ten milli-
henrys.
The pulse from buffer stage TR4 passes through several shaping stages
then to the output stage TR6, an NSD 102, The HT transformer from another design
was a pot core type FX2240, but these were uncbtainable, The one used eventually
did not have any number on it but was about one inch diameter mounted on a square
base of fibre board. There was an adjusting slug in the centre. This one
apparently came from an audio filter unit so any audio type should work OK. The
small neons are similar to the ones fitted as indicators in power points and in
series provide regulation at about 290 volts for the Vidicon electrode voltages.
Since commencing this design some I.0,'s have become readily available
such as 555 timer, which would be used possibly to advantage in the timing
oscillators,

NORTH WEST BRANCH NEWS BY JIM UK7NOW
The July meeting of the branch was held as usual in Lakin's Hall, Ulverstone,
and despite very wintery cunditions, we had another good attendance.
VISITORS: Allan Simpson of Sulphur Creek was welcomed by all. Allan will
nu doubt be heard un the air after the August Exam. He obtained almost
perfect passes in Theory and Regs in the previous Exam but missed out on CU-
which is amazing because Allan can copy 10 wpm easily when CU is sent correctly.
MINUTES: of the previous meeting were read by the Secretary and passed
by all members.
INWARD CORRESPONDENCE: AR letter was received from Bub Jordun VK7JR of
King Island. Beb remitted his fee fur QRM , AR, and etc. and gave some
details of his equipment, antennae stc.
OUTWARD CORRESPONDENCE: Nune.
TREASURER'S REPORT: Ivan VK?NGA/?DA gave ths meeting details uf Receipts
and Expenditure. The branch _finance situation is very sound.
COUNCIL: Paul - VK7ZPB advised among other matters of a Raffle in aid of T.A.R.C.
1978. Several excellent prizes are offered. Paul made goud sale of tickets
after the meeting as the raffle ticket selling time ran uut un last Saturday.
Paul also advised that a cumplete set uf Display material is
being obtained for this branch.
GENERAL BUSINESS: Our Chairman advised of the availability of a number
of phyptucopied letters to Mr. Staley regarding Channel 5A.u:zHe hoped that
these would be sent of post haste to his office, thus building up lobby which
is required to have this matter totallt reviewed.
T.A.R.C. 1978 will be held during the long weekend in November.
Three venues have been discussed. Thz Southern Branch is waiting the outcome
of negotiations and will advise as soon as they can which venue. Tha
Southern Branch would like a goud attendance from the North and North-Uest.
ACTIVITIES: Officers Shane and Stephen advised that next meeting
would be given a talk on the forthcoming "R.D." contest by Max VK7MX. With
the wealth of experienced gained over years of "R.D.'S" the information will
be well received.
Shane asked that all members take part in the "R.D." cuntest. If
every member submitted a lug it wuuld help VK7 towards a win this year. Last
year we missed out by unly a few cuntacts, maybe just one extra lug.
JAMBOREE OF THE AIR: It was suggested that a Scout and Guide camp be set
up this year and contacts be made from these sites. One site was suggested
at Gowrie Park and the Guides have uffered their site at Myalla for this
function. The branch was asked to provide uperators for both sites -
including Full Calls, Z Calls and Novices.
Page 12 QR M ’ August 1978
NOVICE CLASSES: The Novice classes are proceeding well. Seeing that
around 50 applicants from the Coast could be sitting for the next Novice
Exam, it seems pointless having to travel all the way to Hobart when applicants
fer a Full Call can sit at any suitable Post O0ffice. With this in mind, our
Chairman is going to contact P & T Dept., to see if this Exam can be held in
the Burnie Technical College.
Q.R.M.: A regquest from our Sub-Editor for Articles, Drawings,
circuits, tips, experiences would be most useful to all readers. Address is
Mrs. J. Fudge, 22 Elliott Street, West Ulverstone, 7315.
NEW MEMBERSHIP: Ross MacKenzie was accepted for membership with the
Insitiute.
A.R.R.L. HANDBOOKS: It was advised that 80 or so of these books will
be available socon. Price $3.
APOLOGIES: Were recived from the following members;
Harold - UK7MZ; Max - Vk7MX who is trying to shake of a severe cold, probably
got will babysitting the neighbour's lamb.; Bill VK7AK, who we understand has
gum boils, (too much Rag Chewing the cause ?) Ray UK7ZRG ~ shaking of a cold
too.; Harry Cumpsey of Burnie.
CLIFF - VUK7CD gave a most interesting and enlightening talk on his work
on SSTV, illustrating it with large drawings. The talk was well received
by the meeting and, because of the fact that with SSTV, one is dealing with
Audio Tones ranging from 1500Hz to 2300 Hz, which are fed into the Mic input
circuit, we should soon see Novices taking up SSTV with the same enthusiasm
that they have populated the 10 metre Band. At the close of the talk Cliff
told members that he had retired from work and was moving to the Sunshine
State, VK4 land., Cliff was farewelled by all members who wished him bon
voyage.
NEXT MONTH:
gim VK7NOW is preparing a serialised article for QRM with acknowledgement
EB-A.W.A., New York (Antique Wireless Association). Is is called the
"RJ4 DETECTOR MYSTERY " and makes fascinating reading, in fact so much so
that it has not been in any Australian Roadioc Journal. The series deals
with the introduction of the TRIODE (from where are hobby emanates) and
mentioned three famous names, - WALLACE, Dr. LEE DEFOREST, and E.H.
ARMSTRONG It blows "sky-high" the story that DEFOREST designed the
first AUDION (TRIODE) Also illustrated will be a photocopy of the
ORIGINAL TRIODE DETECTOR CIRCUIT as used by WALLACE, 2 years before Deforest
the photocopies of the original circuits as used by these 3 p oneers will
also be shown.
This winds up our notes for this month, so in the meantime, cheers and keep
your antennae in the right direction,

STATE NEWS
In order to save duplicated effort the Northern Branch has agreed to
supply their Bulletin, 'QRM' to all VK7 WIA members. This obviates the need for the
"Bulletin' insert in 'A.R.' and means that news will reach you sooner. Financial
arrangements are yet to be finalised however it is likely to be to everyone's
advantage. Thanks to the Northern Branch, particularly Editor John VK7CCC, for their
cooperation and it is hoped everyone will assist with news and articles to ensure
state-wide representation. Council reporter Reg Emmett, VK7KK
COUNCIL MEETINGS
A full attendance at June's Hobart meeting and July's at Devonport.
Tan VK7ZIE and Kirby VK7KC were visitors at July's meeting. Amongst matters discussed;
Personal contact with members whose subscriptions are outstanding has resulted in
only very few non-renewals. Comparison of Repeater standards; Channel 5A prolems;
encouragement of RD Contest operation;replacement of Bulletin ,QRM backing and
progress on new Northern Branch Box number were mentioned.
Council is investigating an insurance cover for members, particularly when
involved with Emergency Communications. Both a personal accident/ medical cover and
a public liability policy is likely to be purchased.
The problem of collecting suitable publicity display material was discussed and.
work has started on organising permanent display material. The need for this was
emphasised following a request from the N.C.R.A. for a publicity exhibit at their
Convention at Wrest Point from September 1 - 4 . Council are to support this request
and also arranged to forward a written publicity article for their Convention hand-
out. Anyone who can assist is setting up this display would, of course, be welcome.
It was confirmed that Brian VK7RR and Andrew VK7AW will attend: the Emergency
Communication Seminar on 19-20 July and their expenses covered.
The North West Branch was given permission to use call VK7WI for the RD Contest.
The method of handling new member's subscriptions has worried us for some time.
A suggestion which might reduce handling has been made to Federal Executive and this
involves us refunding a members' surplus subscription rather than it sitting in the
bank as at present. July's transactions;

frequencies to fit the band plan seemed necessary. Hence Launceston's beacon will
eventually operate on 52.470 MHz and Hobart's on 52.475 MHz.

R.D. CONTEST
It is hoped everyone will make a real attempt to participate this year.
Unfortunately alittle more than a minimal log is required- just participation is not
enough under the present rules. Those giving a major effort rely on everyone's support.
Study the point scoring table to ensure your efforts are used to the greatest benefit.
Log sheets are available from branches and one log sheet and a cover page will be
included in August A.R..
NEWS BROADCAST will not be presented on sunday that weekend. It will commence at
5-30 pm on saturday 12 August.
INTRUDER WATCH COORDINATOR

COMING "RD" CONTEST
The time is ripe for Tasmania to win this years "RD" contest - the oppor-
tunity exists, and with a bit of effort we can do it.
The N.¥W. branch are making an all out effort, and Max VK7TMX is giving a
lecture next month telling how it should be done.
The Northern branch members too are going to work hard - logs will be
collected at the regular meeting - that way we will know who tried!!
Mike VKTMC tells me he is going to move the Southern boys = so lets all
work together. If you know someone with a callsign and no gear = drive around
to his location and get him mobile - If you have spare equipment -« lend it for
the duration of the contest = get your branch active using the club call and
all those keen SWLS on the air.

REMEBERENCE DAY CONTEST IN THE NORTH WEST
12th August - 13 th August
EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE
This year the North West Branch is endeavouring to obtain full participation
in this cuntest, whether they be full calls, associates of S.W.L.'s.
There are 3 ways in which Asscciates & S.W.L. can participate.
1, Submit a Receiver's lug.
2. Be a log keeper for other operators.
3¢ Operate yourself.
VK7WI/P will be operating during the contest. This station will be open
to all members and non-members for operating. Everyone is welcome.
At this stage, it will be situated at the home of Tony, VK7AX, 11 Fulton
Btreet, Ulverstone.
Full Calls: Try for a good score, not just a minimum entry. Use all
bands to the best advantage as you have few limitations. Use VHF and
give some interest for Z calls. Each contact add 2 points.
Limited Calls: Could give calls every 2 hours on VHF. The more stations
the better.
Novices: Novices contributed greatly last year, with the result that many
of themmade very high scores. Try for a good scoreand use all bands, also
note times which local contact can bemade.
REMEMBERf 11111 Even a log of 20 or 30 contacts will help us just that
little more in the final count and with good luck and total partisipation
VK& could win this year’s contest.
For further details contact Shane Fuller 37 2594

Dear teceeccococcsnssoscscsnsses MP
The letter enclosed is a protest against the continued use of VHF TV
channels for new services in Australiz when UHF TV would provide an interference
free system., You may not think that this problem would apply in Tasmania but
even here we use all available channels for the main stations plus translators.
Chan 5A is in use at Table Cape and problems have already occurred there.
Translators particularly could be on UHF but we have recent information that
additional translators on the North West Cozst are to use low VHF channels.
These channels are prone to interference from mainland stations and even New
Zealand in the summer months, as well as from taxi, CB and Amateur services.
Ask around your electorate, see how poor some of these services become
at times.
Yours faithfully,
The Hon. A. A. Staley,
Minister of Post and Telecommunications,
Parliament House,
CANBERRA, ACT. 2601
THTU secvececscssssssnss MNP
Dear Sir,
As a licensed Amateur Radio operator I wish to voice my dismay at the
proposed further extension of VHF television services especially with the use
of Channel 5A.
International agreements cover the use of radio frequencies but Govern-
ments can make changes to suit local conditions if no interference is caused to
other countries. Channel 5A frequency band is assigned internationally to space
and meteorological satellites. The adjacent band of 144 to 148 mhz is the 2
metre amateur band. The amateur band is truly international with today's use of
satellites, moon bounce and new propogation modes, whereas Channel 5A is not
recognised internationally.
The use of this non-standard TV channel can only result in interference
to its reception from properly operated 2 metre amateur stations. It will only
be a repeat of what happened when TV Channel O was allocated portion of the
amateur 6 metre band and what remained became unusable during viewing hours for
amateur purposes.
The history of frequency allocation for TV and F¥ broadcasting in
Australia is poor. The original 10 channels for TV were extended to 13 by using
the FM broadcast band for some TV channels, The reversal in the use of the FM
band, after the FM inquiry, reduced the number of available VHF channels and
should have been the time to introduce UHF television. Not so, for apparent
political reasons the VHF available channels continue to be used for planned new
services and as Channel 5A has been the least used up to now, because of the known
interference problems, it has become the prime new channel,
1 see you are having second thoughts on a recent decision, the promised
withdrawal of CB radio from 27 mhz in 1982, as being unworkable. So, Mr. Staley,
don't let us have another political decision in regard frequency management.
Have the new TV services introduced on UHF and save us and the public the inevit-
able problems of trying to co-exist on adjacent bands.
Yours faithfully,
