"The turmlt and the shouting dies®, The dinncr is now history! But not
so the meeting, Fron corplirents reccived I mncludo;tfigelt the dinn.ur was a
success and I would like to thenk ry partners who co-opcrated to make it sc, Tony
78X, Harold M2z, Grahan 7ZAZ cnd Ien 7ZIE in particular, We would like to thank
the personel of the Gatcway Motor Inn for a well prepared tasty rcal, served in
such plecasant surrcoumcings, No doubt the reeting was disappointing , but the
circunstances surzfiunding it has engendercd a great 1ift in interest in Institute
affairs, Discussion has bcen hcard in nany quarters and sore serious thinking is
taking place, This is a good thing, DBut lct our thinking be govemed by what is
best for the Institute,
The North Westem area arpears to be quitc active on various bends, Two
nctre activity is good as usual, and a lot of work is going on at High Frequency,
Harcld MZ is busy on 20 M particularly, with a lot of c,w, contacts, Ken 7RH is
working then nainly on HF Mobile, Harry 7AR can be heard chasing rare DX and
gettin: then too, Les 7LH has overcore sore TX »roblems and is appearing on H,F,
againg As for mc MMX is knocking the odd Buropean on 20 etc, and on €M nublicising
the Golden J-bilce Award particularly in 7ZL, Don't forget chaps, these boys a“c
very keen and constantly locking for VK7 contacts, Rerember that sore of then
arc restricted tc 80M so please core on that band, I forecast that VK¥ will be
inundated with a~plications for the award latcr, A1l this is F,3, and contributes
to justifying cur existance, There 1s littlc use in getting all excited about
adrinistration if we negleet cormunication, So keep it going up the stigky

NEW STATICNS heard using the repeater include GERRY VK6ZDC whe was in Tassie for
a week, Gerry was using a 2 watt hand held tranceiver, Using a MR20D was NCIM
Vi2ZXC, Ncrn was in QSC with BRIAN 7RR when he rentioned that he was passing through
Dilston on the way to Hobart, It seems the maps handed out by the Tourist Departrent
could be a little clearcr, New calls using the repeater fron Launceston are
PHILVK7ZAX ancd ED VK7HE, :
JCE 726G was telling mc the other day that the best thing yet for protecting the
copper side of printed circuits is HAIR SPRAY, Apparently it is easicr 'to solder
through and gives goed protecticn., %
RCY VK7ZRG can now be classed as a Launcestonian as he has roved into his house at
Newstead, .
I don't know what the attraction is on the TCP island but they have been going
over at regular intervals, R, 7ZDY snd 7ZGT were in VK3 during the last few
wecks and 7DK is enjoying the corpany %f the VK5's and VK2's,

e e i ——————————
The QOECS//0 as rost operators know nakes en ideal nediun power final
arnlificr tube for rost types of service at V. H,F,
However when used as an ABD2 lincar with 8.S.3., difficulty was expericnced
in driving the plate current beyond the 150 n4 level, After scre experimenting
and circiut elteration it was found tc be duc to sclf developed bias acrcss the
rclatively high irpedance of the bias line, causing an A.L,C. action to occur,
This was producing a rathcr large ncgative feedback action by increasing the bias
applicd to all tubcs contrelled by the bias line in the transverter,
After discussions with Phil VK3FF, we found the rost satisfactory method
was tc usc zenor diodes tc hold the bias at a fixed level, this method proved to
be satisfactory, producing a substantial increase in plate current and thercfore
cutput, See Fiz, 1. =35 wlts of bias appears to be about corrcet giving a
standing plate current of approm, &0 nA with the supply weltages used, This wltazc
rating for thc zenors may be nade up by using & single dicde cr 2 or rorc in serics,

MIXERS -~ Several types of nixcrs have been tricd over the past months of
cxperinenting, sore arce shown below, one thing becarne evident after a few types
were tried, the QOEC2/5 nakes a far superior rixer at the levels used compared
to a QQEC3/12, The output and linearity of the 2/5 appear to be quite geod
also, The object of the exercise is to take a low lewvel cutput at 28 nHz
(about 1w PEP) rix it with 116 1Hz and -roduce 144 rHz SSB, The 116 nHz is
cbtained fron a xtal rultiplicd a suitablc nurber of tines, this needs tc be
a little rorc in level than the 28 mHz SSD, tc achicve gocod rixing, It is
possible to roverse the inputs to the rixer, but thc arrangerent shown is
dcsirable as a closcr look will show the 116 rHz to be driving the tube in
parallel while the output is in pushepull thercby cencclling this freq, in
the output, this may not bc so irportant with the fregs, used herce but in the
casc of a hetrodyning freq, closer to the output it would be nccessary., The
arrangerent shown in fig, 1 has the best perfornance all things considered,
preducing the greatest output for a given input: fig, 2 is very similar and
is used In may of thc "good becks™ however it is far rore critical tc input
levels, Fig, 3 works very well on 6 retres but has very low cutput on 2 metres
and secrs unsuitablc for this band,
