  VHF NOTES.
Once again there is nothing of interest to report.
Congratulations to all the Amateurs that passed the recent AOCP exam.
The only thing I would like to remind you of that TWO METRES is not
only the REPEATER and all its advantages but a full 4 Mhz to use.
Granted the repeater has its place for mobile activity as well as
enabling Z calls to communicate with other areas of K. but dont forget
the bottom end I44--I46 Mhz is also usable.
With the Summer approaching you will find that VK and VK5 REPEATERS
will also be accessable don't just press your TX button to see if you
are getting in, how about giving your CALL SIGN as well"!· With our own
repeater seven seconds of carrier or OIVE your call sign and the repeater
monthident for you. That is all for now hope to have more for you next

NORTHWEST BR.A.NCH NOTES
Despite a very wet night, there was a good
turn-up at the usual monthly meeting, 22
                  Members and Associates.
of the previous meeting were read and adopted.
MINUTES
Inwards. Several letters were 'read including one
CORRESPONDENCE from a member of the CB fraternity, who is one
of a number of CB'ers now studying for the
A.O.C.P. and the N.A.O.C.P. Hie wrote thanking
the North West Branch for allowing their members
to take part in the recent RD contest at VK7NW.
A letter was also read from the SUPT. P. & T.,
stating that three P. & T. Officers will be
attending, and amongst other things, will be
                giving a most instructive workshop.
This feature alone, should be worth looking at.
The Treasurer brought the meeting up to date
 FINANCE with the Financial situation.
IVAN VK7XL asked for any details needing
COUNCIL Councils attention. A lengthy discussion was
                 held on an important matter.
for VK7NW were discussed. Quotes and designs
9SL CARDS are to be investigated.
At a special meeting of Officials on Monday 15th
ARC, at Club Headquarters at Penguin, many matters
were dealt with including allocation of Space.
In the "RADIO, THEN" SECTION you will see
RADIOS from 1912 (a SPARK RX) right through to
FM STEREO. Patrons may actually listen to a
                 5 Tube Battery-operated 192l T.R.F. Radio,
using either the original 2,000 OHM Headphones,
or a genuine 1924 HORN Speaker. Be prepared
for a surprise as regards AUDIO quality.
Also displayed will be one of the very EIST
design of ELECTRO-DYNAMIC SPE.i-\..KER. This is
52 years old. Plus a whole lot more.
DON VK7 (now awaiting a FULL CALL) advised
9SL BURO. that NO STAMPS are needed on QSL's within the
VK Area. This is due to a very efficient service,
headed by CHAS, VK7CH & his Deputies.
Several details were discussed, which would
J,0.I,A. seem that this year's effort will be the best
yet. No less than 60 SCOUTS and GUIDES will be
at PEYTON PARK in the charge of VINCE VK7VH
Another big group will be located at SISTERS

You will remember that last month we mentioned rumours
of activity from an Indian Ocean location, also the possibility
of a Juan Fernandz operation - as we write these notes the
first is in fact taking place with three stations signing
FROD/J, FRORX/J and FROCIW/J and doing their best to take
Juan de Nova off the wanted list for many VK's and L's.
The operation commenced on the 15th of ~eptemper and after
one day of operation the team was put off the air by the
French police, it is said due to pressure from an amateur
operator from another island, quick action by the DXpedition
alerted the West Germans who contacted Paris and threatened
court action if the ban was not lifted. The full story is jet
to be revealed, however, at present all systems are on go.
Possibly the first VK7 to get through was VK7NRC - congrt
Barry - since then several others nave made it either on
G.., S8B or both.

Although much can be said for and against net operation
one thing is evident and that Was the co-operation of the FK7's
with VK7PA VK3OT and the various net controllers which gave
many VK's A QO which Would not otherwise been made.

The GEOX operation appears to be as far away ss even
nor has any more been heard about activity from Juan
Fernandez.

Generally September was a month to be remembered by
many DX'ers with activity from Bajo Neuvo, Serrana Bank,
Tromelin, Crete, illis Island, Chagos, The Seychelles Juan
de Nova and many other rare ones which included ZS1ANT
(Antarctica) J28CC, ZS3HL, LU3ZY (South sandwich) UA1PAL
(Franz Joseph Land] Y9R, 827, V977, ZK2T, XIE to
name but a few. I think most will agree IT ,vAS A STAR
STUDDED NONTH.

Unfortunately there's no rabbit we can pull out of the
hat for October, all we can do is to keep listening,in the
meantime watch the Caribbean area if you need anything from
that direo:tion ,from now. through to the CQW'v'vDX Contest ( phone)
on the 25th and 26th Cctober when there is sure to be stations
operating from the more unusual locations. Also Penrkyn island
in the North Cook group will have a resident ham from about
the 16th of October for six months.

We were hoping for Kamaran island to come up in November,
however, it looks as though the venue will now be Iraq and
I'm sure that many VK7's need that one.

Several amateurs have complained about not receiving a
QC>L from UA1PAL whose manager is U1CS, sc it may be worth
sending a card direct to - U1OSM

                         TOPICAL TOPICS
      I recently heard a VK2 NOVICE calling "C AERONAUTICAL
MOBILE" on 21 mhz. I went back to him and amongst other
things, asked him which type of plane he was flying.
I fully expected him to say perhaps, either a CESSNA,
or a CHEROKEE or similar, but imagine my surprise when he
told me he was the Captain of a new 7l7B en route to
'FRISCO. He also mentioned that his antenna was higher
than mine, being a PROBE at 35,000 feet.
Oh well, you can't win 'em all I guess!

  LETTER TO THE EDITOR
  Dear Sir,
The regular sunday morning broadcast is a source of
information on what is happening in our state in ham radio.
It is a source of great annoyance when important dates and
information is not heard due to band conditions. If the
broadcast is originated on 2 metres this would not happen.
A braodcast is different from normal radio communication.
It is the passing of news and the prime aim of the transfer
of the news should be that, it is received loud and clear.
I am aware that band conditions are in the lap of the gods
but we have the means available to ensure band conditions play
   no part.
On behalf of many people I implore WIA branch broadcast
officers to ensure their handwork gets heard.
        Get it on 2 metres!!!

We have noticed over the past month, a marked and
dramatic increase in deliberate interference or jamming_of
several international broadcasters such as the VOA the BBC
and Deutsche Welle. The main cause of this jamming seems to
be prompted by the unrest within Poland. The majority of •
programmes affected are inthe languages of the Soviet Bloc
and confined to the above three organizations. There was a
relaxation in jamming them since 1973 but has been re-imposed
since the 20th of August. Although the Crisis has subsided
since then, there has been no signs of the jamming ceasing.
Consequently there is a frequency-hopping struggle between
the stations and the jammers. Listen to the BBC's Russian
Service at Oll5 z on 119l45 khz and note how the conflict is
 progressing.
A new Seasonal Broadcasting period commenced on Sunday
September 7th., when stations change their frequencies to
allow for the variation of propagation conditions. This
period will be until the first Sunday in November when the
  next seasonal change will commence.
Another nation in the news is Turkey at the present time.
Within a few days of the Military Coup, the Voice of Turkey
popped up again on 15230 Knz after an absence of several years.
For many years, it was very audible during the early afternoons
on that approximate frequency with programmes in Turkish.
Currently I have observed it at 0634 z with Oriental music
until T/S and I/D at 0700z followed by a news bulletin.
 Signals are very good.
There will be a Workshop in SWLing to be held at this
year's TARC at Penguin. It will be conducted by several
enthusiasts from throughout the State including this
correspondent. The Southern Cross DX Club, which incidentally
has now established a Tasmanian Branch, will also be hoping
to have a display on show. Further details on when the
Seminar/workshop will be held in the November "RM".
The Australian DX Club of P.O. Box 227, Box Hill, VIC
3128, has informed me that their organization has just
published the Australian Utility DXing Guide. This 138 page
book contains apparently a listing of Utilities within
Australia and costs $10.00. This Club also published a
receiver review with comments on most of the models available
currently, at a cost of $5.00.This organization exclusively
centres on Ding as compared to SLing. If you would like
further details, write to the above address enclosing a 50c

AMATEUR ADI_SC_EY_ COLLI_TEE
The last meeting of the Committee was held on 23rd August.
The minutes of the previous meeting was read and confirmed.
Minutes of VK meeting for May and VKh meeting for August
were read. The only thing of note was a report of a 37
minute 2SO without call signs. .
Of a local nature, the following points were brought up
and discussed. No action was thought to be necessary other than
to be reported in these notes.
The call VK7CPA/MM reported operating in the Pacific has
not been issued.
The Northern Branch scrambles raised some points on cross
band operation. Remember that when working crossband you are
still required to listen also on your transmitting
frequency to prevent RM to other stations. Keep the
receiver on the other band turned down or phones to prevent
 re-transmission.
Now that it is no longer necessary to have approved low
power equipment before a Novice licence will be issued, the
requirement to keep within the limit falls back onto the
operator. Recent inspections of stations has shown that the
methods used in attempting to keep within the limit are not
always correct. Have a look at the "ARA. PROJECT" in issue 5
  Vo13 for a PEP indicator.
With the use of mult-channel 2m equipment some operators
are using private frequencies. There has always been a tendency
to be a little more relaxed in operating on other than Repeater
channels, but remember with the increased use of scanners those
   frequencies are not so private.
The next meeting is set for Oct. 4.

     PART 3

OF THE HISTORY OF THE CAPACITOR

Immediately following VON KLEIST'S discovery, the
experiment was repeated by CUNEAS at Leyden, (which gave .the
name "Leyden Jar" to this type of Condenser) and a little
later, English investigators found that an IRON CHAIN
wrapped around the bottle could be subsituted with advantage
and comfort for the human hand; that METAL FILINGS or
MERCURY could replace the water inside the Flask; and it
was even suggested that SH"::::ET LEAD coatings could be used as
     the conductors.
The principal developer of the crude KLEIST condenser,
however, was an American, no other than BENJAMIN FRANKLIN,
who, within 3 years of the discovery had developed TINFOIL
COATINGS pasted on both GLASS JARS and FLAT GLASS PLATES,
(the latter form being known as the "FRANKLIN PANE"),
devised methods of arranging and charging condensers in
series as well as in multiple, and discovered the important
fact that the Electrical charge resided NOT ON THE
CONDUCTORS, but in the DIELECTRIC which seperated them.
Do not miss the next 3 or lu Parts. They will
     certainly make interesting reading.

Take notice that a special general meeting of the Tas. Division
will be held on the 22nd November at 5.15 p.m. at the Penguin
High School during the T.A.R.C. The meeting has been called
at the direction of Council to consider the following motions:

        1. That clause 30 be amended to read:
Associate members shall be entitled to vote at all meetings
except General Meetings but shall not be eligible for election
or appointment to Council except as ex officio members.

        2. That clause 6A be amended to read:
The Council will consist of at least two members from each
of the branches, making a total of not more than six members
all together. Such members shall be appointed on the voting
of the members of the branch from which they have been nominated.

COMMENT: Council has directed that a special meeting be held
because the two motions which are set out above were received
by it in such a form that they were technically invalid and
were out of order. Members will recall that at the 1980
A.G.M. the proposals concerning associate members were the
subject of a motion which was agreed to be held over to this
time. Your thoughts on these motions would be appreciated.
If you do not wish to attend the meeting but wish to exercise
a vote you are entitled to vote by proxy as provided by the
  constition.

                   SOUTHERN BRANCH NOTES.

The first item on the agenda for the month of October is the trip
to the Lagoon of Islands on Sat. the 4th. (see separate advertisement)
This is meant to be a social get-together rather than a radio function,
so come along and bring your family.

The Southern Branch meeting will be held on the Wed.thelst. Oct.
at the S.E.S. headquarters in Melville St., commencing at 8pm. It is
hoped that we will be able to have a guest speaker from an
organisation that all amateurs are closely concerned with, however
details have not yet been finalised.

The next Southern Branch executive meeting will be held at the QTH
of Paul, VK7PA on Thursday, the l6th. of O@tober.

The first of social evenings that have been requested by SB members
is to be held on Friday ,24th. of October, and will probably be held
at the SES headquarters in Melville St., starting at approximately
8pm. (Venue is yet to be confirmed).

The next WAGS function will be the Christmas barbecue, To be held
at the Waterworks Reserve on Sun. December the 7th., Starting time about
midday. There will be a charge of 1.00 per person or family, to cover
cost of bread, salads, etc, but otherwise it is Bring Your Own meat
and drink.

At the latest executive meeting, it appears that overall, the
number of members of the WIA this year has dropped; and members are
requested to put on ther thinking caps and (hopefully) come up with
some good ideas for the recruitment of more members, for the next
meeting. Also discussed were the design of SB QSL cards, as these are
particularly being required by the Devils Award Participants.
Congratulations to all those with new or upgraded calls as a result of
the recent P&T exams, from all members of the executive.
