APRIL 1986
Issued by the Tasmanian Division of
the Wireless Institute of Austraolia
JASMANIAN DIVISION
PRESIDENT’S REPORT 1986
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is with pleasure that I present to you the annual report of the
Wireless Institute of Australia, Tasmanian Division, for 198S5S.
Divisional Council this year had two Councillors each from the South
and North and four from the North-West. Meetings were held in members
homes in Launceston initially followed by a move to the facilities at
the Australian Maritime College. Attendances during the year were
satisfactory with Branch President’s being in attendance at some
meetings. Although the freguency of meetings is still a continuing
preblem and requires attention.
The past year again has seen Council adopting the the role ot
co-ordinator between branches with the main acti» ties being
controlled from within the Branches.
June 11th and 12th saw the 75th Anniversary of the Wireless Institute
of Australia, Tasmanian Amateur Radio Convention held in Hobart,
conducted by the Southern Branch on behalf of the Tasmanian Division.
This event saw the re-enactment of the Historical Spark Transmission
Experiments by 'Pop’ Medhurst of 1901 at Blinking Billy Point on June
11th 1985. The Convention saw 200 plus of the Tasmanian Amateur
population visit the Convention site at the Montrose Bay Yatch Club,
with over 1000 visitors passing through the Convention. This event is
one that all Amateurs can be proud of in the celebration of the 75th
Anniversary of the Wireless Institute of Australia, the Oldest
Amateur MNadio Society in the World.
8RM under the editorship of John Rogers continues in publication but
still requires the support of all the Branches for articles and items
of news, distribution presently still via Branch meetings. Sunday
morning broadcasts have been brought to you each week by a few
dedicated amateurs, who originate and relay onto frequencies for all
classes of licencees to listen statewide, however not without some
difficulties during the year. This resulted in a Broadcast
Co-ordinatior Meeting being held in Launceston on 15th February 1986
with excellent attendance from all Branches. The meeting was highly
successful and the results are are contained in a sepd@rate report.
WICEN was again active during the year participating in Tasmania
Police and State Emergency Services exercise conducted in 1985. This
being highly successful in demonstrating the capabilities and
usefullnes of the Amateur Radio Service.
The Tasmanian Devil Award has
continued in popularity and is well
sought after. The Q@SL Bureau continues a8t a similar rate to last year
in the number aof cards being handled, indicating present band
conditions.
Divisional finances during the year have shown a decrease, brought
about by increased expenditure during the year, this being detailed
in the Treasurers repert. This resulted in an increase of one dollar
to all subscripticn rates. Membership during the year has also
increased.
Finally, to all elected and ex-officio members of Council, I thankyou
for your support and co-operation during the past year.
Peter

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
Received from Jim Joyce, VK3YJ, correspondent to "73" mag,
- thanks for your complimentary remarks, Jim, and we hope
that super mike (your special award from "73") is giving
you great satisfaction,
Also a letter from Tony Clayton, N.W. Branch Secretary, -
your congratulations are much appreciated by the hard-
working staff here. The delivery service to Sulphur
Creek should be working now, but of course, if the "A,R."
insert system is succesful, Max won't have to go "down to
the depot" any more!
William Perleberg has also sent us a most picturesque
letter enclosing broadcast schedules for Spanish over-
seas services and NHK, Radio Japan. The Australian sections
are given below.

Mccquorie Island where he will stay for the winter and will
operate as VK@SJ. He will toke his H.F. gear with the TONO
for RTTY aond 2m. gear for the Robot Satellite.
A keen group of VK3'rs have pooled in and given Sojo on loan
for the year: a callsign keyer for the 2m. and ém. beacon,
a ém, tronsceiver, a 6ém., and o 2m, linear, ém. and 2m. Yagi's
ond power supplies. So, soys Sojo, keep an ear out on the 6m,
and 2m. bonds for the beoacon. The exact frequencies will be
notified when the equipment is installed and minimum interference
with scientific equipment is determined.
If you are interested, keep also an ear out on his regular

DIVISIONAL BROADCASTS
This is VK7 GH celling. As you may now be aware, I've
taken on the task of Divisional Broadcast Officer for 1986.
I'm looking forward to the challenge and hoping to get the
support of all members in putting to air the Divisional weekly
broadcasts. To this end your support is required in the form
of broadcast material, and operational support both in
origineting and relaying broadcasts. If you can assist in
any capacity, please advise me or your local Branch broadcast
officer immediately, these being:
North VK7 AV Bill
North West VK7 ZFH Frank
South VK7 GH Arthur
News gathering is presently underteken on a regional
basis by the local broadcast officers, collated and for-
warded to the duty originator by Friday for broadcasting on
the Sunday. Stop press items are acceptable but if you have
an item, get it in early and save the originator of the day
the panic of a last minute re-organisation to his broadcast
schedule,
Enough of the boring logistics, what can the broadcast
officer do to help the smooth running of the broadcast. A
few early thoughts are:
(1) Early issue of rosters of originators and relays
(2) Oversee quality of technical production of the
broadcast and ensure adequate facilities are
available to achieve this.
(3) Encourage positive and negative feedback on
the broadcast. ‘
(4) Promote the Divisional image.
BUT WHAT CAN'T HE DO?°?
(1) Read your minds.
(2) Generate the news.
So here's looking forward to your information and support
73's for the time being and good listening.

The Editor Regrets...... .
It's not often we make mistakes in spelling names, but to
make two errors in the same name is going a bit too far.
We therefore apologise to the new Southern Branch Secretary,
Kevan Davies - whose REAL name is KEVEN DAVIS! Now, when
corresponding with him, we should all get it right!!.
ATV _EXPERIMENTS IN HOBART.
Towards the end of March, some 625-line ATV signals were
experimentally transmitted in the Fern Tree area of Hobart,
by VK7ZALL and VK7ZAR. The actual spot was just opposite to
where the Sphinx Hotel used to be. The tests were intended to
ascertain whether the antenna - a 10-element Yagi - had a
sufficiently broad lobe to cover a reasonable area.
By the time this paragraph is published, the results of those
tests will have been evaluated and, if successful, will be
followed by full tests on the 27th., April from 14.00 hrs.
local time (EST). The main frequency of transmission on
April 27th. will be 426.25MHz, though a second frequency may
be made available on 444,25MHz. To receive the test signals,
some owners of older TV receivers may find they can tune down
to 426.25, but otherwise, an ATV converter will be necessary.
A 2m. handheld at the transmitter point will be used for
reports on 146.45MHz.
"QRM" will print further information when experiment results
come 1in.

Totgls of cords for the last three years:

Cards received 10,455 11,015 16, 300
Cords sent 7,096 7,672 11,696
17,551 18,687 27,996
The peak year was 1980, with o total of 49,062 caords.
In and out cards ore infloted this year by 7-800 by cards
received from overseas bureaux for VK/5A, the special
anniversary call, and these had to be sent on to VK3,
The deficiency for the year has been kept down to $30.13,
although no packet, with a minor exception, now pays for
itself unless it contains 30 cepds. A noticeable number
of overseas bureoux now send cords ot longer intervals.
Only two lots have been received during the year from
both U.S.A. ond U.S.S.R.

THE "BAND DOMINATOR"™ HF/VHF REGENERATIVE RECEIVER.
Constructional Notes.
This receiver is designed to use non-critical ports -
the type thot ore found in most junk boxes! The R.F. stoge
(6CB6) is the only section where problems moy occur,
olthough I have made up two examples with no major problems,.
If you have trouble with making the regeneration work, or
stabilising to a hiss, then change the resistors in the
screen regen supply (i.e. the 50K pot or the 10K fixed)
The oudio stage is easy.as any configuration can be used,
depending on valves available, or, for heretics and non-
believers, those little "three~legged fuses" con be used here!
For those of you out there who have not tried regenerative
receivers, some practice is needed in tuning the receivers,
gs they can screech and roar as tuning across the bands is done,
ond in the unstable stote, they also act as transmitting
oscillotors (an interesting experimental basis on V.H.F.)
So, keep it in the "hiss" region and keep the neighbours
of
f your back!

BROADCAST ARRANGEMENTS
Following endorsement of the Broadcast Committee's report by the
Divisional AGM on 15.3.86, we can now look forward to further
enhancement of Divisional Broadcast arrangements.
The basic thrust of the committee's recommendations is to provide
for a statewide Divisional roster for broadcast purposes and to
dispense with the previous "Branch by month" arrangements.
There will also be a new time for Broadcasts - 9.a.m. local time
Sunday in lieu of the present 9.30 a.m. This will commence from
the first Sunday in May (subject to administrative arrangements
being okayed). So, get set for the earlier time.

LOW MASS REGULATED DC
POWER SUPPLIES
In the PAL-series, KIKUSUI introduces a new era in power supplies by
combining linear and switching technologies to preduce a low mass and
high quality power supply
4IGH QUALITY
The PAL-series is not ‘just’ a veriable (O to rated output) switching supply.
KIKUSU! have used a switching and series requlator that combine to provide
a high performance and highly efficient supply. As these specifications
show:
® 50u sec transient response (typical)
o 50 ppm/°C constant voltage (typical)
e Lower output impedance in constant voltage mode
® Accurate and stable constant current mode. PAL SERIES
MODEL VOLTAGE CURRENT MASS
LOW MASS PAL-10-100P 0-10v 0-100A 26kg
KIKUSUI has revolutionized the common concept that lab supplies are PAL-16-20 0-16 0-20 8.5kg
heavy. By using a new technique, the heavy power transformer and choke PAL-16-40 0-16 0-40 11.5kg
coil are replaced by much lighter switching circuits. This results in a 50% PAL-16-60 0-16 0-60 21kg
reduction in mass aver the older style linear supply. PAL-20-50 0-20 0-50 21kg
PAL-35-10 0-35 0-10 8.5kg
LOW NOISE PAL-35-20 0-35 0-20 11.5kg
The extraordinary low noise characteristics achieved by KIKUSUI also allow PAL-35-30 0-35 0-30 21kg
the PAL series to be used in demanding analog applications — even audio. Insert X702 on InformationFeedbackCard
