Here we are with the first issue for the fourth year and a
very sorivy start it is, it is a week late and only half the
size of what we'vs got used to. p——
There are no tachnical srticles this month for a simple f7<,<.
reason, we haven't any ¢ Some of you may say that this is
due to the receni increase in size, however this is not the
case as the extra material was always copied from other
publications.
1f you people prefer Rt to consist of meeting reports and
latest gossip only, its fine with me, it certainly is easier
and guicker to produce L pages of news with an occasional
) extra page of Oscar predictions than the type of thing we
L nave been doing since August.
are you going to stand by and let this happen to YOUR
cwsletter or arc you golng to help maintain the standard
welve becongc azcustomed to and write an article ? if so
lets have it soon.

North West notes by Max VA7MX.
Having been in a lot of hot water in recent times I propose to
work off some '"steam" this issue.
when it comes to work and hobbies we all have a free choice.
One mey join the w.I.A. and if you choose to do so go to meetings
On the other hand there is no compulsion.
Some of us, in all sincerity take active part, hold office, and
some serve in this way for long periods.
iwhat would happen if nobody bothered, you can work that one out,
however its up to the individual. But I, for one am fed up with
knockers who are full of complaints, often gbout happenings at
meetings when they were not even in attendance, so in future I
will welcome complaints and criticism scross the meeting table
only. Anybody who has 1ideas for the benefit of the branch and
will back them up in a practical way will be very welcome at
the election of cffice bearers. If elected, it will mean some
inconvenience, putting the hand in the pocket occasionally,
burning up petrol and miles and accepting criticism, and after
all that I guess I will get plenty.
Now to current happenings. Our monthly meeting saw the old
faithfuls in attendence. It was a good meeting and concluded
with a lecture on solid state by Graham 72AQ, we certainly need
more of that.
The event of the month was the Port Sorell mini hamfest the
joint North-North wWest affair. From remarks overheard it was a
successfull affair for all including yl's, xyl's and harmonics,
and there were lots of delightful children with an enormous
capacity for cordial. The North was very well distributed through
the crowd but the North West turn up was disappointing.
A rough check shows that about 6 out of a possible 23 turned up.
We certainly saw some new ideas. Some rock climbing gear attached
to a tree was tried out by many of the boys and 1t could be the
start of something. An egg throwing contest caused a lot of fun
and the winners were VK7HE and XYL who caught an raw egg over
an incredible distance.
Rigs on 2 and 6 metres and VK74X's new HF rig were all operational
and created some interest. A raffle was won by VK7ZWW and the
frequency guessing competition by VK7MX.
Harold VK7MZ snd XYL had quite a hike when the car made trouble
someways out of Port Sorell. However Frank VK7ZFR went out with
a towline and things came good.
Then came the cricket match, the North West won by clever
tactics which included throwing the ball away when it came near
non batting members. The score was a matter of conjecture but
estimates ranged from 38 to 83 runs. The mainstay of the North,
VK7RR who finally retired after being out 3 or 4 times, put up
a fine knock. However, the North run out of time and sportsman-
like gave the match away. It was a hilarious affair really and
thoroughly enjoied by players and spectators alike.
Our thanks go to all who contributed including VK7LH for the
loan of his tent. The weather was kind, we were very lucky and
watched a thunderstorm go round east of us.
We hope to see a full house at our next meeting.

Treasurersreport. Kevin VK7ZaH
This year has been very successful as can be seen from the
balance sheet, with a turnover of $5713.00 and a profit of
$8168.24. As the amount of debitors is quite high an explanation
would be apprecpiate, the bulk of this amount is $415.00 paid
to the VK3 division for xtals, these xtals have now been supplied
The only other large amount owing is $159.96 by the Southern
branch for an IGL transceiver, the balance of debitors are for
various small amounts. ‘
On the other side of the ledger, the $188.54 is mainly monies
received for the undelivered xtals.
The $1u0.00 received for QRM came from our advertisers and the
North vwest branch.
As can be seen $26,01 was received for insurance commission, this
is easy money and members are reminded that we benefit if you
purchase your insurance from Federation Insurance and mention
you are a member of the w.Il.A. Northern brznch.
In concluding I would like to thank the members for their
patronage of the equipment store over the past year and hope
that they will buy even more goods in the next year.
I would like to thank John 7JdV for his help during the year
and a vote of thanks must go to Carl wWaldon who audits our
books every year.

This time of the year can provide exotic DX on 6m so don't
forget to tune the band occasionzlly.
The 27ihz band is a good indicator of a possible opening.
On the 23rd, 11 metres was open to W and other countries
in the Northern Hemisphere, at the same time weak signals
plus some CW were heard by Kevin 7ZAH on 6m, but no call
signs deciphered.
