News
Issued by the Tasmanian Division of
the Wireless Institute of Australia
Radiotorial (omument
This month we try a new system for distributing "QRM" which
we hope will have the advantoge that every member of the W.I.A.
will receive his copy as an insert to "Amateur Radio" each
month, Other interested subscribers would still need to have
individ ual copies sent by post on request, but it should solve
many of our earlier problems for members who miss meetings of
the Branches,
There is, however, at least one disadvantage, which is that
copy for "QRM" must reach the Editor so that typing,
printing, collating and stapling can be completed for posting
to "A.R." one week before "A,R." publication date. Information,
therefore, cannot be quite as up to date as previously. We
shall have to accept that news will be a minimum of ten days
old when we read it, and if copy submitted has a time factor
involved (e.g. satellite news, meeting dates, WICEN exercises
or contest information), then this new delay must be taken into
account.
Your Editor is still anxious to design "QRM" around a regular
page sequence, We could, for instance, have a VHF Page, an
ALARA Page, a Monthly Project Page, a Hints and Tips Column
and a Personal Snippets Page. And here's a personal snippet
to be going on with: 7JK and 7K.J were having a chat on 2m on
the evening of the 18th February when who should pop up but
VK7JH testing his newly-built DSE 144MHz rig. Jim was worried
that his frequency meter wasn't quite accurate, but he needn't
have been concerned - his signal was right on target. So, as
Greg said, "Welcome to VHF, Jim"., Now there must be others who
are embarking on new paths, so let's hear about them, too.

HAMMING IT UP IN ZL,
(Contributed by Dave VK7DS)
Having won a Counties Award with 43 counties, we planned to
go and have another close look around the Bay of Plenty, East
Coast, North Island.
On 25th. November 1985, there was a good contact with ZLI1BYB,
Lloyd, in Hamilton. When told we would be there on January 7th.,
he insisted we call in for an eyeball and a cuppa. Sure enough,
he piloted us to a most desirable QTH. In spite of having undergone
some rather drastic surgery, he was a very active 86 years old,
and had recently rebuilt and re-papered the entire interior of
the house. As expected, the "shack" was immaculate, as was
the antenna farm. He proudly displaysa beaten copper callsign
panel, and promised to send me one bearing my call,
After a phone call to another contact, Bert ZL1VI invited us to
call in on him at Waihi Beach. He is a very keen rock hound,
and when he needs more radio gear, he crushes some more gold-
bearing quartz - which is common in that area. In fact, most
of the Coromandel Peninsula seems to be built of gold and gem
stones. Bert gave me a load to bring home!
When at Gisborne, we traced a house belonging to a cubical quad,
but the owner, a Rev., was out. So was the owner of the next
one I investigated. A neighbour, however, tracked down the ham,
who then invited me to the radio club meeting by phone. Since
the meeting was on at the time, I went round and offered the
greetings of the W.I.A. "Oh, yes, Australia", says one type,
"that's where they bowl underarm!" Australia was just out for
the grand total of 70, hut they welcomed me to the planning of
the Field Day for 8th and 9th February. As an overseas contact
would give them a multiplication factor, I promised to try
and help, but during the contest, didn't hea a peep! Would
you believe 1it?? Ed, ZL2VI took me home to supper. The
neighbours wouldn't let him install his tower from his previous
residence, but the new lower one is much sturdier and more
manageable single-handed.
They are a great bunch, those Kiwis, AND they have to pass the
Morse test at 12 w.p.m.
VK7DS, Dave.

THE BAUDOT CODE.
How did the Baudot Code get its name, you may well ask. Well, it's
a very interesting story, and it goes like this:
Jean-Maurice-Emile Baudot was born in Magneaux, France in 1845,
He became an engineer who, at the age of thirty, in 1874, received
o paotent on a telegraph code that supplanted Morse as the most
commonly used telegraph alphabet of the twentieth century.
In the Baudot Code, each letter is represented by a five unit
combination of current-on, current-off signals. By this method,
thirty-two permutations were provided, sufficient for the Roman
alphabet, punctuation signs, and the control of the machine functions.
In 1894, he invented a distributor system for simultaneous
transmission of several messages on the same circuit, or channel,
of high-speed telegraphy. Baudot called this patent "multiplex”.
Modern versions of the Baudot Code use groups of seven or eight
on-off signals, allowing the use of a larger alphabet system.
It seems beyond belief that the code used to communicate this
interesting story was invented and patented by a Frenchman some
110 years ago. Well done, Baudot.

SCOUTING ROUND CAMPANIA,
We are reliably informed that on 16th. March 1986, the
1st, Campania Scout Troop will start its operations. The Scout
Leader will be none other than our fellow amateur Ian VK7BG.
Guess what the Troop's main activity will be? Of course: it
won't be long before they have their own Callsign. So, fellows,
give an ear to the lst. Campofio enthusiasts, and good luck to
Ian in this new venture,
LAND FORCES AMATEUR RADIO GROUP.
Following a series of "on air" discussions, the Land Forces
Amateur Radio Group became a reality on 29th. January 1986,
when 16 licensed amateur operators met on 80 metres and
decided to form the group, adopt a constitution, elect office
bearers and committee. To be eligible for membership, it is
" necessary to be a licensed amateur and to have serbed in an army.
"Army" is defined as an organised force armed for fighting on
land. There are no restrictions on the time of service or the
nationality of the army or the area in which the service took
place. Service in time of peace as well as in war are both
acceptable, Application Forms for membership will be available
in the near future. The main objects are to promote the
fellowship which was engendered during Army service and to rpovid
provide for members the privileges and benefits usually flowing
from the association of people with common interests.
The following were elected: VKINCO, John (What an appropriate
callsign! - Ed.) as PRESIDENT; VK3CQP as VICE-PRESIDENT;
The SECRETARY is VK2AKP, Sam; TREASURER is VK3DOV, Murray; and
COMMITTEE members are VK/NBF, Bob, VK7AV, Bill and VK2NPJ, Pete.
/\ny enquiries may be directed to any of the above, and anyone
interested is invited to join the regular Wednesday night het
on 3.595 MHz at 09.30 UTC.
At last the Army has a voice to respond to the Navy and Air
Force groups, and it is proposed that members volunteer to act
as instructors to Dad's Army.
VK7NBF, Bob.

LOW MASS REGULATED DC
POWER SUPPLIES
In the PAL-series, KIKUSUI introduces a new era in power supplies by
combining linear and switching technologies to produce a low mass and
tigh quality power supply.
HIGH QUALITY
The PAL-series is not ‘just’ a variable (O to rated output) switching supply.
KIKUSUI have used a switching and series regulator that combine to provide
a high performance and highly efficient supply. As these specifications
. show:
® 50 sec transient response (typical)
o 50 ppm/°C constant voltage (typical)
® Lower output impedance in constant voltage mode
® Accurate and stable constant current mode. PAL SERIES
LOW MASS MODEL VOLTAGE CURRENT MASS
o ) PAL-10-100P o-10v 0-100A 26kg
KIKUSUI has revolutionized the common concept that lab supplies are PAL-16-20 0-16 0-20 8.5kg
heavy. By using a new technique, the heavy power transformer and choke PAL-16-40 0-16 0-40 11.5kg
coil are replaced by much lighter switching circuits. This results in a 50% PAL-16-60 0-16 0-60 21kg
reduction in mass over the older style linear supply. PAL-20-50 0-20 0-50 21kg
PAL-35-10 0-35 0-10 8.5kg
LOW NOISE PAL-35-20 0-35 0-20 11.5kg
The extraordinary low noise characteristics achieved by KIKUSUI also allow PAL-35-30 0-35 0-30 21kg
the PAL series to be used in demanding analog applications — even audio. Insert X702 on Information Feedback Card
