EDITORIAL There are many facets of Amateur Radio to enjoy; there is
the sport of the hunt for countries, awards, and SL,s, tne experimenting
with equipment and ideas, out Ossie to most operators is the contact with
people; the ability to make new friends in a way and with an ease denied
to most. There are not many people in any town who would have the courage
to stand on the footpath and call CQ to passers Dy, There would always
De the danger of strong men in white coats coming to put you somewhere·
safe o
In Tasmania the small Amateur Radio community rarely meets in a Dody,
We keep in touch jhrough the medium of QRM and the broadcast, the VK7
Sunday night net and the_daily sewing circle,,but apart from the
Annual Convention most of us never meet face to face
What I want to suggest is that we meet in the coming spring for a

NORTH WEST BRANCH N0TES.
The usual monthly meeting was held on Tues May 13 th, when once again,
we had a very good attendance ith the minutes of the last meeting read
Correspondence was delt with. The chiarman had on display a 1.5 Amp
Solar Panel donated y Jim VK7N0W, to be used at the new ATV Repeater
and F.M. Repeater site
The subjects of Wicen and S..S. were discussed at lenght and it was
suggested that te N.'. Branch align itself with S.E.S. It was resolved
that the chairman contact Mr Bevis Dutton of 3.E.S.- to visit a N.W.
meeting, to give a lecture and general discussion or activities
Membership applications were received from the following-:
Mr Neville Walcom VK7NJW Luina
Mr Geoffrey Green VK7NGG Montello.
T..ARC 80. Various members are working or. this project, and it could well
be that we may have a visit by Australia,s "Grand old man" of Radio.
More on that later.
During General busness Brian VK7NBH, comlained of a strong continuous
carrier around 21175 and 21.185. ( Tnis has been going on for months
at the writers TH, and reaches 20 over 9). At the conclusion of
general business, Gregg VK7ZZZ gave a most interesting illustrated
lecture or. " Switch Modes" in power supplies ( Transistorized).
The meeting closed with supper

Jim VK7N0W.
Included in the North West Branch Notes was a foot note by Jim VK7NOW
on the quantity of notes and the method of printing of RM. These
comments are printed as a letter to the editor ED.
"It is my considered opinion, that "QRM" should be produced by a
commercial enterprise. I think most of us would not mind paying around
$1.50 or so each month for a "professional Publication". All copy could
be checked over by the Editor ( Who is doing an excellent job ), and
then forward for publication. What do other members think?."
73 Jim Davis VK7N0W.
General Topics.
On June 15 th, Graham ZL2AGU will be arriving in VK7 to spend

special meeting at our Headquarters on June 17 th and has kindly agreed
to give a lecture on Power Distribution, etc in ZL, and to bring us up to
date with Radio in New Zealand. WE would like to see a big turn-up and
a welcome is extented to anyone who· would like to attend. If possible,
- would you please bring a plate for supper.

Edison's Museum
It is interesting to note that many of the original bottles
of chemicals used by the famous ThosoAoEdison and displayed in his
orienal lab in New Jersey, US.A., have now reached a dangerous state,
Some of the bottles are now giving off poisonous vapors, so the museum
has now been closed to the publicv It is feared some of the bottles
will explode, thus releasing the vapours- which would cause disastrous
results Experts are now engaged in removing the bottles and destroying
them. This is a great pity, because these bottles had labels on them in
Edison's own handwritingo This info was given to me by a W2 in New York.
Next Month I will write a short article on the "Marconi - Telsa" affair
Its very interesting.

Editor's Noteo
We all probably take for granted the arrival of QRM each month,
but I wonder who helps to pay for its production. Yes, I know you and
I pay a certain amount from our subs, Council helps out to, but there
are other people who help to finance this publication? they are of.
course the "Advertisers" Without these people you and I would be
paying a lot more or you may not even have a QRM Bulletino
So next time you need some gear -Don't forget our Advertisers -

around the bands there may be something of interest

Treasurer'seportfor 1979
The apparent operating loss of $443.67 was brought about by
a number of reasons. ith the change in the method in new
subscription handling we no longer hold pro-rata from one year
to the next. This amounted to t367.50 for the start of the year.
Due to the timing of the renewal of the Personal Insurance
policy it has already been paid for 1980.The amount wes $300.
he losses for 2RM for 1978 came out of year 1979 monies and
the final contribution to W\R.C also helped to reduce our balance.
This balance is all our's and with the rise in Divisional
portion of subscriptions ,to meet increased QRM expenses, I
believe I leave this position with an adequate budget for the
rest of the year.

part of the meeting was kept to just over i houro There was plenty of
time to chat and drink coffee and then at 9 o'clock we had our guest
speaker Mr Neville Brown from the Christian Radio Station 7HFC FM.
Neville told us of the planning and hard work that went into this
project, along with some interesting details about technical aspects
and belive it or not they had VSWR problems. Don't forget the next meeting
on the l4 th of June, hope you can make it

Amateur Radio Magazine
At the recent Federal Convention time was spent discussing the future
problems of "A.R." It was pointed out that advertising revenue must be maintained
and its attractiveness to readers( and hence advertisers) must be improved, Other
states which presently include inserts are to pay for their material to be
included in the pages of "A.R." and they are to actively pursue local advertising.
As in Tas we are committed to sponsor QRM as our contact with our members
we cannot support "A.R." in this way however we are surely duty bound to assist
where possible.
There may be articles we publish that would be better in A.R. (e.g. good
technical articles). There also would be local happenings which should be
propagated Australia wide. Perhaps there are advertisers (Amateur suppliers or
otherwise) that we can channel to A.R.
Photos are particularly welcome.
Peter Dowde, VK 7NPR is Our "A.R." representative - give him assistance.
Money for Education
Around l8 months ago Dick Smith gave a donation of $3500 to the WIA to use
for Educational purposes. The WIA initially decided to use this to produce a series
of videotapes of topics to suit would-be-amateurs, novices and more advanced
persons. This idea has not eventuated so the money will now be divided equally
between all Divisions.
Problem
What can VK7 do with $500 for education. One suggestion is a videotape
(or slides/tape) on say, interference. Perhaps books, aids etc for education
groups. Of course most of our education groups are associated with colleges,
schools so have A/V gear available. Any suggestions??
Federal Convention
Detailed discussions will be provided elsewhere however some items of
interest were:
FE will continue to press for 3rd party rights and will examine the demand
for phone patching. It was resolved that the 10,18 and 24 MHZ bands should be
for full calls all modes. No common band is needed for novice,Z and full calls.
The present advisory committee structure should be retained and that the require-
ment for listing equipment on station licences should be dispensed with.
Of course the results of WARC received much attention and Amateur Radios
success was obviously due to the effective preparation we made.

Scene and Heard By "Earwig" o
Conditions over the past month have been fair to good, with
occasional propagational disturbances. Some interesting stations
were observed, particularly after the abortive U,So attempt to free
the hostages in Teheran on May 25 th. Many of the major broadcasting
stations pre-empted some of there programmes to bring reactions of
the crisis as it unfolded. I copied an unidentified CW station on April
the 26 th , on 18.300 Mhz with a very badly worded text in English
at 0730 Z2 with the Iranian version of the crisis. I suspect it was from
Iran, but Idon't know if it was the Government Information Office or
whatever else in that nationjbut the English was very poor, and I have
not observed it since" The reaction from Radio Teheran was predictable,
Military music, crowds chanting, etc. Teheran is observed on 15.084 Mhz
at around 033 Z daily in Farsi, the official language in Iran.
Radio Vila, YB, the New Hebrides Broadcasting Service, has been
heard on 30945 Mhz at0725 z. The programme was in French and carried
some Island rnusico The signal was fair. The Canadian Time Station,
CHU, has been logged recently on 1l.670 Mnz. This is operated by the
National Research Council in Ottawa, and has an I.D. in French,
English alternating every minutej and transmitting coded pulses between
30-40 second part of the minuteo Listen for it at about 0828 Z ,
it was 54lu3 on the Sinpo Scale.
Now for some Medium ave loggings over the past Neek. Singapore Radio
9VG, has been heard with traffic on 500 Khz at 131 , it was poor to
fair in signal strenght. This is a very good indicator as a DX condition
from Asia on the M.F. band. Radio Noumea, New Caledonia, can be heard
in the evenings at about 1000 Z at fair to reasomable strengnt. The
frequency of 666 Khz is clear, as there are no stations in Australasia
utilizing this wavelengnt. The transmitter is rated at 20 KW, and the
program in french is also carried on 7.170 Mnz Conditions on 160 Meters
have also been good. W&JI has been heard calling C at 1015 Z 0n 1605
Khz CWo Aleo Japanese fishing trawlers have been monitored on 1640 Khz
and almost certainly are pirates" Listen at 1115 Z on USB.
A number of Korean stations are being heard lately. The Korean
Broadcasting System ir Seoul (South) is heard in English at 0750 Z
with programmes for Europe on 15570 Nhz. At 0930 Z, an Indonesian
language programme is aired on 9964 Mhz at very good strenght Radio
Ptongyang, ( North ) is heard on SL420 Mhnz at 0940 Z with a French
language broadcast" Its Home Service has been noted at 1020 Z on
2850 Mhz in. Korean
Jerusalem has been noted from time to time on 25.605 Mhz witn
programmes in Hebrew It has a fair to poor signal strenght when noted
at 1030 Z and 0620 Z Radio Tirana, Albania was heard on the unusal
frequency of 16.23 Mhz at 0530 Z with programmes in Chinese. Also or
1l4320 as well at the same time It was also heard at 1300 Z with the
same programme.

VHF notes by Joe VK7JG
Very little has happened since last month, the last entry in my
log ook being KH6EQI beacon on 16/4/80.
Tony VK7TW reported hearing KG6DX on 50.0 Mnz however when
Tony called him on 28Mhz and had him shift up to 52.0 MEz
signals could not be heard, so once again we need 50.0 MHZ
to make those DX contacts.
During the month ZL TV has been watchable but no contact has
oeen made. On one occasion ZL4 TV was watchable but unfortunately
the only amateur we could contact was ZLIMO, the opening did
not extend to his area and no contact was made.
Dont forget the mid winter DX openings tney could produce some
interesting contacts. Most of the above refers to Six meters
however I have not been active on Two and have no information
on activity in this area, however there have been several new
call signs active on repeater 8 during the past week.
By the time you read this Amsat Oscar 9 should be in orbit
this will provide VHF contacts better than those possible
on many HF bands. More information will be published on this
satellite next montn.
