Northern Branch Notes by Mac VK7CCC.
I must apologize for the absence of last months
notes, they were delivered to VK7JV too late for printing.
However to bring you up to date:
*®
The Branch stand at the recent JayCees exhibition
met with lots of success as far as numbers of interested
people were concerned, we are not sure how many might be
potential amateurs. Thanks to everyone who assisted,
especially Roger Wooley, Frank VK7ZFR and Mike VK7ZWW.
In retrospect there is a real need to have prepared for
anytime a permanent display including, posters, booklets
on amateur radio and antenna systems. If you have any
thoughts on this matter pass them on to any member of the
executive.
Our second monthly meeting was held at the new
club rooms in Bourke Street on the 9th September. Among
several items discussed was a report by the clubrooms
committee. This covered all areas such as, use of the
rooms, requirements, immidiate start and long term. It is
our hope that these club rooms will lead to more group
activity by individuals, to do this we need the right
atmosphere which involves a little work for everyone.
The equipment room has been cleaned out and
steps taken to make the door absolutely secure. It will
be necessary to run new wiring from the mains and to
install power points. We need an electrical tradesman
with a contracting license, if anyone fits the bill !!
We need shelving and benches or the wood for
same, if you have any surplus. If you can assist in any
way contact us.
Tony VK7TP and myself are looking after the
library, we already have quite a few magazines and books.
If you wish to donate to the system Tony and I will pick
them up, the same goes for any surplus equipment you have.
All I have done so far is scrounge, we do in
fact have about $2400 in clubroom funds for which a very
big thanks must go to John VK7JV, This will be required
for new seating, heating and other items we can not make
or beg. A host of other items are covered in the report,
if you were not at the meeting and would like a copy, ask!
Peter VK7PD our treasurer has had to stand down
due to pressures of other work and as once again there
were no volunteers Tony VK7TP was "talked into'"the job.
I might add that Peter was '"carrying" the job because of
lack of volunteers at an earlier election. The only time
our meetings are quiet is when volunteers are required
and everyone looks at one another. Thank you Peter for
your assistance in the past and thank you Tony for taking
over the task.
The treasurers report up to and including 5/9/'77.
Sales $582.36
Purchases $345.55
Expenses $ 74.50
Balance $978.19

MEETINGS: The next meeting on October 1l4th will include
an equipment display. If you have the latest gear, bring it
along. Whatever you have made, large or small bring it along
and show it to us. Peter how about bringing your synthesiser
and Daniel your 1296 gear, even an electronic burglar alarm
for the club if someone feels inclined.
December 10th BAR-B-QUE (Pig Roast) at the paddock of
VK7CCC in Evandale, if the pig burns blame Mike VK7ZWW he is
supplying the spit and doing the cooking. There will also be
an equipment auction (out of earshot of YL/XYL) gear can be
delivered to executive members from now on and it will be
stowed safely. We will need some trestles/tables if anyone
has any we can borrow.
You will notice in this months A.R. an article
dealing with an item in which amateur radio was used to assist
someone else, if you hear of any similar news items let us know,
if it is really news worthy let the division know.
North West Branch notes by Wayne Gibson.
A moderately well attended meeting was held on
September 13th. Noticably absent were some members from the
Devonport area due to sickness. One new face at the meeting
was that of Martin Fox VK7MM, he is now working on the North
West coast and hopefully will soon be on air.
The formal business transacted was very limited,
reports from office bearers were not available due to illness.
A letter was received reminding us of the up
coming Jamboree on the air and requesting our aid to participate
in this Scouting event. Any member that wishes to help should
contact Kirby VK7ZKC.
The rest of the meeting was devoted to the
discussion of arrangements for the TASMANIAN AMATEUR RADIO
CONVENTION 1977. There were plenty of ideas floating about
and it appears that the convention will be a memorable one,
as was 1974.
Local Doings; Terry VK7TT has just returned from VK9 land
(island). He reports that Norfolk Island has a surprisingly
large amateur population. The two he met were John Anderson
VKOJA and Ray Hoare VKOSRH.
That's about it, 73 Wayne
FOR SALE; Nikkon F, SLR camera $120. Miopta Optomus
enlarger 2%" and 35mm $120.
WANTED; any old P.A. amplifiers. Mike VK7ZWW

WANTED:; for the new clubrooms, materials to construct shelving
for equipment.

DX notes by Col Wright VK7LZ.
Not much in the way of news this month due to being
away part of the time, however for those interested in working
Kermadec Island here is the latest news direct from Marion the
leader of the DXpedition, all systems are go and the operation
could commence on the 19th of October, all bands 1.8 to 28 MHz
SSB and CW, the call-sign will be ZL1AA/K.
The American expedition to Kingman Reef (KP6BD) made
11 000 QSO's in three days, as Kermadec is almost as rare from
the DXCC angle, you may have to work hard to get this one.
QSL info will be advised as soon as it comes to hand.
There have been several reports that a station signing
S88TH is operating from the Iranskei around 14.195/14.215 MHz
SSB however nothing has been heard of it here. 8 licenses have
been issued in Iranskei since it became a Republic however to
date it has not been accepted for DXCC.
Cards from IJ7EX, Pietro Island, should be getting
into the mail by now according to I1BGJ one of the DXpedition
members.
For those interested in 1.8 MHz now is the time to
start tuning the band, to date here JA's, KH6, and W's have
been heard on CW however you'll need more luck or a better
aerial than I have to get a QSO.
As we are now getting into the DX season, just a re-
minder that the following contests could yield some good DX.
October 8/9th VK/ZL DX CW contest
15/16th RSGB 7MHz phone contest
29/30th CQ WW DX phone contest
November 5/6th RSGB 7MHz CW contest
3.5MHz is worth keeping in mind. Lionel VK7HL advises that VE's
have been calling VK's on SSB and listening in our band, also
YJ8KC, ZK1DR and 3D2WR have all been logged here between 09002
and 1000Z at good strengths on SSB below 3.7MHz.
7MHz 1is also improving, between the hours of 0630 and 08002
some good DX can be heard both on SSB and CW. Stations heard
here include, on CW, DJ's, EA's, F, FOBEX, GIBJEX, GW3AX,
GW30AY, JA's, KH6, OH, ON6ZJ, SPY9AAJ, VP2DD and on SSB, DJ6GEA,
EA30AC, EA8DI, G's, TI2CF, OE9QAHI, XE1UF, 3D2ER and 9Y4NP.
14MHz still the most prolific producer of DX, listening here
has been confined to between the hours of 0400 to 08007, all
continents have been heard, some of the rarer stations listed
were, EA6BH, FC9OUC, FM7WS, GW4BLE, HIS8JAF, HK@CLS, HC2WF,
KAlS Marcus Island, IS@MVE, JY3ZH, JY9DI, KP4CLB, KC4AAA,
SV1DH, TI2ADB, UK2GKW, VP2MH, ZE4JS, ZK1DR, 5B4EU, B5Z4RG,
8P6FU, 9H1EY, also the usual run of F's, G's, I's, U's, YV's
etc., all on SSB.
21MHz as in previous months I fade out about here, occasional
listening has only produced hundreds of JA's also UA{'s, W,
KC6DA and YJ8KM, more listening here would probably pay off.
October 1977 QR M Page 5
28MHz It has been reported that this band has been open to
JA, UA9 and UA@, also that a station signing BY and reputed
to be in China has been heard.
QSL info; HI8BJAF, Box 1157 Santa Domingo, Dominican Rep.
5B4EU via SM3GII, 9K2FO, Box 177 Kuwait.
My appreciation to Bill VK7AK and Lionel VK7HL for sending me
information for inclusion in these notes.

VHF notes by Joe VK7JG.
The R.D. contest has come and gone for another
12 months with what would be the poorest activity on VHF for
many years, not to mention the Athol Johnson contest with a
return of only 4 logs.
Some mention has been made that the A.J. contest
is possibly held at the wrong time of the year. Perhaps it
would be more suitable to hold it with the John Moyle National
Field Day, give it some thought and let me know either by
phone or on the air.
Meanwhile back on 6 metres, nothing has happened
exept for two local contacts. 2 metres is much the same
although activity should improve with the acquisition of new
equipment by several Northern members.
On 432MHz both Kevin VK7ZAH and myself are active
with Kevin running a new solid state 144/432 transverter and
myself a valve rig.
Last night 17/9/77 I worked two passes of Oscar
VII mode B (432MHz in - 144MHz out) with very good signal
strengths, stations worked were VK3ADR and VK3ZBB on both
passes and VK6ZGQ on the 2nd pass.
that's all for now
Novice notes by John VK7NJD.
First I would like to thank the Editor,John VK7JV,
for giving me the opportunity to write these notes which we hope
will be included every month.
Several good contacts have been made on 10 metres
this month by Allan VK7NAB and myself, these include VK8, VK2,
VK4, JA and UA9UCJ (victor). Mark VK7NAM has been heard working
mobile on 10 metres.
As from Wednesday October 5th there will be a net
operating on 28.550 starting at 8 p.m. using the call-sign
VK7NB. It is intended to make this a regular get together on
Wednesdays so if you can, come and join us.
80 metre activity in the Novice segment is still
very crowded, lets hope something will be done in the near
future as more and more people are getting a Novice license.
