MESSAGE FROM DIVISIONAL PRESIDENT, PETER KING VK7ZPK
The 1985 Tasmanian Amateur Radio Convention provides an opportunity
for us to closely examine our personal and collective ambitions so
far as our hobby of amateur radio is concerned.
As we take the opportunity to look back over the hard won success
story of the 75 years of formal existence of our institute we can
feel justifiable pride in the continued expansion of activities laid
on the foundations of our pioneers. We have maintained forefront
endeavours in state of the art advances in technological changes which
have been so predominant in communications generally. We must all be
prepared to ensure that the foundations of the past continue to be
re-inforced by the challenges of both today and tomorrow in order that
those who follow us into the next 75 years will be able to enjoy the
benefits of our hobby as afforded to us by our forebears.
On behalf of the Tasmanian Division of the Wireless Institute of
Australia I welcome you all to TARC 85 and confidently trust that you
will find further enhancement and fulfillment of your aims and ambitions
in amateur radio there.

T+A-R-C. DINNER
MASONIC CLUB
HOBART
8 JUNE 1985
1915K for 1930K
IMPORTANT MESSAGE
This dinner is not the official T.A.R.C. function.
The official function will be the Cocktail Hour at the Montrose QTH. This dinner
is arranged to satisfy those few people who responded to the questionnaire advising
that they wished for some social activity to be organised. 1In fact, the response
now indicates that it is going to be very well attended, but, even so it is not
our '"official"” function, (so there will not be officials, official guests, speeches
etc., just a good time to be had by all!!).
Now please read on .........
A cabaret style dinner will be held as above. 1Indications are that more than 70
will be in attendance.
The Club is a pleasant friendly place, the food is 0.K., the music enjoyable, but
not close or loud. Easy conversation around the festive board will be possible.
The dance floor is in a nearby room, readily accessible, not cramped and the music
should suit most of the guests, I feel sure.
The main meal menu is a choice from four dishes, as is the case for dessert.
Cost is $9.50 which is covered by ticket purchase. Drinks are obtainable at the
convenient bar at reasonable prices.
For catering purposes the Club needs to know fairly precisely the numbers desirous
of dining and your co-operation is necessary for this information to be given to
them.
ACTION
Please complete the attached form and return as directed, to arrive not later than
Monday, 3 June. Some later additions or cancellations can be accommodated so
long as you do your part now. Please don't delay - tear the .sheet out for
action NOW. ‘

DRESS
Normal neat casual - let's say coat and tie -(plus daks) for gents and ladies
seem to know what is 0.K. - but I don't think long frocks are needed. In fact,
if you "dress'" prior tothe '"Cocktail Hour" and attend that function you will be
ready for a steady drive to the Club, to arrive say 1915K (that's 7.15 p.m. you
know) for "something' before we sit down at 1930K (fairly promptly please).
Remember parking may take a little while to find in the precincts of the Club,
(maybe we should organise a maxi taxi/mini bus from Montrose to Club and return -
let's know if you think so).
ACTIVITY
Good food, good fellowship, good music and dance. Chocolate wheel and raffle
may be joined if desired, but it is not obtrusive. Hope to have your company
that night. Wear your name tag so we will all know who you are.

NOTES FROM THE TASMANIAN DIVISION WIA
This copy of QRM, the newsletter of the Tasmanian Division of the WIA,
s being mailed to all licensed amateurs in Tasmania.
It 1s a special edition which outlines arrangements for the 75th Anniver-
sary Tasmanian Amateur Radio Convention.
Unfortunately, costs prohibit us from regularly mailing copies of QRM to
your home address and normally QRM is available at WIA meetings.
We feel that, given the importance of the 1985 TARC, the expenses incurred
in postage on this occasion are well justified.
The TARC and associated functions are open to all amateurs, irrespective of
whether they are members of the WIA or not.
Every so often, however, at the risk of belabouring the point, amateurs
are asked "Are you a member of the Wireless Institute of Australia?'.
Because you are not does not make it mandatory that you should be, for it is
not the Institute's policy to twist people's arms in the sense "You be
a member or else".
Nevertheless, to the clear thinking amateur, his hobby is available to him
because his is represented officially by an organisation pledged to speak for
him and generally look after his interests. Without representation he would
be battling wuphill to protect the frequency allocations used by the Amateur
Service all over the world.
When membership grows in an organisation like ours, then better facilities can
be made available. The WIA already provides a technical publication, up-to-date
annual call sign book, provides for QSL card distribution to members, arranges
lectures, picture nights, social nights, field days, contests, AOCP classes,
slow morse transmissions, it maintains liaison with the licensing authority
to bring about better conditions for the amateur as the art dictates changes,
liaison on a worldwide basis is carried on with amateur societies through the
International Amateur Radio Union, branches and zones are organised for the
amateur who lives in the country, affiliated clubs are also fostered and en-
couraged to become part of the WIA orgnisation, a library of technical publica-
tions is avilable for the use of members.
All these things are available to members only because the WIA is an organisa-
tion with a purpose - to look after the interests of the amateur service in
Australia and encourage young people to take up radio as a hobby in the
national interest.
This purpose can only be expanded and maintained by membership without which no
organisation can exist. If the WIA did not exist you might not have an amateur
licence today. Give us your support as an amateur, a short wave listener or
an interested party. You will find the membership information freely available
upon application to the secretary of the WIA branch in your area.
Could we suggest you use the membership form attached and join now 2?2
