ORM QRT?
The QKM committee enjoys producing this
newsletter and would like to continue with
it's production, however, the current
situation makes it difficult. Unless the
funding situation is altered, this may be
the last copy of GhM that you receive from
the present committee.
The crux of the problem is the difficulty
encountered in obtaining advertising copy
and subsequent payment by the advertisers,
Considerable time and many phone calls (in
business hours) are necessary to chase up
the very funds which are needed to produce
tne newsletter and althougn there are some
regular advertisers, the cost of production
exceeds advertising income,
After much deliberation the committee
feels that the Division should generally
fund QRM and any surplus over production
costs would be returned to the Division,
To give you an idea of the costs
associated with production, the following
approx. figures are provided.
Postage $40 per issue
Registration $20 per year
Frinting $110 per issue
Total Annual Cost - $920 i.e., 41 ¢ each.
Tnis is $2.46 per year per member.
In conclusion, we enjoy producing QRM, but
not financing it. Until the above problems
are resolved, the future does not look rosy.

HIDXA PO BOX 90 NORFOLK ISLAND SOUTH PACIFIC 2899 end
este
For years, Jim Smith, VK9NS (also P29JS, VK9YS, C21AA, Jim
Zzm7JS, presently 9M8JS and intended VK@JS, Heard Is.)
has been trying to arrange charter of a motor vessel to witr
undertake a DX-pedition to Heard Island. After his last ratr
attempt in Summer 81/82, which fell through at the last recc
moment, he approached yours truly (ex VK@gSJ) for assist- four
ance in a renewed attempt for Summer 82/83%. and
After months of frantic research on international we f
sSupr
scale, an apparently suitable vessel became available
on our homeground: the ex-Albany whale-chaser CheynesII,
now based in Hobart. able
The new owner acquired the vessel from the Maritime sout
Museum of Tasmania, and is presently resurveying it for cont
deepsea trawling and salvaging. He is very keen to under witk
take the voyage to Heard Island for adventuroug and
publicity reasons, even if it might not immediately offe
produce him a great financial gain. As
Afew more months of research followed, to ensure that mour
this vessel and its crew are capable and qualified for
sufficiently to undertake this demanding voyage, going that
through the roaring 40's and 50's (of latitude) to a ever
frozen island in tne sub-antarctic, nearly 3000 nautical 1.
miles from Hobart.
In the meantime, a Sydney based mountaineering group 2.
completed their search for a vessel and radio operators.
Their intended sail goes to Heard Island via Fremantle
and via tne northern route at 35 N, following the
predominant wind, and going south via French Kerguelen
Island. This route will probably take 5-6 weeks,
compared with 2 weeks for the Cheynes II. Departure 4.
dates will be roughly the same, early January.
Me
Their initial requirement of 2 radio operators for
gene
contact with their support group in Australia was
weat
shifted toward more emphasis on the amateur radio DX
aspect. Tnis shift was initiated mainly by a VK6 WIA pose
we lc
group, which offered assistance to organise the required
W (continued)
radio aspect, and was complete when two American DX
foundations promised financial sponsorship. This
support is substantial enough to have swayed the
mountaineers to arrange a special landing on the other
end of the island for the DX party of now 3 amateurs to
establish itself in the old ANARE buildings, just as
Jim intends to do.
Jim's ideas of a DX-pedition are less adventurous
with more emphasis on DX-ing combined with science,
rather than trying to break sailing or mountaineering
records.
Despite the possible loss of funds from the US DX
foundations committed to the mountaineering group and
and the headway tnat group seems to have in publicity,
we feel we should push ahead with HIDXA. Alternative
support is sought in Japan and Saudi Arabia etc.
The steam powered, ice strengthened vessel will be
able to take 18 expeditioners directly from Hobart
southwards, towards the ice-edge of the Antarctic
continent, to Heard Is. and straight back to Hobart
with plenty of fuel to spare.
Already ABC-TV has shown interest and berths will be
offered to a film crew and newspaper journalists.
As the VK6 WIA support has proven so powerful to the
it
mountaineering group, we nereby approach the VK7 WIA
for similar support to the HIDXA. It is not expected
that financial contribution be made by the WIA, but an
even more useful support is requested:
1. Could the WIA be mentioned in publicity campaigns
etc,, as supporting the HIDXA?
2. Could members try to broadcast, on their bands,
that tney support HIDXA, and propogate its
progress?
3, Could WIA members come forward to the HIDXA,
offering assistance and ideas for the organisation,
preparation and fund-raising for the expedition?
4, Could interested members make themselves known
and request associate membership of the HIDXA?
Many supplies are still required, such as food,
generators, inflatable landing crafts, tents, wet
weather gear, etc. etc. Any help or suggestions to
possible donating suppliers are, of course, very much
ired welcomed. s(continued)
Approach may be made directly to Jim Smith, P.0. Box
90, Norfolk Island, 2899. or via undersigned, P.0O. Box

This letter was presented to the Sept. meeting of the
Southern Branch, and support was given along the lines
suggested,

INTRUDER WATCH
We have had a letter from Jim, VK70W regarding intruder
watch. Unfortuneately the list of intruders he enclosed
was too difficult to reproduce here, but there were
some 11 stations using Teletype in the 14 Meg. band
and 5 on 21 Megs. which have been positively identified.
It is up,to us to keep our bands clear of intruders
so please don't leave it to the "other bloke": spend
a few minutes of your operating time listening for
intruders and report your findings to your local watch
officer, Jim Davis VKT70W is the official VK7 officer,

Correspondence
Dear Sir,
The Northern Branch members wish me to convey
to you their congratulations for a fine magazine,
We are well aware of the work required to produce a
magazine on a regular basis. The quality and quantity
of material in the editions so far is much appreciated
-
by our members and we wisnh you well with future editions.
(signed) R. Harper VK70M
Acting Secretary.
EDITORS NOTE: Thankyou for the boost - we needed it!
We received a letter from a Northern Amateur pointing
out that our comments in the June issue of QRM are not
strictly correct. They related to the interested members
being at branch meetings, hence there was no need to
print minutes from the branches,
The letter stated that there were people who were
interested, but due to distance, handicap or illness
could not make it to meetings. We do agree with the
writer and apologise if our comment upset anyone else,
We still do not agree with the principle of printing
branch minutes as they can be, and usually are, covered
adequately on the weekly broadcasts.

Minimum Smoxe
We have received a letter from Bill, VK7TE, advising
us of the following:
The death occurred in Sydney on July 24th. 1982 of
Arthur Carrington-Smith aged 80.
Arthur, ex ATAB, ex OATAB, was one of the foundation
members of the Tasmanian Division of tne WIA.He will no
doubt be remembered for his work in sound film equipment
by many of our older members. He was the first station »
to broadcast live performances from 7EN in Launceston on
Sunday nights. He built the moving coil microphone in
1924-1925 which was used by 7BN. It was an electro-magnet
dissipating 6 watts in its field coil - this, when the
B.B.C. and Australian stations used carbvponics,
Arthur Carringtom-Smith moved to Sydney in 1928 where
he developed a syncronised sound picture system superior
to the mighty overseas companies.
For his professional achievements, Arthur was made a
"Fellow of the American Society of Motion Picture and
Television Engineers" which is a rare honour, even in
the U.S.
Arthur last visited Tasmania in 1981 and shared
memories of his early days with bill.,
He was a Tasmanian amateur of whom we may all be proud.

NOTES FROM OUR NORTHERN SCRIBE - Robin Harwood VK7RH.
The Northern Branch has a new president, Andre Everts
VK7AE - who replaces Brian Yeoman, VK7ZBY, who
resigned because of business and family commitments.,
We would like to thank Brian for his contribution to
the Branch, and hope that in the future, he will be
able to contribute to the Branch once again.
In late September, the Branch will have mounted a
display at the Careers & Hobby Exhibition in the Albert
Hall Convention Complex. This is held at a different
time of the week,to that normally, and the accent will
be bringing to the notice of those leaving school or
college, various career and recreational options,
And talking of public awareness- Phil, VK7JJ, has
suggested that we mount a display in the Brisbane
Street Mall, one Saturday morning in December, This
would bring amateur radio more to the notice of the
general publie. The envisaged display would show the
various facets of the hobby, including a possible
Third Party Net similar to that Sam Voron has
organized. The idea is being investigated further and
a report is expected back at a future meeting.
There will be a video night in the October meeting
activities, and in November, David, VK7ZKI will be
giving a lecture, In December, there will not be a
formal meeting as such, instead an outing to Hollybank
Reserve is being planned for all the family. Further
details can be had in future broadcasts.
Two new calls in the Launceston area are Terry,
VK7KF ex 7NTP and Colin, VK7LB ex 7NCL. Both have
been active since acquiring their new calls.
The amount of activity on the new 70cm Repeater
seems to be increasing daily. There has been talk
about changing this to a new site to give a wider
access to it, Talking of shifting sites, I believe
that Joe, VK7JG, will have moved to Eccleston Road
by now.
well, that is all for this time. Until December,

MAN'S CONTACT WITH HIS ELECTRICAL ENVIRONMENT;
T
(cont.)
Probably the first death from accidental contact
with electricity occurred in 1879; a stage carpenter
was killed at Lyon by alternating current of a Siemens
Dynamo which was developing about 250 Volts at the
time. Since then the number of deaths from electricity
has steadily increased as the use of electricity has
extended.
Voltage as low as 46 has caused accidental death, but
on the other hand, recovery has taken place after
contact with 500 Volts, and even as high as 20,000 Volts.
Contact with alternations of 50 cycles per sec. are
very efficient in causing tetanic spasm of muscles,
If tne frequency is greatly increased, say 1 lMegacycle
per sec., nerve response could not keep pace and the
subject may experience nothing more than warmth,
Many factors aifect the outcome of the accidental
contact; the amount of current at the source, the
duration of the contact, and the state of health of
the victim,
