Last month I said that the October issue would be a special
for TARC,.,As you can see it is'nt; I'm afraid I made the comment
a month early,.So all those who were going to send in articles,
please do'nt let me put you off..Il1 even make sure the post | ox
is kept empty in order to cater for the rush ? Seriously, oricinal
articles are badly needed ; Thanks to Adrian VK7ZAT for his
excellent contributions...........A couple of personal observations
that I would like to make ; firstly to those readers that do not
seek to involve themselves in WIA activities then I would like to
soy that you only get out of something what you put in.........
Second.y that it is gratiffing to see the infusion of activity
that the' new venue for the North West Branch has brought and also
that depencing on decisions, that the Southern Branch make, then
that Branct may move into the 80's,with a renewed vigour,
maonE.

and 1t 1s hoped that all members buy tickets and support efforts
to finance this years TARC,
Registration forms for TARC ; A number of registration forms have
already been received by the Branch aond the early response is very
pleasing.,
General Business In discussion a number of points were made in
relation
to> the sunday morning broadcast
(a) Lac< of consistancy with relay on 8C metres, In reply to this
it was pointed out that the lack of involvement in the relay caused
rostering »>roblems,
(b) Passing of material for use, immediately prior to the B-oad-
cast, Discussion on this showed that although 1t was undesiranle,
the shortaje of material available to the person originating the
Broadcast, forced the acceptance of last minute material.
(c) Possibility of night time broadcast on 80 metres. In response
it was pointed out that members were canvassed in the past on this
subject and indicated that they preferred the existing time. After
further discussion it was resolved that the Northern Branch conduct
a Broadcast and call back on 3.572 MHz at 1930 hrs on October 14th,
It was further agreed to notify the P&T Dept of this intention.
The meeting closed at 9.25 PM and then participated in an auction
of books and surplus gear from the shack of Ed VK7ED, This was in a
good cause and was well supported,Some of the bits were in clo>sed
containers, but judging by the eager bidding on some items it 'vas
obvious some had inside information, The Branch itself purchased
some of the reference books to add to its library,

PRIORITY CHANNEL cnd AUTO—SIMPLEXER for_ the IC22$ by Adrian
This easy modification gives o second channel at the flick of
a switch which can be installed on the mike ; ideal when you are
operating mobile,
The unit consists of two seperate circuits :
(1) Auto Simplexer
will give simplex operation on any pre-selected channel, where
the simplex/duplex switch can be in any position.
(2) Priority Channel
This disconnects the channel switch on the IC22S and switches
to o seperate set of matrix diodes to give a preset channel,
Construction
The circuit was built on a piece of O.1 space veroboard (9 by
18 holes approx). The veroboard is attatched to the oscillator
shield on the left hand side of the PLL board,Wire brackets that
are soldered to shield and vero will hold it in place,
The wire from the wiper of the channel switch 1s disconnected
and put to +9V on the board(point A),The new wire from point B
is connected to the wiper of the channel switch,
The matrix diodes for the priority channel are put in position
23 on the matrix board and wired to point C,(use programming chart)
Point D is wired to the unused pin 3 on the mike socket,
Remove the wire from the simplex/duplex switch and connect the
switch to point E.The wire that was removed then connects to
point F,(other end of this wire goes to 'db'on the matrix board)
The diodes D1,D2 etc, where fitted onto the matrix board (one
for each channel required) have their anodes commoned and then
connected to point G,
The spare mike line should be connected in the plug (pin 3)
and wired to the switch in the mike. The positioning of the switch
and the LED are left to the individual but there is plenty of
room to accomodate them, C 7o PRioRITY

The usual monthly meeting of the Branch was held at the Penguin
High School on 14th September and was well attended..There were three
visitors welcomed, namely Reg,VK7KK who journeyed from Launceston and
Nancy Emmerson with OM Peter,
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and
in the Treasurers report Ivan VK7ZOA/NOA brought the meeting up to
date on the financial standing of the Branch,It was decided to try to
increase the working capital by fund raising.
David Morgan, proposed by Winston VK7EM and seconded by Paul VK7PB
was welcomed to the WIA,.
The Giant Raffle which was donated by courtesy of Roelf Vos at
Ulverstone was drawn by Reg VK7KK and won by Kirby VK7KC.
Tony VK7AX advised that testing was to be carried out on the Lonah
repeater,The 70 cm beacon was out of operation for the time being.
On activities,Vince VK7NVH,outlined those by the H.F. group held
at the Penguin High School ; he would like to see more members of the
Branch become involved,.Vince also told the meeting, that the HF group
were planning to organize a J.O.T.A. base and that it was proposed to
send aloft a large Helium=filled Balloon carrying a long wire for an
antenna. (Perhaps there would be sufficient hot air available =~ Hi)
ATV/VHF groups ; Winston VK7EM transmitted some good quality ATV
from his home QTH to the ATV group,at their last meeting...Paul VK7PB
advised that the ATV group is extending its activities across to VK3,
In the Microprocessor group,Steve advised that this group wished
to monitor propogation across the Strait, such as what signals were
available in the vertical or horizontal plane,.The microprocessor
would keep track of time, signal strength etc.,It is intended to use
the unit in a universal way, with the addition of suitable hardware,
' Reg VK7KK gave a talk on the book "500 questions and answers for
the novice".
Brian,VK7NBH gave details of some very interesting Raffles, that
now are available on behalf of the High School funds,.Members show
their appreciation of the use of the Schools facilities,by assisting
with these raffles,
The gctivity for the night was arranged by Paul,VK7PB in the form
of a most interesting video=tape, the well known "G6-CJ Aerial Circus",
Much has been written in the various electronic magazines, regarding
these tapes, which were recorded at Flemington in Victoria.
The lecturer gave most impressive demonstrations, both visually and
audibly,of the various types of HF,VHF and UHF antennae..The audio
signal derived from the loop, when waved about the various antenna that
was under demonstration, showed in no uncertain manner, the Polar Pattern
the effect of reflectors, directors, radials, height above ground and so
on,.Amost interesting display.
The meeting concluded with a very FB supper, prepared by the
Devonport members, .David,VK7SM when washing up,looked most attractive
in an "off the shoulder"apron, tastefully caught at the waist by an
alligator clip..Thanks to members for bringing supper ; we had plenty.
See you at the next meeting ...Jim

A CRYSTAL MARKER GENERATOR
FROM LF TO UHF - - - -
INTROLUCT ION
A most desirable adjunct to the test equipment in any shack is a crystal
locked oscillator of known frequency. Such a device could serve as a band edge
marker, a weak signal source or as a test signal. Desirably, all these functions
could be carried out with the one device, the oscillator frequency being adjustable
to enable it to be zeroed on WHWHV etc. The marker generator described is excellent
for these purposes.
One parameter which has always been a problem has, in the past, been the
spectrum of the oscillator. In general, oscillators with harmonics at say, 1MHgz
intervals, were rarely useful above about 100MHz at best. Those with harmonics
past 100MHz used crystals rarley lower than 8MHz which made them of restricted use.
Over the last several years, the writer has built many test oscillators with
the aim of having a generator producing spots 1MHz apart from 1MHz through to
1296MHz. This article draws attention to a circuit which easily acheives these
parameters.
THECIRGUIT
The oscillator circuit is essentially an aperiodic Butler 050111a{or.
The frequency is adjusted by means of the series trimmer. Q3 acts as an emitter
follower buffer to drive Q4 and Q5 which form a Schmitt trigger delivering a
square wave with very fast rise and fall times.
The transistors specified in the original article for Q4 and Q5 were BSY2ls.
However, types such as the 2N3564, 2N57TO(PN5770), 2N918, BFY90 etc make
excellent substitutes. (According to S5MM, 2N914 and 2N2222transistors have been
used but information as to signal strength on 1296MHz is not available),

PERFORMANCE
As the crystal is not mounted in an oven, and often the harmonic of
r—'\
interest is several hundred times the crystal fundamental, temperature changes
should be avoided. e.g: enclose crystal in a polyurethane block etc. For a similar
reason, the power supply should be well regulated or aged batteries used.
T—\M‘r—i
Up to 100MHz, the spots are many dB over S9, likewise on 144MHz. On 432MHgz
the spots were S9 when the unit was a few inches from a 5QZ/6SS/6UP type
converter front end.
On 1296MHz, the spots were around 52/3 when the unit was either coupled into
the converter via a piece of coax or via a few inches of wire into the RF cavity
(diode mixer type converter).
|
#
This circuit is highly recommended. A 100kHz crystal has been tried and
gives usable harmonics to 432MHz. However, for crystals lower than 1MHz, more
series capacitance is required. As crystals vary, this should be determined by
L
experiment. .

Southern Branch Wicen members have been particularly energetlc
recently and have organized in the near future a Wicen exercise,This is
to be held in conjunction with the Police Search and Rescue squad on
the weekend of 6th to 8th October; It appears this will be a tryout for
Wicen as far as the Police are concerned..,This is an opportunity to
reinforce the favourable impression gained by the Police during a
recent demonstration of amateur communications.,
The exercise will be based in the Lake Pedder/Mt,Anne area..The
communications will be using HF and VHF on phone and telytype.Equipment
will include 2 portable HF rigs;2 portable and 2 handheld VHF rigs.
The aim of the exercise is to establish comms between ;
(a)Field headquarters and Hobart - HF
(b)Field headquarters and field parties - VHF
(c)If possible between field parties and Hobart on VHF,using a link up
between channel 40,a field repeater and repeater 2.
Any station able to listen in to the field stations, are invited to
call in on frequency and give a signal report, provided the frequency is
not being used to pass messages,.The probable frequencies to be used
are 3600 KHz,7050 KHz and repeater 2...cceeceseossososssesesoossssesss
The first Wicen sked was held on Wed 19th Sept at 8.00 PM on 3570
and repeater 2; These are now held regularly every 3rd Wed of the month.
Wicen are also having a display stand at the next amateur radio
convention (TARC) and any assistance will be gratefully received ;
If you can help contact Andrew VK7AW,..Talking of the Hamfest,it is
hoped that as many Southern members as possible make it to Launceston
and help make the weekend a success,
