EDITORIAL
IT QRMA is late arriving this month, then the fault lies with
those that sent material that arrived on the 21st Aug which was
the deadline for copy. This applies to more than half of the
articles in this edition so if Branches,Division etc could try
to forward material as soon as possible and not leave it till
the last minute. It would be very much appreciated
On to a more constructive note ; Next months QRM will be given
over to a detailed agenda, times, maps of venues etc for TARC 79.
Space will be provided naturally for Branch notes and any-
thing of special need.
To all and especially those who have not been able to attend
an Amateur convention (Hamfest) then I encourage you to send in
your registration. The weekend is mainly a casual get-together for
all amateurs, listeners and any interested persons regardless of
whether they are members of the wIA or no»
The Convention is the one function of the year that truly
reflects all of the different aspects of Amateur Radio and offers
somethingfor everyone .•. Try and attend the whole weekend and
include the Sat night dinner/dance,as the social side of the
Amateur Fraternity is as important as the technical. The XYL's at
least would agree wit# his sentiment.
In the meantime, anyone who can offer any assistance with the
Convention arrangements, please contact the Northern Branch and if
you have any surplus equipment, then perhaps you could donate some
for use at the TARC auction. If so contact David Bailey VkYY at
home 003 261880 or work 0O3 311666 (non-metering number)·
Back to QRM,if anyone could provide technical articles etc of
perhaps write a letter on your favourite grouch, then feel welcome.
Only remember, that if any grouching is directed at the Editor,
then I have a whole magazin
e!in which to reply, Hi bi·

SOUTHERN BRANCH NOTES
Urgent Notice; For those who took part in the RD Contest, you
have until the 3rd of Sept to have your log sheets in;so unless QRM is
late you have 2 days to get them there.
Southerners were saddened at the death of Crosby Walsh on Sat
the llth August. His helpfulness to many, particularly to those who were
newcomers to Amateur Radio, will long be remembered.
. On a happier note,both Ted Beard VK7EB and Ian Nicholls VK7ZZ
are now at home after a sojourn in hospital and are making good use of
the convalescent period for catching up on amateur radio.
The six metre beacon hos had a short and sad history, parts
of it are now back to the drawing board,If at first you do'nt succeed ••
Southern Branch now have some CW tapes of various speeds for
novice or full call.we also now have a supply of name tags so there is
no excuse if you are fined 20cents for not wearing one next meeting.
Mr.Abbott was given a silver bowl at the last meeting in
recognition for his services in auditing for the Branch for the last
three yeors ...• At this meeting affiliation with SES was also discussed.
It has been decided to go ahead with this, provided the agreement meets
with the approval of the hon.legal officer
The next meeting will be held on the 5th Sept-The main topic
for discussion will be a report from the Building fund committee on
their findings ;ie; to build or not to build •••• Come along to have a say.
Following the meeting there will be a short talk on operating
procedures and DXing;a must for the newcomer to radio.Mention will be
made of the QSL Bureau and how it works-also how to use it.. Cont. o}p
s
There may also be a film on teletype or a videotape on the making of
printed circuit boards,; This depends on availability,
•••••••• Footnote; This meeting will start at 8,00 PM sharp,,,»....
The recent bingo night was attended by about 4O people;mostly
amateurs,and a good time was had by all.Fortunately V7GD,Grahan
Johnstone was not feeling well so the organizers made a profit. The next
WAGS do at the moment is the square dance to be held on the last
weekend in October, the location not finalised yet.
Following this there will be a Wine Bottling BBQ at the home
of the Moffats at Ferntree on the lst_December .The wine is already
ordered and consists of Brown Brothers Moselle and Port,In view of the
popularity of the Port at the previous wine bottling, the amount that
is ordered hos been substantially increased from the previous time.
Any orders for wine/port may be placed now with Judy on
285807 or with any other WAGS member.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
The Editor Q.R.M.
In a weak moment I promised our worthy Editor that I would
write an article for our magazine, and furthermore that I would endeavour
to start an argument,I have always believed that this is the way to
find out.So I have selected the Sunday morning Divisional News broad-
cast, what brought about this was personal experience.
I thought I was doing OK until One evening I heard my
two old friends VK3OM and VK3ARZ, the originators of the Federal tapes
on air,so I called in to say hello. One thing led to another and I
finished up playing a segment of one tape back to them, exactly as I do
in a Sunday morning broadcast. Imagine my horror when Ron came bock
and said "That was horrible, what do you think Bi11,And Bill replied,
"I'll have to agree",So I was back to square one and since then hove
left no stone unturned to improve my performance.
But what of the broadcast in general. We are all nice fellows
and when asked to report,we are not at all critical. However, having
received a slap in the eye personally,it has made me more critic1
generally. The playing of recorded material often leaves something to be
desired as it is difficult to arrange levels so that tape and mic
levels are balanced ••• A lot depends on individual voices ; and do'nt
bother to tell me abo_yt mine , I already know.So I anxiously await my
ext broadcast to find out the truth and after this lot, criticism wo'nt
be difficult to come by.
If I am reasonably successful,I will be pleased to pass on my
method,if not then it's back to the drawing board..The method I used
previously was taken from an article in QRM,I thought it was okay, but
it did'nt work for me;Maybe it's not doing so well for the originator
either.
So let us all strive for a better quality broadcast. To me it's
a challenge and irrespective of criticism I am going to carry on.
Someone has to do it and we do'nt get trampled underfoot with volunteers,
So keep at it boys; which reminds me ... how _about a lady amateur
getting into the roster,It would appear that there are too many old
timers doing the job and there is plenty of room for more younger
members to have a go,
in future Well Ken,how
for my did I make out.You had better hold some space

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The ditor,
Dear Sir, I would like to submit the following to you for possible
use in Q.R.Mi..
Listening on 10 metres lately, I was lucky enough to hear my first
Pakistan station. He was working a very large Japanese dog-pile. To my amazement
there were no V.K. novices even trying for him. After listening for a while it
finally got the better of me, and I tried a call. What do you know? He came straight
back with a 5x9 report. The Q.S.L. imformation Was unusual, just send my name
and address and a couple of I.R..'s. lo 2.S.L. card!
Afterwards I heard from several sources that he must have been an I.R.C.
collector. There was no way that I would ever get a card back from him. But what
the hell, so I sent off my card, and 4 I.R.C.'s. (He also said that postage was
very expensive in Pakistan.).
Eight days later I had to front at the post office to sign for a registered
letter. It was from Pakistan, complete with 6 stamps om the front, and 3 on the
back of Enclosed

was the Q.S.L., and also a letter. Part of which I would like
to share. Quote: "Thank you very much for the very nice Q50 & QSL. To-day is a

DO YOU KNOW CAPACITOR CODING
7
Capacitance is measured in Farads. This is too large a unit for
most uses so various fractions ore used; micro-Farad (F) a millionth
of a Farad; nanoFarad (nF) a thousandth of a microFarad and picoFarad
(pF) a thousandth of, a nanoFarad. So O.01F is equal to lOnF or
10,000F. (uF ; 16) (nF; 17j (r ; 16j
Capacitors are marked in all these units, often without indicating
which one.Electrolytics and some tantalum capacitors are marked in µF
with the working voltage, ceramics in pF and mylar in pF or uF,
Many ceramic and mylar capacitors ore marked using the IEC code
for capocitor.s,o system of 3 numbers and a letter giving the the value
and tolerance of the capacitor. The first two numbers are the signif-
icant figures and the third is the number of zeroes following (value
in pF),The letter indicates the tolerance; M ; 20% K; 10% J ; 5%
So a 123K is a 12000pF or 12nF or a O.012F capacitor at 10% tolerance
Some of the larger value greencaps are marked in uF (usually
O.lµF and larger).Smoller ceramics ore usually marked in pF.,
One more method is used to identify capacitors. Some polyester and
~
tantalum capacitors are marked with a colour code similar to resistors.

Partly as an interesting technical exercise and partly to fulfil1
a possible WICEN requirement for a portable 146 MHz repeater,it was
decided to attempt to connect together two IC22S transceivers,This
short article details the experiments conducted and also describes the
modifications and extra circuitry necessary to link the two transceivers.
The spectrum of the IC22S TX output was examined and found to be
extremely clean in the region ±2MHz o the carrier (and elsewhere of
course);nothing higher than 70dB below carrier,The receiver was an
unknown quantity and a field test was carried out to determine its suit-
ability,Two vehicles aach fitted with a IC22S,were driven to a 1ocat;3}
in Lenah Valley from where Rep 8,Mt Barrow, could just be worked. One of
the vehicles moved away whilst transmitting, until the repeated signal
received in the second vehicle was indistinguishable from the repeater
was 40 metres. signal. At that point the seperation between the vehicles
identification
From this simple test,it was concluded that 4O metres is the
minimum separation required to reduce any de-sensitization to a neglible
level,for a 10 watt TX,6OO KHz removed,using quarter wave whips in the
centre of the roof of each vehicle and at the same horizontal level. With
this information, the interconnection details were finalised and the
block diagram and cct are shown in figure 1 and 2 respectively,
The TX keying information is derived from the signal lamp of the
IC22S receiver. The collector voltage of Qll goes low(about l.5V)when the
mute opens, either due to a received signal or to the squelch adjustment.
If the accessory plug is in place, the MPS37O2 turns on and operates relay
RL. in the tobacco tin(rectangular variety ex VK7BJ) Contact RLI then
applies.on earth to the PTT line of the transmitting IC22S,bringing on
the transmitter,
Audio from the receiving 1C22S is obtained from the ext spkr socket,
Following a monitor speaker,a 38dB pad reduces the audio level to that
suitable for the Mic input of the TX(about 5m/ rms )with the receiver
volume control set to the first scale division,A switch on the tobacco
tin allows either received audio or a local microphone to be selected,
(eg ; for manual identification of the relaying station)
When the received signal ceases, the collector of Qll goes high,
MPS3702 turns off and relay RL releases after about 0.5 sec; the relay
is held on by the 100 ohm/470uF network,to provide a noise tail.
PERFORMANCE
The cct as described has been tested in the field on several occas-
ions and was found to perform extremely well, down to minimum usable
signal levels.De=sensiti.zotion is undetectable; this hos been checked
by switching the repeater transmitter off when a weak signal is
received; no change was detected in the amount of noise on the incoming
signal. The repeater has also been used to provide a re-broadcast from
repeater 8 input frequency(l46.4 MHz) to repeater 2 input frequency
(146.1 MHz),This was not a very stringent test though,as although the
spacing was only 30O KHz,a TX power of 1 Watt was used and the input
signal level was very high,Seperation between the two vehicles was in
this case only about 20 metres,
It would be possible to use other types of transceivers for this
application; each pair would have to be tested for minimum separation
between sets and a patch system designed for the type of set used to
allow for variations in mic sockets, audio levels stc,The IC22S is
however, very suitable, because of the large number of frequencies that
are available and also its reverse repeater facility.
Many thanks to Horvey,VK7HK,for his enthusiasm and assistance.

SCENE and HEARD
For the past month,I have been observing the Radio scene here in
Europe. The spectrum here is quite crowded, with numerous stations
broadcasting in a multitude of languages and dialects.Broadcasting
in Europe is largely used as a political tool in a propoganda war
Every available frequency is in use almost constantly and there
are pressures to shift low priority traffic onto VHF or UHF and even
to co-axial cable direct to the listener. The WARC conference in
Geneva will radically alter the spectrum and the main casualty will
be Amateur Radio and especially in the HF bands.
Utilization of SSB and narrow band FM for broadcasting, will
increase for the developed countries but the A3 mode will remain for
the poorer countries for some time. The USSR is under heavy pressure
to remove its "woodpecker" (0THB Radar)although it denies it exists.
Vietnam, along with China and the Gulf States have been warned to stop
violating the agreement on frequency allocation,as these countries
are the worst offenders for frequency spectrum violations.
The use of FM here is also more widespread than in Australia,Many
Cities have up to four or five separate programs simultaneously,In
Venice I counted over 20 stations and there was severe cross-mod
problems. In Berlin there are about l4 stations, allowing for the East
and West Germans with their different ideologies and also stations
for British,American and French interests. In Eastern Europe the FM-
band is different to that in the West; from 66-73 MHz except in East
Germany, where the standard 88-108 MHz is used.
In all countries, the Broadcasting service is controlled with the
exception of Italy, where "Rafferty's" rules seem to apply.Due to a
successful Court case the State monopoly on Broadcasting and TV was
broken.,The situation is naturally very confused although most of the
battles are in the FM band and TV. The State radio still continues in
the medium frequency spectrum,The Italian government is rather unstable
at the moment and seems powerless to act,This is reflected in the
piracy in the Amateur bands.
Thats all till next month

WI€EN NOTES
A meeting took place in Hobart on Aug l5th between WICEN reps
arid members of the Police.WICEN was represented by VK7A, VK7HK a#4
VK7SS while Inspector Massie, head of the Search and Rescue unit with
Inspector Haas, head of the Comms section represented the Police. The
meeting was convened by the P&T Dept and Messers Melling and Thorne
attended from that department.
The meeting began with a talk by VK7Aw briefly describing amateur
radio, including the type of equipment used, the frequencies available
and the qualifications required by licencees,
This was followed by a demonstration using a portable HF and VHF
station. The antenna used was a piece of hook up wire out the window
and down a couple of floors to a fence.
The Police seemed quite impressed with the demonstation with Vk7'g
WA,KH/M(Burnie) MX(Dport) KJ(Ouse) and Gv(Taroona) were contacted on
7 MHz. A VK5 and a ZL station were also contacted,To round off the
demonstration VK7KJ was worked via Repeater 2,using a l Watt TX at
Ouse and al Watt hand held in Hobart.
As a result of the meeting,WICEN is to be invited to participate
in a Search and Rescue exercise in the near future. We will also be
installing an HF dipole at Police HQ in Hobart.
All those WICEN members in Hobart who have volunteered for duty
are asked to be on air at 200O hours on the 3rd Wednesday of each
month. The frequencies initially will be 28.570 MHz SSS and Repeater 2,
