 KYOKUTO MODS
 From he S.A.w.I.A. Journal - Aug 78
IMPROVING S MET.2:R DYNAMIC RANGE - This is easy. It merely needs a
series resistor in the meter lead to prevent the meter needle hitting
the stop on moderate strength signals. The resistor used is about 10
,- 12k ohm, but is selected to suit the particular unit, as the meter
take-off point is after the first limiter stage and the limiting po
varies slightly. The 1/4 or 1/8 watt resistor is soldered direct to
the meter lead pin on the receiver pcb
IMPROVING TRANSMIT AUDIO - Kenwood and Yaesu owners also note - they
too suffer from woofy and muffled audio. Some form of audio pre-
emphasis is desirable - unfortunately not included in amateur equip-
                                                                          -
mnent by some manufacturers. The series capacitor to the audio
amplifier i.c. is reduced in value to provide a degree of low frequenc,
roll-off, making the audio sound much cleaner. C45, a 2.2 mfd is
replaced by a O.47 mfd greencap or similar. A check after modif-
ication should be made with a reliable listener as the microphone gain
control may need slight adjustment. Usually this is unnecessary as
most Japanese rigs have the microphone gain set far too high by the
factory.
IMPROVING OUTPUT POWER & RELIABILITY - There is a small 30pfd capacito
in parallel with the series output tuning trimmer, in the PA section
under the small clip-on lid. Several of these capacitors have failed
in service. why they were fitted is a mystery, as the variable cap-
acitor is only just meshed anyway. Removal of the small capacitor is
easy with a small iron. Replace the clip-on lid and retune the PA for
maximum output, which should be slightly higher than before, indicat
that the removed capacitor was slightly lossy.

HOME COLOUR FILM & PRINT PROCESSING
Don't use the printing tank system, temperature control is too
difficult. Just use ordinary developing trays that you would
normally have for B & W work. '--,/

Don't buy an analysing system.
Don't buy unmatched films, paper, and/or chemicals.
The following has been found satisfactory by the writer;
Enlarger with a filter drawer. (Mine is a Jap "LL" about $90)
Ordinary common or garden photographic tcheromet;er,
3 processing trays (whatever size you int;end to print)
1 film processing tank c/w spiral holder and holding about; 120z
chemical. B& w type is OK. (mine is a Paterson system +,
takes only 1 film but multi-film types are OK, they just
       take more chemicals.)
one-litre bottles for holding chemicals and storage. (I use
       the one-litre soft drink bottles.)
1 set of "Cibachrome-A" printing filters or equivalent. (These
can be cut to size to fit your filter drawer in the enlarger)
Pack of "Kodak" RC37 colour printing paper holds 25 sheets of
       10" x 8", type "N".
                                                                         .-
     For Films
T o 51Ire pack of "Flexicolour" developes kit;, (Contains also
       bleach, fixer and stabiliser.)
     For Colour Print Papers
1 or 5 litre pack of "Ektaprint 3" developer
1 or 5 litre pack of "Ektaprint 3" bleach and f
Number as required of Kodak type "135" films
** Note: all films, papers and chemicals are made by KODAK and are
therefore matched so stay with them and do not vary or mix the
manufacturers. Other makes are no doubt just as effective but
the writer has found that consistency with the above types has
   been beneficial.
With colour processing no safe light is normally used. They are on
the market but the colours are so heavily damped that you can't see
with them anyway. I did conduct several experiments to find a
suitable safe-light and more by trial and error stumbled upon one
which has proved very effective for me. Believe it or not, you can
buy it in the local supermarket for about $1.50 to $200. Its the
little night-light for kids bedrooms, the make-up of which consists
of a small neon encapsulated in a "milky" white plastic surround -
it just plugs into the 3-pin wall socket.
hen working in the darkroom environment. provided this light is
about a metre away and behind you, it provides sufficient light to
work with, after your eyes have become accustommed to the light
The writer has found that it has no discernable effect on the printing
paper. You could find it useful. I certainly do.
The Kodak type 'N' paper is specifically designed for the chemicals
mentioned. The 'N' applies only to the surface which resists finger
marks and is of the 'Lustre' type surface. Other surface types are
OK as preferred but make sure it is "RC37" type .. This paper should
not be subjected to heat and should be allowed to dry in room temp-
erature. It does not require, nor should it be glazed

!'OPICAL TOPICS o Jim VK 7 NOw
During the early part of March we had a visitor from two amateurs
whom we have worked often. Charlie, VK 8 CC from Darwin, who was
touring the Island, spent some time at our C:tl1H, and. the following
day, ?ax VK 7 MY took Charlie for a tour of some of the H.E.C.
 projects.
"yn, VK 4 NG, who spent 30 years on the staff of the ABO - also
touring the State, called and spent the day with us.
'e recently purchased an A7 communications R e the R..A.±., and
it is interesting to note that in out town, resides a lady who was
a Signals Officer in the tJ.A.A.F. and who in fact, operated an AR7
during ~.W.2, and last week end had a visit from her and her husband,
ex Radar R.A.A.P.. The ex ii.A..P. was delighted to switch on the
rig - she never expected to see one in operation again - and proved
that she had not forgotten G.. During active service, she could
copy at 40 odd w.p.m •• I was delighted to receive a picture from the
lady, showing a \·i.A.A.F. Radio operator using: an AR 7 on active ser-
vice. I£ QRM can duplicate a photocopy of this picture, I would make
it available. (Editor's note; we can give it a go Jim).
CLD 'I'IU2RS TAKE NOTE! How many of you remember the Australian
produced "CQ"? On page 90 of the ia.y 1929 issue, I quote the following
                      "EE TASMANIAN FLOODS"

The most important event of the month occurred when the Tasmanian
Telegraph system failed owing to the heavy floods. when Third and
eventh district Hams ere a5le to set; an U!PRECEDENTD CORD for
Australian communications, by carrying on the service usually
rovided by the P.M.G. Telegraph Service.
he Hams responsible for this F piece of work, VX 3 RJ and VK 7 DX,
who maintained a high speed direct communication channel between VIH
and VIM, handling in all 251 messages or a;proximately 11,000 words.
The Australian Hams are indebted to VK 3 RU and VK 7 DX for this
unique opportunity to prove the value of Australian Amateur
Communication."

     'VHF NOTES
It is hard to know where to start as there has been so much activity
on the 6 Metre band during the month although most of it has not been
       in VK 7.
Since last month six has been open to JA on several occassions. On
3-4-79 we had a very good opening where all JA call areas were worked _
except JAB. To finish off the evening Gary HL 9 TG was worked by
about 7 VK 7s. I worked 16 stations using a hand held I0502 invo my
linear. Since then the only other contact has been with VK 4 QO and
VK 4 AMH. This is not the end of the story. For the past weeks
has been open every day from W Land to either ZL or VK call areas.
Listening on 28.885 y0u pick up a wealth of information. It is very
frustrating to hear stations like VK 3 0 and 4 RO working XE A EG
W 6 XJ etc. Stations in South Africa have been working into Hawaii
while down here in Tasmania all you hear is NOISE. However all is not
        gloomy, on Monday 16th at approx 0900 local I heard w 5 VY (559)
working ZL on 51.005 Mhz. As he was operating out of our band alloc-
ation I could not work him. Again on vJednesday 18th Tony VK 7 TVJ
heard W 4 w on CW calling CQ on 50.005. As you can see we are at a
distinct disadvantage by not having the bottom 2Mhz of 6 Metres ..
On the Sunday morning 8/4/79 w 6 KG worked 27 stations in VK areas.
KG 6 JDX is running a beacon on 52.1, other frequency of interest, the
Columbia repeater operates on 50.125Mhz in and52.075 Mhz out. The
maJority of DX contacts are pre-arranged on 28.885 so if you want to
get amongst this "Rare" DX this is definately the frequency to moni to:t'-../_
