The big event in the North-West this month was our meeting
which was held at the home of associate J.Davis. Following a
short meeting, a tour of Jims museum of radios and projectors
was given. This was followed by an unbelieveable supper thanls
to Jim XYL. I did not attend so I can give few details but
knowing Jim as I 80 all those who missed it missed something
extremely worthwhile. We hope Jim will continue giving the
higtory of radio a place in todays world.

Don't forget next month cur lecture on Gunsmithing will be
one also worth attending. See you all there.

Most amateurs b; now will heve heard about the amateur satellites
-oscars 6 and 7= at present orbitting our nlanet, some of you
no doubt have already heard or have had QS0's via them, possibly
others would like to but don't know when or where to listen,
if you dear readers are one of these then read on, therels.mo
special time to start - thats up to you.

fhat you must know is when ogcar is in renge and next where
to point your beam, that is if you want to transmit. (If you
only want to listen almost any old aerial will d0)e

There are only three articles needed pencil, paper and
your lastest copy of 'Amateur Radio'. Under the heading
Project Australis you will find a 1list of figures for both
oscar 6 and oscar 7 and you will notice tuct all the degrees
(®W) zre under 50° and as the oscars are only workable Here
from 1600 t¢ 2400 you will realize that scme adjustments have
to be made.

First take the figure shown in the degrees column for
the day you intend to listen and add to it 115, if t.e answer
is 160 or above you will know the satellite ig in range. Now
take the time for the same day and add to it 7 hours 40 minutes.
This gives you the time the satellite passes the equaltor on the
orbit you will hear BUT there will be a further time lag
because the satellite is travellinz north from the equator on
the evening passes,so you will have %o wait until 1t zZoes over
the northern hemispere and down over Antarctica and its
then we can start to listen.

As a complete orpkit takes one hour fifty five minutes we
will have to add to the answer we zot after adding 7 hours
40 minutes to the time shown in 'AR' a further period
of time wiich will be less than the time of a complete orbit,
this time will vary with the degrees of the orbit and can be
taken from Table *,

Lets work out an example ——
On April 15th 1975 'AR' quotes the following figures
for oscar 7
        ORBIT TINE 2 LONGOy

(as this is above 1600 the satellite will be in range)
Now the time 1 hour 37 minutes
                add 7 % adg »
            answer 9 hours 17 wminutes

From table 1; for 189° we find the time 1 hour 32 minutes so
this also has to be added

                            9 hours 17 minutes
                 Plus 1 Y 33 minutes

and the answer is 10 hours 50 minutes Zulu
and the orbit 1888.

Its as simple as that but if you want to know where to
point your beam these bearings will be near cnough.

                             160° East
                             1709 frou SE to NE
180° to 200° from SSE to approx N
The 200° pass is directly overhead and from there around
to 2300 you swing your beam westerly
                             210° to 220° from S to HW
                             230° to 240°, " 'S to W
The period of time you should hear the satellite will be
                            For 1609 gpprox 10 minutes
                             = 1700 W 15 0
                     5 180° to 225° approx 18 to 20 minutes
and between 225° to 240° the tiue drops back to only 13 minutes.

In the examples used you start to listen at 10 hours
50 minutes Z with your Jeam pointing SSE, the satellite will be
in range for apvrox 18 minutes and you begm from S5E To N in
that period.

To hear an eariier or later pass all that 1s necessary is
to substact or =dd 29° to 189 in the exemyle shown and substract
or add 1 hour 55 minutes to 9 hours 17 minutes and continue
on from there with the necessary adjustments for the new times
and degzrees as already ex.lained.

Oscar 6 rececives signals betwecen 145.9 and 146 mhz and
retransmits thew in the serment 29.45 to 29.55 mhz on Monday,
Thursday and Saturday nights. : :

Oscar 7 .in mcde A receives signals between 145.85 and
145.95 and retransmits them between 29.45 to 25.55 mhz. In
mode B input frequencies are between 432.125 and 432.175 and
the outvut dowm link frequencies are between 145.975 mhz.
Oscar 7 operates every nisht and uses the above two modes on
altcrnate nichts. E e A

A1l the above info is for the evenin passes only howvever
this is where most ol the activity is and it wiil give you .all
the dope you require to get started un the satellites providing
you hove 'AR' -- and you should all have that.
