Northern Branch, Noteg. -
The September meeting of the Northern Branch was held,
as usual, at the Bourke St. Civil Defense rooms beginning at
8.12 pm. Brian Yeoman VK77BY was in the chair and 28 members
were present. Apologies w.re received from Joe VK74GI,
Norman VK7NR, John VK7JV and Graham VK7ZGT. A visitor Ted
Lockwood, was welcomec to the meeting.
Sympathy was extended to Mike VK?ZNW on the passing away of
his father.
The meeting was reminded of the proposed visit to the
Zxaminer in mid October and reminded that members would be
nceded at the next meeting. TFour gcoutgroups have approach-
ed Mike VK7ZWW regarding the Jamboree of the Air and offers
of help from arateurs would be appreciated. Danny VK7ZDA
reports that the equipment store has fibre-glass P.C.B. for
sale in various sizes at cheap prices and also has packets
of transistors (audio, RF and H.F. power) for sale at rid-
iculous prices.
The 1975 Amateur call book is available through the
branch at #1.50.
Members are reminded that donations to Federal Funds
are still regquired and the reasons for these are set out
in last months Amateur Radio.
The meeting told of a ;ro;osal to hold a wine & Cheese
tasting evening in February and following discussion Frank
VK7ZFR offered the use of hig house for this function.
Members are reminded thatinstead of a December meeting
there will be the usual barbeque. The venue of this will be
notified at a later date.
The film afternoon was held on Saturday 27th September
and all who =ttended this functicn enjoyed themselves and
certainly there wasg much laughter a* times. The attendance
was a little disappointing but I assume there were many
football fans among the branch. The ladies are to be spec-
ially thanked for ;roviding afternoon tea and the children
must have enjoyed it ag there was very little fool left
when they had finished. Thanks to Frank YMorse for provid-
ing the projector and sareen and showing the films for us,
also thanks to Wally VKZZWX for the organisation. All hope
there will be another show later on.

HF Notes
Conditions have varied ~reatly during the past few weeks
with some good openings at times en 20 & 15 metres, most of
the listening has been during the evenings.
Those of you who have not yet worked Burma can now turn
your attention elsewhere as amateur radio and even the poss-
ession of gear to build amateur equipment has been banned in
that country, I guess they are now fully liberated Hi.
A rare country that will be activated during October will
be 3CO 3CI Annobon Approx 02 degrees south 06 degrees East.
«oin the gulf of Guinea.
15 metres has been open for short periods on most days,
JA's with W's to a lesser degree. YK2VE was worked around
0300 at good strength.
20 metres again provided most of the activity this month.
CW has been reasonabl y good with DX available when the phone
portions appear to be flat which proves the point that AI is
still the most reliable form of communication if one wants to
get through(Growls from the Zmen)
Most continents agailable on CW, the Scandinavean contest
produced some nice DX amongst which was 0X and JWS5,
20 Metre phone produced between 0400/0800z XJ5, VQ9SS, ZEI,
zs2, KL7., dJws5, G, ¥YS, XE, ZP, plus the usual W and J's.
Between 0800/I200 conditions have been most interesting
with some very strongDX popping up from all guarters. GW3AX
came through at II30 58. and 0 X3DL 589 at I200z 9M2 and
VS6 where just as strong om SSB~during this time on thred”
evenings last week.
40 metres has been good during the evenings if you listen
through the JA grm.
80 metres CW DX has been reasonable most weekends after
I000 with the usual crop of short haul phone stations readily
available.

VHF NOTES
Orce more there is 1ittle to report. As a result of
an a'vertisement by VK2ZNW in Amatour Radio I had a ieteor
Scatter ccntact with him on 14/9/75. Reports of "Mexico"
-~ were exchanged. Almost every Sunday morning on 52,050
(and other frequencies, editor) have been heard pame
Amateurs Rag Chewing across town but no call signs could
be recognised.
Eight logs were returned for the Athol Johnson Contst,
, full details and the winner will be announced in the next
- Bulletin.
Two Metres has been a little more active although
- few VK7'S took advantage of the opening early in the month
when two metres was open all weekend. Kevin VK7ZAH worked
VK3'S: Z9Y and ZUR and LT on two metres. SS5B,Channel Four
was also useable for most of tne weekend.

Trouble with biro stains - methylated spirits is an
excellent solvent. If the stain is large soak repeatedly
in a saucer of clean methylated spirits, launder or dry
clean.
Reg's gsuit coat is now quite stain free after a biro leaking
in the pocket.

NOTES ON NICADS '
As used ir kP202 Hand Helds.
1a New cells should be individually flattened before fitting
to equipment. (electrically not physically) ’
2. ~'These cells are best charged at 40-45 MA for 14 Lours.
(see circut below) This actually returns 140% or the
power consumed from the cell.
s If your memory is bad you should build a vimer into
the charger vecause overcharging will eventually cause
enough gas pressure inside the cell to cause it to
split and pour its insides out. A nice mess it is
inside your KEN.
4. If the state of charge of the cells is unknown a 10
hour charge is recommended.
5. Cells can be charged much faster if desired but unless
you have a device fitted to the charger to prevent
overchargeit is not recommendeds
6. A life. of 250 charge/dlscharge cycles can be expected
from the cells.
