QRM Comment
The beginning of another term for changes in Branch Office Bearers
and for QRM the pause until a new Editor can be elected. I would
like to say on behalf of all, our sincere thanks to John VK 7 CCC
for his tremendous job and effort in the production of an above
standard magazine during his term as Editor. To those who partic...
ipate by submitting articles, helping to pack, wrap and sort, our
sincerest thank you. Without all the behind the scene helpers this
could not be done. I would also like to thank especially Joe Rickter
who handles the main job of QRM and that is the printing of it.
Thanks Joe.
will be wondering at receiving two QRM's in the same month, well
the answer of course is that we want to stop the knockers and have
QRM published and mailed by the last day of the month for the
preceeding months issue. John has set a hard path to follow but
with your help I am sure it will be followed and hopefully branch
out to wider horizons.

DIVISION TREASURER'S RLPQRTFQR_ 1978
The past year's books again show a small surplus. It bas been
suggested that the Division should make a profit from book sales.
The Council has decided to provide a service to members rather
than make a profit.
The inflated balance of previous years has been reduced by changing
the method of new subscription processing. This will eliminate
the pro-rata hold over of subs from one year to the next for 1979.
For 1979 we have a major committment in the insurance cover for
members but F.E. will now fund the Federal Convention expenses for
an Alternate Federal Councillor.

HOME COLOUR FIJM & PRINT PROCESSING
by Peter E. Harison VK 2 NPM
This series of articles ia not intended to indicate professionalism fa,.___,,
any way, but is intended for the amateur who wishes to experiment in
this field. Some of the statements could quite validly be questioned
by professionals.
It is widely believed, and indeed is promulgated in advertising
material that extremely expensive equipment is necessary in order to
achieve accurate results. This is correct but it is also a matter of
interpretation of accuracy Nobody expects absolute perfection unless
a high cost is involved. What is not conveyed is that it is quite
possible and relatively easy to produce quite acceptable and pleasing
results in colour work without getting involved in thousands of dollars
'outlay. (Editors Note: Very good samples have been received)
The following information is the writers opinion on how this can be
achieved. Some of the information has been gleaned from articles in
different magazines and some of it is as a result of the writers own
experimentation,
Considerable outlay was involved in the purchase of different types of
developing chemicals, papers, films, specialised tanks, thermostatic
facilities and various analysing systems to obtain correct colour
balance. The result was total frustration and repeated failure. This
carried on for months but so much had been spent I felt that I had to
continue.
An article in a magazine caused me to have a complete re-think. Think
in terms of normal black and white processing using different chemicals
with some minor modifications. INCONSISTENCY IS THE COLOUR PRINTERS
NIGHTMARE. It is necessary to be consistent.
The next article indicates purchasing requirements and then the system
used by the writer, with as previously stated, quit;e reasonable
results ..
Throughout this publication errors appear the reason is that the
forefinger on the right and left hand have no learnt to spelll!!!

In last months issue 0f QRN we mentioned the Amateur Radio Action
DX Award for Novices was won by a VK 3 Novice. This report is now
.official - it ves won by none other than the Managing Editor of 'ARA'
Len VK 3 NLS, ho has now written to me, in reply to my query "Who won
the Award, and when will details be published."
Two weeks ago, I had the greatest thrill since I have been on the air.
Some of the older Amateurs will remember the FIRST EVER Broadcast
Station to come on the air in the USA - it was KDI PSBURGH.
I remember lisi:;ening to their short wave transmissions from KDKA about
end 0£ 1928 on a Home Brew 1 Tube Regenerative Detector radio.
However asked was set up for me by Carl W7YQ of Sun City, Arizona,
on 1O Metres with Roy W7Zw, also of Sun City.
might ask "what is so exciting about that?", only the fact that
Roy, who is no 84 years of age, and President of the Sun City Radio
Club, was the First Engineer to put KDKA on the Air, in November 1921.
Roy told me he got his licence in 1914 and his original call was 3QT.
He is going to write to me and send some photos. A wonderful exper--
ience in deed! Note: I would welcome items of interest from others
inclusion in this column.

MODI FI CATIONS AND I MPROVEMEtlTS TO THE KYOKUTO
• )l
by Craig Maitland VKSZA and Neil Abraham VK5ZJA
This is the first in a series ~f articl~s written mainly for Kyokuto
- owners, tut applicable to many other modern ,Japanese 2 metre FM
transceivers. These minor modifications, when applied to the Kyokuto,
will further ininrove an alreadv versatile unit.
MODI FICAT'ION 1:#:- IMPROVING 1ST. I. F. RESPONSE
The first modification is one which is aimed at in1i,rnvinq the receiver
section vith respect to weak, off.frequencv, or heavilv deviated
signals.
As with rany other modern narrow-band units the standard Kykuto mute
and audit svsteri can be susceptible to "popping" under the above
conditiom, the severity depending on the way the receiver was alianed,
Most amaturs tend to tune their newly-acquired units to ensure maximum
sensitiviy. The way it is usually done is to get a weak, steady signal
source an. peak the receiver for maximum signal strength on the meter,
or for ma; irum quieting. Whilst this may improve the basic sensitivity
_,...___
for an 1mniodulated carrier, i.n tile Kyokuto any reasonably high
modulation now causes the mute to close, as the I.F. bandwidth is now
very narrow, with shape 1 ikened to a church steeple as in fig 1. Notice
also that the peak is not on centre frequency due to mismatch of the
16.9 Mz {lter.
So, if you've fiddled with the receiver in your Kyokuto, read on!
The facto y has partially overcorne this rroh 1 em by their method of
alif!nn~ent, which Cii_n only be described as a fiddle to cover up a basic
design fafllt. They do not tune the receiver for maximum sensitivity. but
for mini um distortion on a Noise and. Distortion Meter, with the
required leviation applied from a Signal Generator.
This has :he effect of broadening the I. F. resoonse bv detuninq the
associabd transformers to match into the filter, but the sensitivity
decreases, A standard Kyokuto, as received from the factory, was swept
on a spec:rum analyser and)gave a picture as in fig 2. Still obviously

If the I.F. is swept -carefully with a good spectrum analyser or sweep
~enerator whilst aligning it is possible to 9et a· symmetric11l response
as in figure 3, but as you can see it is still far from satisfactnry,
having snewhere near a 10 dB hole in the middle. All of these oroblems
are due to the incorrect matching of the mixer drain coil to the first
IF filter (16,9 MHz). By correctly matching this filter to the mixer
output a response as in fig 4 can be obtained, This shape is ideal as
you can see, with 20 kHz passband, less than 2 d ripple and very
symmetrical,
Matching of the filter can be done 1n several different ways. all
achieving similar results. We believe the easiest, quickest effective
way is to fit a small active matching circuit, Simply a source-follower
circuit, it allows the filter to "look" into a low impedance source,
while the drain of the mixer can operate into a "high Z" load, enabling
this coil to be peaked for maximum gain.
This modification has been carried out to many units, all with very
gratifying results. The parts cost about $1-50 and are available from
the Equipment Supply Committee. Any competent amateur can do the
modification in about 15 - 20 minutes. See the circuit below, fig 5.

METHOD OF MODIFICATION
Disconnect power leads etc.
Slip cover off the Kyokuto. undo 4 screws holding the receiver board
down and tip the board over to expose the tracks,
Cut track between Q2 drain and the filter input - use a small, sharp
knife or blade.
Solder the coupling capacitor, FET & resistors to the underside of the
pcb, keeping all leads as short as possible. Check that you have the
correct pin connections for the FET which you use as they are not all
identical.
The +9V rail is picked up from one of the 47 ohm decoupling resistors,
Replace the board after carefully checking all \•iork and replace all
leads and plugs,
Turn on, find a weak but steady signal and re-peak coils l5 ,- L6 and L7 ..
no fancy test equipment required.
The 1ncrP.ase in gain due to this modification is about 10 dB, You will
now have a flat bandpass. a receiver as sensitive as the best and be far
less troubled by heavily deviated signals, If any popping now exists, it
is purely over-deviation from the transmitting station.
Unfortunately, rigs received into Australia are not adjusted to a
standard deviation, but vary from one brand to another, If the deviation
is too high, speaking back from the microphone is no cure. The average
will be lower but the occasional peaks can still go outside the passband
of the receiver. If your deviation is too high, adjust it prooerly.
Also, check the bandwidth of your 455 kHz filter. Some early sets had a
April 1979 Page 11
+/- 6 Khz filter installed. If this is the case, you may be better
off by changing to an 8 or 10Khz filter.
