"AMATEUR-RADIO. " Some doubt seems to exist in the minds of some of our
more recen members. concerning "Amateur Radio". The sub to. this
Journal is included in your Annual Subscription. The reason you do
not receive. it as soon as the Monthly Bulletin is because. it takes
considerably longer to have your name placed on the Circulation List
    as said Iiis-b is always sent'to "A. R, " at least a Eionth . ill, advance. .
The sam'e applies to Me. mbers who have had their names deleted as- a ' .
result of no'n-paymeht of Subscriptions,, it takes a while f.o.r it'^o get
golng again^ This latter one could be avoided by the prompt'payment
of^subscriptions, to say nothing of a . lot less work for^yours truly?'-- --
    Also-'considerably less expense on the postage side. " -'- ---. - -

     TECHNICAL: 100 Y^at-b 50 . Omi DUMt.lY LOAD. A Dummy Load can be a most
useful adJune to . -uhe eq.uipment in your station. The^following is^a^
very simple, low cost dummy load designed' to cope wi-fch 100 watts of RF
     ©tl'EpU.t.
CONSTRUCTION. Obtain two brass, circular plates of diameter about 3".
flrill a hole in one plate large enough to take the centre of a standard
chassis'mounting coaxial fitting. Around this hole drill holes^in the
appropriate places -fco take the fas.tening: . screws to hold the fitting to
the plate. ^Drill a hole in the centre-o"f the other brass plate -bo
make^a snug . fit for a quarter inch brass rod. This piece of^. quarter^
inch toass^rod should be a little less than. 2" in length,. drill-a. lro. ie...·
in one end of the rod so tha-fc the centre conductor _of -the coaxial
coimector makes a snug'fit in i't. It is a good i&a to. drill a hole
at right angles so that solder can be flowed to hold -the centre
conductor firmly in place. Solder the brass rod'in its hole in the
'bottom''brass-plate. " ^ The brass plates are kept rigid and properly spaced
by tlie use of^ two inch insula-bors between them. Then divide . th.e^..a±r.c.iMi
ference of each brass plate into ten equally spaced sections, ^make
a'small slot in each plate at each of these'markings or divisions, just
large:enough. to accept the wire tail of a. resistor. ^Connect a 500 OHM
     10. Watt n.on-inductive-'-type wire-wound resist. or. betwe. en eac'h . of_. --bh.e . ten ..
pairs of slots in the brass pla-fces and solder_the. leads^in^. The ^ob is
now done, except for con. nect. ing the dummy load to -bhe rig .. by coaxrral
     cable. 'De.spite the use of wire-wound resistors, ^the reactive^ompon-
e'rit has been found to''be quite low. It is. claimed' tha.t the VSWR is
     1 to . 1 up to 21 Megacycles, and only 1. 2 to 1 at 30 Megacycles*
