I have often enquired from members of long standing in the Institute of the
personality of the average Amateur. To generalise, what does he want fssom the Ins'titu-te ?
Why is he like he is ? Vttia-b is he prepared, -bo do himself ?
Perhaps some may call me foolish or even op-bimi-s'tic when I say I think I can generalise in
'bhe answer^
Besides being a. person wi-fcb a prao-fcical bend the Araa'teur is also a dreamer - how many of us
have wistfully wished WQ coald have su.ch a.nd such a Transceiver 5 or work su. cli and such a
coun-try, and so on. - -then such things as finaiice or o-ther commi-fcmen-fcL. -throw a spanner in the
works and. we como back -bo r ali'-tyo Sometimes in -the case of -fche Ins-fcitute it falls o.n the
shoulders cf your Council to face the reality, to mp.be the decision, v/he'ther favourn'ble or
not ~ in all cnses the decision reached has "to be considern'bion •to 'the whole and not •the
individual - hence -the o^d. saying " One can-fc satisfy all the people e'fcc,,"
Being 3. dreamer the Amateur has his frustrating momen-fcs, as also does Councilo
He might grow s. little cold on "fchnt special projec-b or even •the hobby as a, whole - only
•to bre^ak forth with renewed gusto at a la.-fcer d.ate» Individually this does net matter -
vri-th Council, 'being oollec-fcive, -this does no-t happen as everyone does not get -the "mood"
at; the same -time o
Lastly; as in all orgp. ni sations, there are "the workers and the memTsers - the ratic
is usually alarmingo When n. worker drops oa-fc a small mirF'. cle happens -
another is found,
no dou'bl; if all the workers dropped ou-b a similar numbe would s-bill be founda
No man. is indispens.Ale — please remember •that, also, if n fev/ more " miracles " happened
how much lighter the lo<?.d would, bo on the workers,,

Half Vfave Vs Full Wave cnn-binueds
The following-relp. -bio ships summarise some importan-fc parame-fcers of rec-bifi.er circuit
The figures-given are for no - load condi-tions, and condenser input, filtero Under load,
of courEe;, output will drop, depending on fil-fcer and load impedance, and on vnlve or diode
or transfnrmer resistnnceo

I have arranged -the da-ta in two differen-b ways "to emphasize -fclie (iis-tinc-b charac-beris-bics
of each circu.it, relative to constp-nt input or' constp.n-t outpu.-t. You can see •that for the

each rectifier, l3u-b for the same do 0« outpu-b vol-tage, -the bridge, or doubler have' half the

confusion, no-t least amongst experienced electronics men. I sadly confess to having been
a victim myself, . but I .^m comfor-bed by -the fact -bha-t a certain (nameless) or'ganisa-fcion

''here are a number of occurrences in the last week or so
which are of interest- (I hope?}
l.<Iirstly, \'ve h&ve two new callsi^ns in the Southern zone after
the issuing of the July examination results, (which ^ere very latej
these being V;'':7^i-D; David i. iarsland and VKT^BJ; Barry Riddell who
have been very fortunate because the V,H. F. activity has been
extremely hi,,h of late. As at the time of writing there were .'approx^
-imately twenty five stations , thirteen of which are mobiles, ,
active on the nett frequency of l?5:055T!c/s*
•This increased activity has brought to notice that there are
at least tv<o new communication paths available, one down to
nuon^llle where 7TA and T^!.. ;; have been wor-kBdwith quite good
signals being evident, on'' one occasion 7ZAP mobile in Neviitown
worked 7^--l-i with l?-P. signals each way, on that. same evening
he was slsoheard In o'bher parts of the City but due to Q.. H. h,
on the band inthese areas tv^o Viiay contacts, were not rnai'e by these
chaps* The other oppening was towards Port Arthur where Charles
7KS heard 72AI in contact with a local station at quite good
strength, but due to local ;.:;:RT, i'(namely two new HAl'. IS) in Dave 's
shack two way co ..••i;^''.. rations were not established, but no doubt
it will be proved at a later date,
EOrtTHEUN ZONE
I. iy spies tell there has been accute lack of activity on
2M Upithere so this could account for the nil amount of
news coming down our way, so lets hear from you soon eh |,
well thats all for this month chaps, maybe ^e'll have some
more next; month if we are kept informed.
