" Having been married to a Radio " Ham " for over 40 years, I have come -bo -the
conclusion that "hams" are not quite, as other men, and •tha'b certain q.ualities are

If he is on the air it is impossible -to get any "Hem" -bo a meal 5 he will listen

I have managed over -the years to pick up some of the jargon used by "hams",
most of our guests being fellow border-line cases, and known only by letters and
numbers. For instance, I know longer think -there is some-tliing wrong wi-fch my cooking
when -they are discussing "feed'baok"o The moving up and down of KoC's to ge-b out of
the mush "s no longer Du-tch^ but in spite of all -the talk of fine "business and 73
(or 88), what; really denotes the addic-fc is the mo'bile s-tage, when he can no longer
venture outside with.ou-b his radio so that he can contact the "ham" he is visiting

(he will be visiting no one bu-b a "ham") -to tell him when he leaves -the house, when
he -turns a corner or goes over or under a bridge e-bc^ thus his fellow victim knows
exac-fcly where he is until he is right ou-bside the house o Of course in -this way one
could say we always know where our men are,
These are but a few of -the hazards of life wi-th a "ham" 5 perhaps we are no worse

           CRYSTAL CHECK POINT ON 145 Mcs By VK6MM (D? o A. Bulle-bin April 1966)
With -the idea of establishing. a 2 metre MS. net for home s-fca-tion use, a first require-
men-fc was for a simple 'but reasona'bly accura'be freq.uency check poin-t somewhere in -the
144 mcs band. Some crystal calibrators will give a usable signal a-fc this freq.uency,
but I dou'bt whe-ther majiy amateurs possess such an animalo I wanted something that I

could have handy and switch on when I needed it.
By choosing a frequency of 145 mcs i-t is possible to use a 5 mcs crystal which
may Tse zero beat with WV and rnul-tiplied by 29 -to give -the req.uired check poin-fc a-b
145 mcs.
The popular grid-pla-te oscillator with series tuning of the pla-be circuit -to
145 "1GS gives useful signal input to my receiver wi-fchou-t -the need for special coup-
ling, i. e. the oscillator is jus-fc left running on -the bench a few fee-t away and a
signal is readily detectable in -the receiver. It is not intended to Tse used as an
alignment source Tout only as a frequency check.
I found it possi'ble -to 'beat the -third harmonic with WWV on 15 mcs so that a
frequency difference of only 1 cycle or so existed, which represents an accuracy of
10 cycles or so a-fc 145 mcs, entirely sa-fcisfac-tory for -the present purpose,,
            Ini-tial warm up drif+. of -the par-fcicular crys-bal I use is approxima-tely 10 cycles
 on the fundamental Tsut s-fcabilizes af-her a few minu-fces,
If the idea of a net on this frequency ca-bches on, such a device will be useful
no-t only for getting trs, nsmit-fcers on frequency, but -to se-fc the -tuning of the normal
home s-fcation receiver whi3ie working elsewhere in -bhe shaok.
The only componen-t of any consequence is -the 5 os crys±al, although a 2. 5 mcs
crystal vrould probably also be satisfac-bory.

several unfor'tuna'tes in -the Domain area.

These fox hunts are a great idea, and as no SF gear is required, -they os.n be
