EDITORIAL
The ca-bas-brophe which struck sou-fch. ern Tasmania on February 7-th., 1967, with it's:
as so ci ate d, sigh-ts and sounds, is something tha-t those of us who saw it will not
find. easy -to forget. The most s-bar-tling though-b -tha-t s-brikes us, is tIie fact that
disaster can. and. did. hit our beau-tiful islandL, v/hich many of us had pB eviously re-
gard-ed. as immune. I-b did. happen and, could happen again. Unfor-tuna-fcely, memory has a
quaint -trick of fad-ing wi-bh -the passage of -time, and I feel -that it will be necess-
ary in -the future, to consciously avoid' slipping back into our usual apathy.
Through 'WICEN we not only facili-ta-fce essen-bigl -braffic, but we can also offer
very real. sympa-bhy and compassion -bo the stricken people. The comfor-fc of knowing
that there is some form of communication -bo the "outside" world obviously played
q^ui-fce a part in boosting morale in devasta'fced are as $ and. I think realisation o£
th. is fac-fc gives its own reward.
D7ICEN is important - we know that now, if v/e didn't "before. Consequently, it
is up to us -bo pu-b aside personal grievances and feelings, and contrilsu-fce all we can.
-to make WIDEN a more efficien-b and capable organization.
In the' meantime, congra-ts. on a really FB effort from all -those connected witli.;
WIGEN — the operators, -the frequency olearers, the equipment loaners, the runners
(who spent a lo-fc of energy running to shops), and of course the MEAL & CUP ofi TEA
ge-b-bers, who catered- extremely well for insatiable appe-bi-fces, not forgetting anyone:
who. may not be covered by the. alsove-mentioned.

NEWS 1]S BRIEF
At the time of writing the USS Mills is in port. Thia ship has on board at least
one amateur, V/B6CIN, who while in Antarctica operated KC4USX. After leaving poirtt o n
21st Feb., this ship will -be active on amateur bands.
Recently, quite a. decent Aurora display was o bserved in Hobar-t, marking the
return of high sun spot, activity. While 20mx suffers as a result of this activity,
some goo d F2 layer DX should be found on the higher bands o ver the next few ye-ara.
No Ws the time to dig out that high-band gear and blow thg dust offl
Quite a comprehensive report on one of -the emergency networks was received
from Graeme Wilson of M-fc, Seymour. Our -thanks, Graeme, for taking the trouble to
send. -this repor-fc in.
VHP MOTES
-Sot very much to report this month chaps, but of the little there is, a couple
of items are exciting and one is interesting.
Firstly Mike, mC told .me ..recently, .that he and .Reg, KL do a little snooping
.
around the VHP bmds on an Eddys-bone receiver fipom Mt. Barrow and that a few weeks
af^er Chris-fcmas they heard 4X4YB an& another • s-fca-bion in Israel in QSO on 6mx.
Unfortunately, at the time of writing I do not-have any further details, but believe
that Eeg is writing to the gentleman concerned for•confirmation of this. On 2/1/6?
a JA was heard in Hobart by ZKJ, also oh 6mx. This, coupled with the appearance of
the Aurora Australis during the past week means -that the old F2 layer is coming
into play again. If activity in Europe, Japa^i etc has increased at the same rate as
in Australia over the past years since the last of the F2 openings, then there
should be^DX^to^end DX. The other, ZAH in Ulverstone was sort of wkd on
several stations in Hobart during the emergency. " '"' " 73^ YFeedBack.

BALANCED MIXER/PRO.'DUCT. DETECTOR. . For the OM who is homebrewing an SS£ -transceiver,
here is -the ul-tima-fce in economy of par-fcs and hair--bearing. The functions of trans-
mi-b-fcer mixer and receiver product de'tec-fcor can be com'bined in a very small package
with this arrangement.
The circuit suggestion was planted by a -technical ar-ticle in 'A. R. ' some years
ago, and briefly employed solely as a produc-t detector by one of the authors (G., J»)
sooh after i-b appeared. Due to difficulties in ma-fcching the input impedance of the
diode bridge, when trying -to modify a 455kcs. I, F., it was soon discarded in favour
of a more conventional. tube. type product detector.
However, when an I»Fo of 5mcs. or 9 mcs. is used after a crystal filter, "the
problem of winding an I.. F. -transformer -bo match -the network is greatly simplified
The primary v/inding is wound as would -be expected, while -the secondary is bifilar
woumd. over -the -top of i-b to give a 3sl •turns ra-fcio and thus the ma'tching is achieved:!.
Conversion voltage BFO or VFO is applied, to -the effective cen-bre-tap of the bifilar
wound secondary, which will give 'balanced input to the bridge. The balanced, bridge
output will ensure that on -fcra-tismi-b, both the IF and the conversion oscillator
frequencies are suppressed. The ou-fcpu-fc -fcransformer has a bifilar primary, and an
overal'l -turns ratio of l. ;5. into the transmitter driver tube.
One point perhaps not made qui-be clear earlier is -that on receive, the ou-fcput
from the BFO or carrier crystal as the case may ^e, is fed -bo the diode bridge;
while on -fcraxismit, the VPO is fed'into it to produce the required, resultant opera-t-
ing frequency at the transformer secondary.
By way of- warning, two SSB transceivers are on the drawing board. — single
band units, intended for mobile use. An all-tube version running abou-b 8 wa-t-fcs D. C.
input and. a solid s-ta-te; version, running around 250 milliwat-ts. Each will use this'
balanced, mixer/produo-fc de-bector. For the benefi-fc of " have a go " types, the oircyi-fe
of the 8 wat-t version which has been tes-fced. in sections but not as a complete unl-b,
will be submitted with little commen-fc later.
