1985 3 Day Horse event radio comms by NW Amateurs photos of members of the NW Branch of the WIA around 1985 conducting comms for a 3-day equestrian event at Wynyard I have included a couple of photos that were taken with my 35mm camera at two different 3 day horse events at Wynyard on Bill King’s property off Reservoir Drive. I have named the amateurs in the photos, John is one of them, I hope these might help you put faces to names you might have heard of or show you what some of us looked like with hair or without grey hair !! These 3 day events were a pretty big thing at the time, they even closed the Bass Highway and detoured traffic around Reservoir Drive and back out Deep Creek Road onto the Highway so the horses and riders could use land on both sides of the Highway and race across the Highway as well. The reason the group of amateurs were there was some of the hams from the North West Branch of the Tasmanian Division of the Wireless Institute of Australia were providing communications from various spots on the course. John Duncombe was the Branch’s WICEN coordinator and he had arranged and organised things for us hams at the 3 day events. Before the first 3 day event the was held, John travelled from Penguin and picked me up from my home in Cooee , and we went to Wynyard and walked the full course with someone from the 3 day event group ( don’t remember who ). This was so we could work out where best to place our guys ( hams ). AR mention the evet from AR Magazine 1986 June page 52 - DEVIL NEWS from the NW Branch We have been told that when we do the communications for the horse trials next year, we will have to be on our best behaviour as HRH Princess Ann will be competing. (We may have to wear a collar and tie for the occasion!). The horse trials, held at Wynyard, proved to be a successful day. The operators provided emergency communications and score transfer for the event and was the biggest event covered by the Club to this date. The course has 31 fences for the senior competitors to jump and the novice competitors had 26 fences to jump. There were 12 operators used, 11 at field stations with one at a central base station receiving messages from the field stations. Members who participated were VK7s ZPT John Duncombe SK; ZHA now XR Andrew Hay; ZBT Greg Stammers; EG Noel Davies; AX Tony Bedelph; WL Bill Lester SK; ZAP became KAP Andrew Perkins; OL Owen Langham; DC Dave Cleland; WJ Jack Wright SK; KDR John Webster and ZRD Robert Duncombe ZPTs Johns son Hi Again Eric.
