ANNUAL REPORT
1972 - (973
PRESIDENT'S REPORT 1972/73
The year under review has in my opinion, been’one of the most successful
from a technical angle in the history of Amateur Radio. The functioning
of the AQ6 Satellite, and the subsequent success of that progressive band
_of operators who have taken the opportunity of working through it, is
probably the ultimate attainment in our r hobbye Hearty congratulations to
all. ‘those who are participating. , :
Some of our members are experimenting with slow scan TV and Teletype.
These are by no means ordinary and our congratulations go to them,
Early in the year saw a definite slump in the apparent activity in the Hobart
_ Avea, However, I am pleased to report that there is a definite trend towards
bigger and better attendances at meetings and I hope that this trend will
continue in 1973.
We have had a financial set back in that the rent for our "Home" at 147 Idiverpool
_ Street has been increased to the point where it is no longer economical for us
' to stay». I am pleased to report that two of our old stalwarts in Tom Alien
and Ted Beard are being successful in negotiating at least.a temporary !: _.
which is on the ground floor, This is very good as a lot of us are netting’
. too old to climb those three flights of stairs,
The Northern and Northwestern Zones continue to be extremely active and have
good attendances at their meetings and again congratulations are in order to
the willing bands of organise1s who work so hard to make them a success.
After being on Council or holding some executive position since about 1947,
I am reluctant to have to report that owing to pressure of business, I will
not be able to nominate for Council this year, In any case, I think it is
about time some of our younger members were given a chance to run our Institute,
I cannot let this opportunitygo by without publicly thanking Mike and Jenny
Knott who until recently, orgaikised and printed our monthly Bulletin,
Thank you Mike and Jenny for a fine job well done,
Thank you to the members of Council and the other Office Bearers of the
Tasmanian Division, and thank you to all those people who have helped
during the year by doing something to make our Institute go.
I wish the incoming Council every success in 1973
(Signed) Es J. Cruise VK7EJ- .
President, W.I.A. Tas, Division
HERE
The northern Zone has again had a very successful year, The meetings have
been well attended by an average of twenty nine members, A trial programme of
lectures, both by members and visitors on subjects of general interest,
rather than specialised technical aspects of amateur radio, has been well
received,
Other activities of the Zone have been to operate VK7NZ at a YMCA hobbies |
exhibition, to originate the Divisional Sunday broadcast by a new technique
of using the repeater and taking relays from this for other HF and VHF bands,
A mmber of FM yeseno fox hunts were held in the evenings.
The FM repeater has had its first full year of operation and contimes to
provide an easy means to tie together members in the State,as Stations in
Hobart and on the NW coast can now regularly be heard. DX working also adds
interest during abnormal propogation conditions. A peak in activity resulted
when a clearance to use it during the RD contest was obtained, A change will
shortly be made to a new transmitter frequency based on recommendations resulting
-from a conference in Albury last July, I was fortunate to be able to represent
_the State at this conference and made many useful contacts.
The Zone for the first time has had two of its members as divisional councillors,
they have been able to attend most council meetings especially since. the
venue was changed to Oatlands. It is because. of. the greater interest in
divisional affairs that the Zone's A. G.if. has been postponed to April so as
the outcome of Council elections will be mown before our own office bearers
are elected,
-.In May, a clubroom fund raising venture was started with 7JV in charge.
_ Progress has been Zood, the latest means of extracting money from the public
“is to be a raffle which should be in operation by the time you read thise
Possible sites for clubrooms were investigated and with a. little more in the
bank, we will be in a position to press the matter further.
The Zones general funds have shown a very healthy increase. due mainly. to new
and disposal equipment sales and an agreement with an Insurance Company , where
by members can receive discounts on most policies, brings in a regular
commission,
For the future, I believe the Zone will continue to prosper, but this next year
will possibly see changes as a result of the A.G.M, and a lightening of the
meeting room situation, ;
I wish to thank ny fellow office bearers and the members. for. making the
“year such a success.

Store Activities 1972,
During the year, trading was limited to VK3 Div components and Neosid parts
onlye Wo worthwhile disposals were tendered for, ‘The practise of groups
of members tendering for equipment was popular during 1972 so the Store did
not enter the competition, Components such as Transistors were very popular |
and sales high. The VIA. Ties, Tie Bars and Badge sales were virtually nil,
obviously nobody likes to advertise that they belong to the Institute any more,
There are several items being "stored" at the moment, these will be disposed
of during 1973.
On behalf of the Equipment Store Committee, I would like to thank all those
people who patronised the Store during 1972 and we hope you will contime
‘to this year,
I would like to advise members that due to personal commitments, I will not
be able to continue on the Committee during 1973. My thanks go to the other
members of the Committee, Ieicester Hibbert, VK7ZIH and Graham West for their
help and assistance,

QSL Bureau Activities - Year Ending st_1973
January + 3tet
As was noted in the previous report, the decline in surspot activity appears
to be responsible for a smaller number of QSL cards going through the Bureau,
The trend has contimed into the current year and a total handling of 12,135
cards is some 5,500 down on the total of 17,712 for 1971/72, ° The” ‘comparison
between the past two years and the all time record high year 1970/71 when
22,391 cards were handled, seems to clinch the supposition.
The cost structure appears to have stabilised for outward despatch at or near
0.46 cents per card and it is pleasing to report that the accumulated funds
of the Bureau at the end of the year of report stood at 360-29 which will allow
the purchase, long overdue, of a set of letter scales. (Since inheriting the
QSL Bureau the firms coarse chemical balance has been used)»
Thanks, are very gratefully tendered to Snow, VK7CH, who did such a fine job as
Bureau custodian during my absence Overseas in May and June of the year of
report. He certainly kept things moving.
In common with most other honorary office holders in the Division, I have been
the recipient of various grouches from members outside the Hobart area,
In response to these grumbles, I have on several occasions, tried to explain
that I am employed as a senior Research Scientist involved with a comprehensive
“ second place to ny job. and of coursé a ‘modicum of Leistize’ time, not enough of
‘which is spent 'on air', I can only reiterate “that IT ‘devote as much time to
the Bureau work as is possible and this ‘will always be a variable governed by
“my work load at a given time, Under the circumstances hence obtaining, whilst
I am willing to contime as QSL Manager, I would be more than happy to relinguish
the position and make more work for my successor by being able to get 'on air!
far more. However, should no successor be forthcoming, then I'would ask for
a ‘little understanding in approach | of the. grumblers of the past years
“AS summary of inward/outward cards for the pest three years “Appears below:
1972/73 Invards 7, 011 Outward $ Bae
1971/72 ‘Inward: 10,778 = Outward’ «6,934
1970/71 Inward 12,871 - Owiwards = 95 520
Pre sorting of batches of cards for outward sransmission has, in the main,
been good with few notable exceptions, As has been indicated previously pre
sorting keeps things moving along much more smoothly and with much less
‘expenditure of time, The current trend of some Overseas Bureaus to split up
into smaller units is not a welcome one from our point of view ~ the latest
to do this is the PY Bureau which is now split into TEN according to call
areas PY1, PY2 etc.. A spread of this tendency will cause costs of outward
transmission of cards to these. areas .to. increase..probably by a factor of two.
Finally I tender my apologies fot my not attendance at the Annual General
Meeting due to other commitments. L hope that the petty bickering sometimes
near hysterical level, that has been all tonevident of latey will be
superseded by, sotind and” non eto tional thought. prior to the. taking of what
could be most detrimental decisions, A.deep perusal of ‘the Amateur Code ~—
prior.to jumping in 'boots and all! to twist the Division out of shape,
is thoroughly recommended, ‘We are ALL Amateurs. ..
Respectfully tendered,
(Signed) Greg IJchnston, VK7KI

REPORT ON YOUTH RADIO SCHEME 1972
As in the previous year, the main activity of the W.I.A. Y.R.C.S. has centred
on Institute sponsored groups, This has avoided the problems associated with
change of staff in school groups. |
Groups continue to function on Saturday mornings in Hobart, at the WeI,A.
clubrooms and in Launceston at Kings Meadows High School, These groups cater
for about 50-60 young people. :
In addition, a school group operates at Kings Meadows High,
As an adjunct to group activities, we are able to offer assistance to
individuals in schools and other orgenisations requiring extra help, Peaching
aids and ideas for projects were supplied to inquirers from Launceston,
Scottsdale, Georgetown and Queenstown.
Sixteen Junior and Elementary Certificates were awarded to Club metibers and
one member of the Correspondence section of the scheme was. awarded the Senior
Certificate, Se
Once again, the support and liaison interstate has been discouraging. .
A conference was held in Melbourne during the year, however, our State was
not able to be represented, Feedback from this Conference has been minimal,
Updated notes and project ideas have to be compiled by local workers and
publicity materials and suitable test material is non-existant nationally.
Despite these problems, the Y.R.C.S. in Hobart and Launceston is contributing
to the Institute's responsibility for Education and assistance amongst young
people and, whilst Institute membership is not a goal, the increase in student
membership noted should be good insurance for the future,
Thanks to all those who have helped ~ either by direct participation or
'morally', Particularly Lee, VK7RG and his offsiders and Wally VK7ZWX,
I'm sure that they will agree that this is one aveme of Institute service
where you can see a result for your efforts!
