This is the heading of a cerpaign initiated by thc Geelong Amateur Radio . TV
Club, The idea being to prormote the repopulation of the bottom (tunable) portion
of 2 metres, This segment has been badly neglected through the use of reneaters
hy basc stations as a means of working DX.
In Geelong they have started by making VWednesday night a 2 metres on air
activities night and I for one would like to sec our mewbers follow suit,
QR will help by giving preference to any erticle, teclmic:l or otherwise to do
with 2 metres,
See you on air ncxt Wednesday and keen you r he am north you might catch onc

PRODUCT NL#S
Signetics announce a new l.C. ULN2111 for Fil
detection employing linear gating; the device comprises a 3 stage
limiter and a balanced product detector. An outstanding feature
is that only one simple, low cost single-winding coil is required
for tuning. Frequency range is 5 kHz to 50 miz. Output of 0.6V
with a total distortion of less than 1% and a limiting threshold
voltage of L4OO microvolt R.M.S. is typical. I hope to have data»
sheets shortly.

A250 MEZFREQUENCY COUNTIR PART 1
Any amateur who owns or has access to a frequency
counter will realise what an invaluable instrument it is to have
at one's disposal. Through the years I have been lucky to have
reasonable access to a counter when I wanted one, but there were
times when a counter was not available when I needed it. 3ecause
of this situation I started thinking what would be involved in
building one, and so after about nine months the following is the
end result.
The basic counter presented here has a 30 mhz (plus) capability
and has an optional extension to 250 mhz. All digital integrdted
circuits are 7.T.L. (Transistor-Transistor-Logic) with the
exception of the 250 mhz pre-scaler and 30 mhz input pulse shaper
which are £.C.L. (Emitter-Coupled-Logic). A single regulated 45
volt supply powers the complete instrument including the read-out
tubes which are 7 segment filiment type.
Fig.1shows a block diagram of the complete frequency
counter. The input signal is fed into either the 250 mhz pre-
gcaler or the 80 mhz input board via BNC conncctors. If the pre-
scaler is to be used a short co-ox link is placed between the output
of th¢ pre-scaler and the input of the 30 mhz board. If the
signal to be measured is 30 mhz or below it is fed directly into
the 30 mhz input board. After the signel passcs through this
board where it ig shaped, it is passed onto the count gate. This
gate isMopenced® for periods of time accurately determincd by the
zate control circuitry. Output of the count gatc ig then passed
on to the counting decades for counting and displaying. The
crystal oscillator and timebuse chain is vwhet determincs the
length and accuracy of the count gate and uges o 2 mhz crystal, whosc
output ig firgt divided by twvo to give 1 mhz and then divided by
ten 6 times to give o final timebase frequency of 10 z. Thoe
sclected timebase frequency is applicd to tho gate control
circuitry to opcen and cloge the count gate for the required
amount of time. The strobe and rescet pulses also originate from
the gate control circuitry. The counter has alzso the facility to
be able fo display the frequency of which o receiver is tuncd to,
by subtracting the IF frequency (up to 999 khz) from the VRO
frequency, provided the VRO ig on the high gide of gignal frequency.
This displayced frequency is regolved to 1 khz and is part of the
gate control circuitry.

DOER SUPPLY
The power supnly consicts of transformer T1 (12 voltsat
amps), bridge rectifierWIW ond capacitor C6 (2000uf - 25vw). Thcse
components together supply +15 volts to an integrated circuit voltage
regulator. The IC rcgulator (a Fairchild va723) provides a
regulated +5 volts to drive o 283055 serics rcgulator transistor. A
facility of this rcgulator is the shut dowvn of the regulator should
the load currcnt incrcage above o pre-sct level; in thig case 1.8,
amps. Further protection is provided for the counter in the form of
a transistor crow=bar circuit. should the 45 rail voltage rise (due
to IC¢ regulator failure) to a value that would destroy 211 the ICs.
The crow=bar circuit is cct to operate vhen the voltage on 45 volt
rail rises to +5.4 volts., This value is chosen because the mazimum
Vee voltage that can be applied to the ICs is +7 volt and input
voltages to all ICs ig +45.5 volts. On the opcration of the crow-bar
circuit the 2 amp. fusc feeding the IC voltage regulator blows and
removes all voltages from the counter and so saves an cxpensive
replacement of 2ll digital ICs and probably the rcad-out devices.
The circuit of the regulated powver gupply arpears at Fig. 2.
