TEGHN1GAL.
•GHING QUARTZ CRZSTALS. Compiled from various sources by VK7GH
Etching, as applied to crystals, is a process whereby quartz is removed
froiq the. crystal by a chemical reaction 'between the quartz and a suitable
fluoride'etchant,' and'is noriaally accomplished by immersing the crys'bal in a
solu.tion of water and ammonium bifluoride for a controlled period of time. In.
•the early7'lt stages of the oscilla'bor vni-b . fabrication etching is used to reveal
the presence of •t'uinrahg" in slabs bars or rough-cut blanks. In. 'the final s'fcages
of fabrication etc'hing is employed to remove disoriented surface quartz and other
debris, "bo stabilise -bhe surfaces, to ininiinize ageing and -bo adjust the blanlc to
the.. desired frequency.
^r this method the frequency of most'crys'bals can be increased quite
easily and id.th far less work thah by grinding •them down, and it does not appeay
to affec-fc •bho as-fcivity of -fche crystal, A convenien-b way to prepare the solu.'bio?!
is •bo use a plastic cap found-on many bottles e-fcc, I4uc -fcwo capsful of the
ararapniura 'bifluo ride-and. five of •ua'fcer, bu'b as t. he acid so forms'd. is one of the'.
strongest -fchcre is, and \d. ll sven affec-t glass, it must be mixed in a. con-fcainer.
of p]Lai3'bic*1 This con'fcainor may be cemented to a .plas'bic saucer or similax* to
lessen therisk of lcno.cld. ng it over. S-bir -bhe mixture I'ri.th a plastic, rod until •
all the ammonium bifluoride oryst. als are dissolved. Glean the crystal wLth
car^sontetrachloride before commencing the e-fcching, The method used by VK7KA ip
to make-a little "bucket11 from a. plasti.c -fchimblo -with holes drilled in it- and a,
handle made of the plas'bic coveiing from a length of hook up id. re. The crys'bal
is placed in this bucket which is then suspended in the solution. To remove, for
a fEoquency check i-b is a simple matter -bo lif-b the bucke-b out of the solution,"
take the ciystal out •('n. t'h'a pair of 'bireezers and dry -wi-bh a tissue. Just dab. it>
dzy, do no-fc nib i-b i&'fch •the tissue as •this •will sometimes lower the crystal-a
few'cycles, bu-t i-fc does no-fc remain low.
The rate of erosion varies wi.th differen-fc ciystals and wi.ll decrease as,
the surface becomes smoo-fcher, so it is a case of tr^ each ons and find ou-b* Th®
ini-fcial ra"te would probably no-fc exceed 10 to 20 kc/s per hour, W^en a large
incriease in frequency is necessary it could be left -to soak overnight. The
crygtal•should be removed at intervals and -bhe frequency checked in a suitable
osc4.11ator)i but "bake particular care when negring the desired frequency.
ECTBE№ CARE SHOULD HI; TMM IN HAMDLING THIS VEBZ DANGEROUS SOLUTION,
AMD Vmm NO CIRCm'-ISTANGES SHOULD IT BE ALLOVJED TO COME IN CONTACT WITH THE SKIN.
If i-fc should VQQh it off inui-iediatGln.ri.-fch plenty of -water.. The\solution can be-
kept for future use, but rather -bhan have i-fc lying around the sha.ck and a potential
source of danger, discard it, ty pouring i-fc do-un . the drain, flushi.ng wi-fch plenty
of water. Wash ou-fc the container in running wa'ber, gnd nix a nei^r batch nesct time
you-wan-fc -bo use it. If you must keep i-fc, store ca'refully out of the •way, _
preferably close to -bh© floor so that if it should be spilled i-fc vion'-fc spill over
you,
Finally a hint -bo save you time when checking the frequency. Ifeke a
gadget j.ust big enough to -bske a FT243 holder out of a fairly s-fci-ff piece of
bras-s or aluminium (See Fig. ) Af'fcor reassembling -the holder, instead of was'fcing
time vL-bh the three sraall bolts that keep i-b -fcoge-fcher,. just slip it into this
gadget which will keep the whole 'lot in place. ; I'Jhen nearing -fche desirQd
frequency i'b would probably be -ui'sG _"fco do -bhe job properly and use the bolts,

Amrjoni-um bifluoride does not appear to be readily available from retail
 sources her®, •bu'fc-. if enough inembers are interestod we •will obtain some for ;
