Over the weekend of 28 and 29 November 1992 we celebrated the 350th anniversary of the exploration of Tasmania by Abel Tasman. As far as I know the only location they set foot on in Tasmania was in a small rocky bay now named Tasman Bay, located 3 kilometres south east of Marion Bay Narrows on Forestier Peninsula. Mike Hooper SK then VK7CCX with Brian Welch VK7BW as crew on his motor cruiser “Strange Alliance” and myself Mike Jenner VK7FB, at that time living permanently on my motorsailer “North Star” with Stu Braunholz VK7NXX as crew, sailed down to Tasman Bay, temporarily renaming our vessels the “Heemskirk” and the “Zeehan”, after Tasman’s ships. There is a cairn in the bay to commemorate Tasman’s landing. In this folder are extracts from my ship’s log of the event. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a record of the many contacts we made over the two day period. Likewise, I had video of the trip, but have not found that either.
